Blood biomarkers for occupational hand-arm vibration exposure.

Hand-arm vibration is a common occupational exposure that causes neurological impairment, myalgia, and vibration-induced Raynaud's phenomena or vibration white fingers (VWF). The pathological mechanism is largely unknown, though several mechanisms have been proposed, involving both immunological vascular damage and defective neural responses. The aim of this study was to test whether the substances interleukin-33 (IL-33), macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC), interleukin-10 (IL-10), endothelin-1 (ET-1), C-C motif chemokine ligand 20 (CCL20), calcitonin, and thromboxane (TXA2) changed before and …

[Low magnitude whole-body vibration and postmenopausal osteoporosis].

Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a type of osteoporosis with high bone transformation rate, caused by a decrease of estrogen in the body, which is a systemic bone disease characterized by decreased bone mass and increased risk of fracture. In recent years, as a kind of non-pharmacologic treatment of osteoporosis, defined by whole-body vibration less than 1 g ( g = 9.81 m/s 2), low magnitude whole-body vibration is widely concerned, mainly because of its small side effects, simple operation and relative safety. Studies have shown that low magnitude whole-body vibration can improve bone strength, …

Whole Body Vibration Methods with Survivors of Polio.

The purpose of the original study was to examine the use of whole body vibration (WBV) on polio survivors with and without post-polio syndrome as a form of weight bearing exercise. The goal of this article is to highlight the strengths, limitations, and applications of the method used. Fifteen participants completed two intervention blocks with a wash-out period in between the blocks. Each block consisted of twice a week (four weeks) WBV interventions, progressing from 10 to 20 min per session. Low intensity (peak to peak displacement 4.53 mm, frequency 24 Hz, g force 2.21) and higher intensit…

Force illusions and drifts observed during muscle vibration.

We explored predictions of a scheme that views position and force perception as a result of measuring proprioceptive signals within a reference frame set by ongoing efferent process. In particular, this hypothesis predicts force illusions caused by muscle vibration and mediated via changes in both afferent and efferent components of kinesthesia. Healthy subjects performed accurate steady force production tasks by pressing with the four fingers of one hand (the task hand) on individual force sensors with and without visual feedback. At various times during the trials, subjects matched the perce…

Vibration acceleration promotes bone formation in rodent models.

All living tissues and cells on Earth are subject to gravitational acceleration, but no reports have verified whether acceleration mode influences bone formation and healing. Therefore, this study was to compare the effects of two acceleration modes, vibration and constant (centrifugal) accelerations, on bone formation and healing in the trunk using BMP 2-induced ectopic bone formation (EBF) mouse model and a rib fracture healing (RFH) rat model. Additionally, we tried to verify the difference in mechanism of effect on bone formation by accelerations between these two models. Three groups (low…

Vibration therapy for Parkinson's disease: Charcot's studies revisited.

The 19th century neurologist, J-M Charcot, used a vibration chair for treating Parkinson's disease (PD). He documented improvement, but few subsequent studies examined vibration treatment. Using a specialized lounge chair, we conducted a rater blinded, randomized trial of body vibration vs. no vibration in 23 PD patients. The primary outcome measure was change from baseline in the motor section of the MDS-UPDRS. Both vibration and no vibration groups significantly improved after one month of daily treatments. However, there was no significant difference between the two treatment groups, sugges…

Occupational exposure to whole body vibration-train drivers.

Whole body vibration exposure of the train drivers working for State Railway Lines is assessed by referring to ISO standard 2631 -1 and EU directive 2002/44/EC. The vibration measurements were done in the cabins of suburban and intercity train drivers. Suburban train driver performs his job usually in standing posture. Whereas intercity train driver works generally in seated (bending forward) posture and exposed to longer periods of continuous vibration, compared to suburban train drivers. The mean accelerations, a, along lateral, y, and vertical, z, directions measured on the driver seat (on …

Vibration-induced hearing loss: mechanical and physiological aspects.

HYPOTHESIS: The sensorineural hearing loss (HL) after middle ear surgery has been explained by the noise generated by drilling, without considering the vibration generated by the burr. BACKGROUND: The role of temporal bone vibration in the etiology of the HL was evaluated. METHODS: An electromagnetic shaker was used to vibrate the bony external ear canal of guinea pigs at different frequencies ranging from 32 to 1,000 Hz and at intensities ranging from 4.2 to 18.8 m/s for 15 minutes. The hearing threshold was measured with auditory evoked responses. A total of 30 animals were tested. RESULT…

Flexibility enhancement with vibration: Acute and long-term.

INTRODUCTION: The most popular method of stretching is static stretching. Vibration may provide a means of enhancing range of motion beyond that of static stretching alone. PURPOSE: This study sought to observe the effects of vibration on static stretching to determine whether vibration-aided static stretching could enhance range of motion acquisition more than static stretching alone in the forward split position. METHODS: Ten highly trained male volunteer gymnasts were randomly assigned to experimental (N = 5) and control (N = 5) groups. The test was a forward split with the rear knee flex…

Effectiveness of muscle vibration in modulating corticospinal excitability.

This study explored the effect of vibration of the forearm extensors on motor cortical excitability and the influence of stimulus duration. Sixteen healthy volunteers between 23 and 42 years old participated in one or two studies. We applied 15 or 30 min of 100 Hz, 0.5 mm-amplitude vibration to the extensor carpi radialis longus (ECRL) muscle. Cortical excitability was measured as the magnitude of the motor-evoked potentials (MEPs), and the size of the representation area associated with ECRL and flexor carpi ulnaris muscles was determined with the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation. A 3…

Vibration-induced changes in EMG during human locomotion.

The present study was set up to examine the contribution of Ia afferent input in the generation of electromyographic (EMG) activity. Subjects walked blindfolded along a walkway while tendon vibration was applied continuously to a leg muscle. The effects of vibration were measured on mean EMG activity in stance and swing phase. The results show that vibration of the quadriceps femoris (Q) at the knee and of biceps femoris (BF) at the knee enhanced the EMG activity of these muscles and this occurred mainly in the stance phase of walking. These results suggest involvement of Ia afferent input of …

Vibratory antinociception: effects of vibration amplitude and frequency.

The ability of cutaneous vibration to compromise detection of a nociceptive stimulus was examined in 2 sets of psychophysical experiments. The noxious stimulus was a 10-millisecond burst of radiant heat from a CO(2) laser; at the near-threshold levels used it generally yielded a mild pricking sensation. In both experiments, the detectability (d(e)') of the laser was measured in the presence of different vibratory stimuli and in the absence of vibration. Periods of vibration lasted 10 seconds, bracketing the time of occurrence of the laser. Vibratory and laser stimuli were presented 2.3 cm apar…

Clinical versus quantitative vibration assessment: improving clinical performance.

In 3 large cohorts (total of 787 patients), clinical vibration impairment (CVI) of the great toe using a tuning fork was compared with quantitative vibration threshold (QVT). Using a stepwise multivariate analysis, we assessed demographic and anthropomorphic patient characteristics associated with the difference between CVI and QVT for the various cohorts and the chosen QVT ranges of percentile abnormality. We also compared CVI or QVT abnormality with a composite score of nerve conduction abnormality to confirm that QVT is a valid measure of severity of neuropathy. Highly significant associati…

Hand muscle weakness in long-term vibration exposure.

Hand muscle strength was compared between workers regularly exposed to hand-held vibrating tools (n=81) and a non-exposed control group (n=45). Maximal voluntary strengths of hand grip, thumb pinch, thumb palmar abduction and index and little finger abduction were measured. The exposed workers had significantly weaker extrinsic (7%, P<0.01) and intrinsic (19%, P<0.0001) muscles than the controls. Reduced vibration perception was noted in nine vibration-exposed workers who presented with symptoms of hand muscle weakness (P<0.01). Cold intolerance following vibration exposure was found to preced…
