Introduction and Aims. Congenital absence of the vas deferens is an uncommon anomaly and this clinical condition is responsible for up to 1-2% of male infertility. METHODS: In 41 patients with bilateral vas deferens agenesis confirmed by surgical exploration between 1988 and 1997, renal and seminal vesicle anomalies were investigated by ultrasonography. The effect of an acute infection with Trypanosoma brucei on the reactivity of the rat vas deferens to noradrenaline, tyramine and field stimulation was studied. AIMS: It is well established that intracellular cAMP contributes to the relaxation of vas deferens smooth muscle. In many tissues, intracellular cAMP is actively transported to the extracellular space, where it exerts regulatory functions, via its metabolite adenosine. These actions take place through the cAMP conversion to adenosine by ectoenzymes, a process called "extracellular cAMP-adenosine pathway".
