Holotranscobalamin, a marker of vitamin B-12 status: analytical aspects and clinical utility.

Approximately one-quarter of circulating cobalamin (vitamin B-12) binds to transcobalamin (holoTC) and is thereby available for the cells of the body. For this reason, holoTC is also referred to as active vitamin B-12. HoloTC was suggested as an optimal marker of early vitamin B-12 deficiency >20 y ago. This suggestion led to the development of suitable assays for measurement of the compound and clinical studies that aimed to show the benefit of measurement of holoTC rather than of vitamin B-12. Today holoTC can be analyzed by 3 methods: direct measurement of the complex between transcobalamin

Effect of vitamins on Trichinella pseudospiralis Garkavi, 1972 infection in mice.

The effects of vitamins A, B complex, E, and ADE on the eosinophilia, body weight, number of obtained larvae and distribution of larvae of Trichinella pseudospiralis were examined in mice. The increased eosinophilia started to appear in the majority of infected mice from day 7 p.i., the maximum being around day 21 p.i. The highest values of eosinophilia were observed in the mice after application of vitamin B complex. In spite of considerable individual differences, the greatest decrease in body weight occurred in mice receiving vitamins E and B complex. The greatest numbers of larvae were obt…

B Vitamins, Glucoronolactone and the Immune System: Bioavailability, Doses and Efficiency.

The present review deals with two main ingredients of energy/power drinks: B vitamins and glucuronolactone and their possible effect on the immune system. There is a strong relationship between the recommended daily dose of selected B vitamins and a functional immune system. Regarding specific B vitamins: (1) Riboflavin is necessary for the optimization of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the fight against bacterial infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus and Listeria monocytogenes. (2) Niacin administered within normal doses to obese rats can change the phenotype of skeletal fibers, and th

[Effect of some vitamins on activity of immunocompetent cells].

The content of vitamins A, E, B1, B2, B6 in lymphocytes and serum of blood was studied with simultaneous determination of CD3+, CD5+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+, CD25+, CD71+, CD95+, and HLADR+ populations. According to cellular immunity response, patients were divided into two groups--with physiological norm and deficiency. It was established that, irrespective of the group, the content of vitamins A, E, B6 in blood serum does not change, while the concentration of B1 and B2 in the group with physiological norm is greater than that in the group with deficiency. In the group with deficiency of cellular

Micronutrients in chronic heart failure.

Heart failure (HF)-associated mortality remains high, despite guideline-recommended medical therapies. Poor nutritional status and unintentional cachexia have been shown to have a strong association with worse survival in HF patients. Importantly, micronutrient deficiencies are potential contributing factors to the progression of HF. This review aims to summarize contemporary evidence on the role of micronutrients in the pathophysiology and outcome of HF patients. Emphasis will be given to the most well-studied micronutrients, specifically, vitamin D, vitamin B complex, coenzyme Q10 and L-carn…

[Hyperhomocysteinemia and B-vitamin deficiency. Current clinical aspects].

Mild to moderate hyperhomocysteinemia has been recognized as an independent risk factor for coronary heart diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, osteoporosis, and pregnancy complications. Low intakes and decreased absorption of the B-vitamins are the most common causes of hyperhomocysteinemia, which is very prevalent in elderly people. The current review summarizes results from epidemiological studies and presents possible pathological mechanisms of hyperhomocysteinemia. In addition, the current study is a critical evaluation of results from several intervention studies that have been initiate

Effects of B Vitamins on Homocysteine Lowering and Thrombotic Risk Reduction-A Review of Randomized Controlled Trials Published Since January 1996.

Homocysteine is an amino acid derived from methionine which is metabolized via vitamin B6 (pyridoxine)- and vitamin B12 (cobalamin)-dependent pathways. Supplementation of B vitamins has been shown to effectively reduce plasma homocysteine levels. Previous research has also demonstrated an association between lower plasma homocysteine levels and decreased risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and venous thromboembolism. However, whether supplementation of B vitamins is associated with risk reduction in thromboembolic events and confers clinical benefits remains inconclusive. This review examin

Subacute onset leukodystrophy and visual-spatial disorders revealing phenylketonuria combined with homocysteinmia in adulthood: A case report.

RATIONALE: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is a metabolic disorder, which manifests a progressive irreversible neurological impairment during infancy and childhood. Hyperhomocysteinemia also showed that it might be involved in pathophysiology of many neuropsychiatric disorders. The late-onset clinical manifestations of these 2 diseases have not been reported elsewhere. We speculated that the late-onset PKU is caused by 2 kinds of metabolic dysfunction synergistically, especially a short period of irregular diet directly caused clinical symptoms. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 21-year old Asian male patient demons

Hyperhomocysteinemia and cardiovascular risk: effect of vitamin supplementation in risk reduction.

Homocysteine is a sulfur-containing aminoacid produced during metabolism of methionine. Since 1969 the relationship between altered homocysteine metabolism and both coronary and peripheral atherotrombosis has been known; in recent years experimental evidences have shown that elevated plasma levels of homocysteine are associated with an increased risk of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular ischemic events. Several mechanisms by which elevated homocysteine impairs vascular function have been proposed, including impairment of endothelial function, production of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and co

The potential hazards of high doses of vitamin B6 in treating nausea and vomiting in pregnancy: A systematic review.

Vitamin B6 is frequently utilized as a therapeutic agent for nausea and vomiting of pregnancy (NVP). Research indicates that excessive intake of vitamin B6 can have implications on neurological function, underscoring the importance of cautious consideration when administering vitamin B6 treatment during early pregnancy. This systematic review investigates the effects of high doses of vitamin B6 on pregnant women experiencing NVP. We searched the PubMed® MEDLINE® database for articles using the following terms: "pregnancy" or "nausea and vomiting during pregnancy" and "vitamin B6." Women with n
