Decoding and vocabulary improvements mediate sustained gains in reading comprehension: Evidence from a randomised controlled trial of a multicomponent reading intervention.

BACKGROUND: Reading comprehension is critical for academic success, yet many children with persistent decoding difficulties struggle to achieve it. This study examined whether a multicomponent literacy intervention is effective in improving reading comprehension and whether any gains in comprehension are mediated by improvements in word reading and vocabulary knowledge. METHODS: In a randomised controlled trial (RCT), 285 English-speaking children aged 7-9 years with reading difficulties were assigned to a waitlist control group or the Research Informed Literacy with Language (RILL) intervent…

Exploring the relationships among language input-output, vocabulary knowledge, and English Reading development of emergent bilinguals in dual language immersion programs.

Learning to read in a second language (L2) poses unique challenges for emergent bilingual (EB) children. This study examines whether Spanish-English EB children's vocabulary skills in Spanish and English mediate the relationship between their language input-output and English (L2) reading skills. The sample included 338 Latina/o EB children in first and third grades enrolled in dual-language immersion (DLI) programs in the United States. Results from the multivariate regression model revealed differences in language input-output at home, with third graders reported using more English than firs…

Nondestructive, epi-illumination surface microscopic characterization of surface discontinuity in bone: a new approach offers a descriptive vocabulary and new insights.

Perspectives are in the eye of the beholder and are expanded with increased scrutiny (e.g., magnification). The term "porosity' for macroscopically or radiologically identifiable discontinuity in bone is so variably applied as to be incomprehensible in its meanings. A closer examination of surface discontinuity seems appropriate. Histological and atomic level analysis of bone alterations misses the forest for the trees and the former destroys the very subject it attempts to characterize. Surface discontinuity was therefore evaluated at the three-dimensional submacroscopic level. An epifluoresc

Investigating the Effects of Adding Explicit Teaching and/or Signing to Story-Based Vocabulary Intervention for School-Aged Children With (Developmental) Language Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Children with language disorders, including developmental language disorder (DLD), experience challenges with word learning. Common components of vocabulary interventions include presenting target words in a story, providing explicit teaching and using sign/gesture alongside speech. However, previous studies have not investigated the relative contribution of these components, in isolation or combination. AIM: To measure the effects of adding explicit teaching and/or augmentative signing to a story-based vocabulary intervention. METHODS: Eighteen participants, aged 7;09-15;02 year…

Small-for-Gestational-Age and Vocabulary and Achievement Test Scores at Age 9 Among Children Born at Term in a Contemporary U.S. Sample.

INTRODUCTION: Children that are small-for-gestational-age (SGA) at birth are at an increased risk for cognitive impairment, even if born at term (37-41 weeks). This study examined associations between sex-specific SGA and vocabulary and achievement tests in 9 year old children born at term using a contemporary population-based US sample. METHODS: A secondary data analysis was conducted on a sample of 2144 children born at term in 1998-2000 who participated in a US birth cohort study that oversampled non-marital births, which in the U.S. are associated with socioeconomic disadvantage and racia…

The effectiveness of a multisensory traditional storytelling programme on target vocabulary development in children with disabilities accessing English as a second language: A preliminary study.

The current deliberations on increasing access to English and the democratization of English in post-war Sri Lanka must extend to students with disabilities. Research evidence from speech and language therapy promotes the use of multi-sensory stimuli to advance the development of communication and language skills in children with intellectual disabilities. In this preliminary study, 3 local children's stories, together with relevant story-making activities, were offered to 7 children with intellectual disabilities in one special school across 12 lessons. Vocabulary measures of word naming of t…

From early communication to bimodal vocabulary acquisition: A longitudinal study of hearing children with deaf mothers from infancy to school-age years.

Early language development has rarely been studied in hearing children with deaf parents who are exposed to both a spoken and a signed language (bimodal bilinguals). This study presents longitudinal data of early communication and vocabulary development in a group of 31 hearing infants exposed to British Sign Language (BSL) and spoken English, at 6 months, 15 months, 24 months and 7 years, in comparison with monolinguals (exposed to English) and unimodal bilinguals (exposed to two spoken languages). No differences were observed in early communication or vocabulary development between bimodal b…

Systematic Physical Assistance During Intervention for People Who Use High-Tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems: The Importance of Using a Common Vocabulary.

PURPOSE: Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) use prompting hierarchies to facilitate learning and monitor treatment progress. When working with people who use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), SLPs typically use physical assistance to prompt motor learning. However, there is currently no standardization regarding the number of physical prompting levels or an operational definition for each prompting level. Clinicians and researchers may be working from different definitions; making treatment progress monitoring and intervention effectiveness comparisons across research studies

Not All Planes Have Propellers: Using Context Variability to Treat Word Learning in Late Talkers With the Vocabulary Acquisition and Usage for Late Talkers Protocol.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine if the Vocabulary Acquisition and Usage for Late Talkers (VAULT) intervention could be efficaciously applied to a new treatment target: words a child neither understood nor said. We also assessed whether the type of context variability used to encourage semantic learning (i.e., action or object) would affect learning outcomes. METHOD: Nineteen primarily English-speaking late-talking toddlers received 8 weeks of VAULT intervention. They were quasirandomly assigned to a condition that highlighted either object or action variability. Individual…

The development of a core key word signing vocabulary (Lámh) to facilitate communication with children with down syndrome in the first year of mainstream primary school in Ireland.

Key word signing, an unaided augmentative, and alternative communication (AAC) system is commonly used by children with Down syndrome who attend mainstream primary schools. To ensure the successful use of key word signing within a mainstream environment, a meaningful, contextually appropriate sign vocabulary must be available to all communication partners. The aim of this study was to develop a core school-based key word signing vocabulary to facilitate effective communication between children with Down syndrome and their communication partners in the first year of mainstream primary school. F…

"Are More Cues Always Better?" Effects of Cue-Based Instructional Support on Chinese L2 Vocabulary Processing and Immediate Learning Outcomes: Eye-Tracking Evidence.

Grounded in the Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning and Cognitive Load Theory, this study examined how cue-based instructional support relates to L2 Chinese vocabulary processing and immediate learning outcomes. Forty intermediate-to-advanced learners studied 24 disyllabic pseudowords under four within-subject conditions: no cueing, verbal cueing (linguistic-semantic support via definitions and collocations), physical cueing (typographical enhancement via bolded targets and underlined contextual words), and full cueing. Eye movements, immediate post-tests, and questionnaires were analyzed.…
