Motorist vision policy.

BACKGROUND: The primary purpose of public policy requiring vision testing for driver license renewal is to identify individuals with functional vision impairments and, when necessary, to restrict their driving. This is based on the presumption that poor vision is causally related to poor driving and traffic crashes. METHODS: The AOA Environmental and Occupational Vision Committee performed a synthesis of relevant empirical literature on policy-based research and developed potential options for enhancing traffic safety. RESULTS: Presently, some states require vision testing for driver's licen

Functional ability profiles for driver licensing. Exemplification by visual profile.

The impaired driver is evaluated for driver licensing according to a functional ability profile. This test correlates, in increments, the physical or medical ability of the driver with the risk categories and the vehicles the driver is permitted to operate. The person is responsible for his fitness to drive. The physician may help in patient evaluation by participation in a medical advisory board or in public education. Guidelines for 11 areas of potential driving impairments were developed in the state of Utah. These principles are illustrated with visual standards.

Fixation disparity and near visual acuity.

Twenty patients having associated heterophoria values of 2 delta and greater, as recorded with a Mallett unit, had their near monocular and binocular visual acuities measured. In the latter case, measurements were taken both with the associated heterophoria corrected by prisms and without prism correction. Bradford Near Vision charts, specially designed to measure visual acuity at near in seconds of arc, were used in the acuity measurement. The improvement of binocular acuity compared with monocular acuity was less than would occur in normal subjects without associated heterophorias. When the

Colour vision defects in asymptomatic carriers of the Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) mtDNA 11778 mutation from a large Brazilian LHON pedigree: a case-control study.

AIMS: To determine if asymptomatic carriers from a previously identified large pedigree of the Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) 11778 mtDNA mutation have colour vision deficits. METHODS: As part of a comprehensive analysis of over 200 members of a large Brazilian LHON pedigree spanning seven generations, colour vision tests were obtained from 91 members. Colour vision was tested one eye at a time using the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 (FM-100) hue colour vision test. The test was administered under uniform conditions, taking into account: ambient light levels, daylight colour temperature …

Rapid measurement and machine learning classification of colour vision deficiency.

Colour vision deficiencies (CVDs) indicate potential genetic variations and can be important biomarkers of acquired impairment in many neuro-ophthalmic diseases. However, CVDs are typically measured with tests which possess high sensitivity for detecting the presence of a CVD but do not quantify its type or severity. In this study, we introduce Foraging Interactive D-prime (FInD), a novel computer-based, generalisable, rapid, self-administered vision assessment tool and apply it to colour vision testing. This signal detection theory-based adaptive paradigm computed test stimulus intensity from

Profile of peripheral visual anomalies in the disabled reader.

A vision screening was performed on 80 disabled readers. The purpose of this screening was to examine the incidence of specific peripheral visual anomalies so as to isolate those visual anomalies most commonly found in this population, thus forming a visual profile of the disabled reader. The results of this vision screening indicate the same basic visual profile found by numerous other investigators; i.e., a significantly higher percentage of failures in tests of accommodation, fusion, and oculomotor skills relative to visual acuity, refractive error and ocular pathology, as well as the need

Clear and Single Binocular Vision in Near 3D Displays.

SIGNIFICANCE: Accommodation/convergence mismatch induced by 3D displays can cause discomfort symptoms such as those induced by accommodation/convergence mismatch in clinical vergence testing. We found that the limits of clear and single vision during vergence tests are very different between 3D and clinical tests. Clinical vergences should not be used as substitutes for measures of vergences in 3D displays. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to determine whether the limits of clear and single binocular vision derived from phoropter prism vergence tests match the limits measured in a 3D

Accuracy and intrasession variability of noncycloplegic autorefraction of school-aged children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: This review addresses the intricate spectrum of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a condition affecting 10-30% of the Western population. GERD is characterized by the backflow of gastric contents into the esophagus, causing typical and atypical symptoms. Its pathophysiology involves various factors such as hiatal hernia, esophageal motor disorders, and dietary triggers. The review explores the complexities of GERD spectrum, including nonerosive reflux disease (NERD), reflux hypersensitivity (RH), and functional heartburn (FH). SUMMARY: The diagnostic process for GERD, based

Management of diplopia.

Diplopia (seeing double) is an ophthalmologic complaint found mainly in elder patients. It can have both ocular and neurological causes. A careful history and clinical examination must detail the type of diplopia (monocular/ binocular), onset, and progression, associated and relieving factors. In case of monocular diplopia, refraction and biomicroscopic examination of the ocular media are mandatory. The cause of ocular misalignment for binocular diplopia must be determined and life-threatening conditions (such as posterior communicating artery aneurysm) must imply an immediate treatment. Manag

[Comparison of five methods for subjective assessment of ocular cyclodeviation].

1. simple Maddox rod (Franceschetti) 2. set of scaled large diameter Maddox rods 3. synoptophore 4. synoptometer (Cüppers) 5. dark red glass in front of the Harms tangent scale (Kolling). Whereas the first two methods allow to measure in primary position only, the other three also permit secondary and tertiary position measurements. Thirty normal subjects underwent comparative measurements by means of the above techniques in monocular and binocular condition. The median values indicate that all these methods are reliable but that certain specific differences influence the results. For this rea
