The influence of unilateral uncorrected astigmatism on binocular vision and fixation disparity.

PURPOSE: It is accepted practice to use a spherical equivalent power as an alternative contact lens correction for those patients with lower amounts of astigmatism, allowing for an easier fit, but the blur caused by one diopter of uncorrected astigmatism can reduce acuity of 6/6 to that of about 6/8. This is usually deemed acceptable monocularly, often retaining a good binocular acuity. The purpose of this study is to explore how monocular astigmatic blur may also affect the patient's binocular vision function. METHODS: A trial frame was outfitted with full correction for 20 healthy subjects

HIV/AIDS and blindness.

Nearly 34 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS: ocular complications are common, affecting 50% to 75% of all such patients at some point during the course of their illness. Cytomegalovirus retinitis is by far the most frequent cause of vision loss in patients with AIDS. Although the prevalence of cytomegalovirus retinitis is decreasing in industrialized countries because of the widespread availability of highly active antiretroviral therapy, between 10% and 20% of HIV-infected patients worldwide can be expected to lose vision in one or both eyes as a result of ocular cytomegalovir

The Value of VR-PVEP in Objective Evaluation of Monocular Refractive Visual Impairment.

OBJECTIVES: To study the virtual reality-pattern visual evoked potential (VR-PVEP) P100 waveform characteristics of monocular visual impairment with different impaired degrees under simultaneous binocular perception and monocular stimulations. METHODS: A total of 55 young volunteers with normal vision (using decimal recording method, far vision ≥0.8 and near vision ≥0.5) were selected to simulate three groups of monocular refractive visual impairment by interpolation method. The sum of near and far vision ≤0.2 was Group A, the severe visual impairment group; the sum of near and far vision <0.

Visual Neuroprosthesis - Stimulation of Visual Cortical Centers in The Brain. Design of Non-Invasive Transcranial Stimulation of Functional Neurons.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the article is to present the history and current status of visual cortical neuroprostheses, and to present a new method of stimulating intact visual cortex cells. METHODS: This paper contains an overview of the history and current status of visual cortex stimulation in severe visual impairment, but also highlights its shortcomings. These include mainly the stimulation of currently damaged cortical cells over a small area and, from a morphological point of view, possible damage to the stimulated neurons by the electrodes and their encapsulation by gliotic tissue. Incidence of ocular and systemic diseases affecting visual function among state bus drivers.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the incidence of ocular and systemic disease affecting visual function among state transport corporation bus drivers in a south Indian district. METHODS: This retrospective study analysed the records of all the drivers who presented to a south Indian tertiary-care eye hospital in 2019 for their mandatory annual ocular check-up. Details reviewed included demographic details; refraction; presence of systemic and ocular diseases with vision-threatening potential; presence of ocular conditions responsible for visual loss and the treatment administered. RESULTS: 3042 drivers

Harmonization of Outcomes and Vision Endpoints in Vision Restoration Trials: Recommendations from the International HOVER Taskforce.

Translational research in vision prosthetics, gene therapy, optogenetics, stem cell and other forms of transplantation, and sensory substitution is creating new therapeutic options for patients with neural forms of blindness. The technical challenges faced by each of these disciplines differ considerably, but they all face the same challenge of how to assess vision in patients with ultra-low vision (ULV), who will be the earliest subjects to receive new therapies. Historically, there were few tests to assess vision in ULV patients. In the 1990s, the field of visual prosthetics expanded rapidly

Prism adaptation without binocular vision.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

The assumption that vergence adaptation to a prism could only take place during single binocular vision was investigated by having subjects wear a prism while fusion was dissociated. Adaptation was evaluated by its effect on lateral heterophoria. Dissociation and measurement of heterophoria were by means of an automated version of Duane's screen and parallax test. A preliminary investigation with 37 subjects fixating at 6 m while wearing 4 delta base-out and with 33 other subjects fixating at 50 cm while wearing 3 delta base-in showed that at least 25% adapted to the prism. Results of an inves

A review of ocular malingering and hysteria for the flight surgeon.

Malingering is the conscious creation of a functional defect or denial of a true defect. Positive malingering is the former, and negative malingering is the latter. Hysteria is similar to malingering except that it is unconscious. Ocular malingering is common among draft evaders. The flight surgeon or military ophthalmologist will more commonly see the negative malingerer in peacetime because of the high physical standards for flying. Wartime creates a sudden shift towards positive malingering, however, for obvious reasons. This paper carefully defines the distinctions between malingering, hys

Relationship between fixation disparity curves and symptoms in monofixators.

Patients with small angle strabismus usually are asymptomatic. Occasionally, however, binocular asthenopic symptoms are reported. Two monofixators, one symptomatic and the other asymptomatic, with similar profiles on strabismic evaluation had forced vergence Fixation Disparity Curves (FDC) measured. Slope of the FDC may help to discriminate between the symptomatic and asymptomatic patient.

Association between preoperative inferior rectus muscle swelling and outcomes in orbital blowout fracture.

PURPOSE: In 18 patients with orbital blowout fracture who underwent reconstruction using a bone autograft, the association between preoperative inferior rectus muscle swelling and the outcome 1 year after the operation was evaluated. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The patients were classified according to outcomes into four groups: Group A without double vision showing normal ocular movements, Group B with double vision showing normal ocular movements, Group C with double vision showing improvement in ocular movements, and Group D with double vision showing no improvement in ocular movements. [Electronic eikonometer: Measurement tests displayed on stereoscopic screen].

We propose the presentation on a stereoscopic screen of the electronic eikonometer tests intended for analysis and measurement of perceptual effects of binocular disparity. These tests, so-called "built-in magnification tests" are constructed according to the same principle as those of preceding eikonometers (disparity variation parameters being included in each test presentation, which allows, for test observation and measurements during the examination, the removing of any intermediate optical system). The images of these tests are presented separately to each eye, according to active or pas

Reading difficulty after stroke: ocular and non ocular causes.

BACKGROUND: Ocular causes of reading impairment following stroke include visual field loss, eye movement impairment and poor central vision. Non ocular causes may include cognitive errors or language impairment. AIM: The purpose of this study was to identify all patients referred with suspected visual impairment who had reported reading difficulty to establish the prevalence of ocular and non ocular causes. METHODS: Prospective, multicentre, observation study with standardised referral and assessment forms across 21 sites. Visual assessment included visual acuity measurement, visual field as
