Neurocutaneous Melanosis and Dandy-Walker Malformation in a Newborn: A Case Report.

Neurocutaneous melanosis (NCM) and Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) are both uncommon congenital condition, involving the central nervous system (CNS). Combined NCM with DWM have been reported in a few studies. Potential consequences, including hydrocephalus and CNS malignancies make these illnesses extremely challenging to diagnose and treat. Occurrences of NCM and DWM together, can result in progressive neurological consequences and patients with this condition seems to have really poor prognosis. This case report describes a 5-day-old girl who was born with several large pigmented cutaneous

Real Steps or Not: Auto-Walker Detection in Move-to-Earn Applications.

In recent times, the emergence of Move-to-Earn (M2E) applications has revolutionized the intersection of digital innovation and physical wellness. Unlike their predecessors in the Play-to-Earn (P2E) domain, M2E apps incentivize physical activity, offering rewards for real-world movement such as walking or running. This shift aligns with a growing global focus on health consciousness that is propelled by the widespread adoption of smartphones and an increased awareness of the benefits of maintaining an active lifestyle. However, the rising popularity of these platforms has also brought about ne

Dandy-Walker Malformation in a Girl with DDX3X-Related Intellectual Disability.

INTRODUCTION: We report on a 4-year-old female patient who presented with severe intellectual disability, autistic features, hyperlaxity of joints, and progressive scoliosis. Whole-exome sequencing identified a de novo missense variant (c.976C>T; p.Arg326Cys) in DDX3X. CASE PRESENTATION: The girl was born with congenital diaphragmatic hernia a finding which had not previously been associated with variants in DDX3X. Her brain MRI showed hypogenesis of corpus callosum, ventriculomegaly, frontal and perisylvian polymicrogyria, and hypoplastic pons in addition to Dandy-Walker malformation. CONCL

Predicting outcomes in Dandy-Walker malformation: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is a disorder that most neurologists and neurosurgeons will manage at some point during their careers. It is characterized by partial or complete dysgenesis of the cerebellar vermis. Outcomes are highly variable and range from functionally normal to severely disabled. Predicting these outcomes has classically been focused on the radiological findings that constitute DWM. Other anomalies that can be commonly found in these patients are potentially more indicative of outcome than the tenet markers of DWM. Furthermore, hydrocephalus is an ever-present da

Psychosis and Dandy-Walker syndrome: a case report and review of the literature.

Dandy-Walker syndrome (DWS) is a group of brain malformations which sometimes present with psychotic symptoms. We present the case of a patient diagnosed with Dandy-Walker variant who presented with schizophrenia-like psychosis. A man in his 30s was admitted to an acute psychiatric unit presenting with persecutory delusions, auditory hallucinations and violent behaviour. The MRI performed showed the typical alterations of Dandy-Walker variant: vermian hypoplasia and cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle. He also suffered from mild intellectual disability. After being treated with olanzapin

Dandy-Walker syndrome with bilateral choanal atresia: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Dandy-Walker syndrome is a rare congenital brain malformation characterized by cerebellar vermis agenesis or hypoplasia, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle and a large posterior fossa causing upward displacement of tentorium and torcula. In this paper, we present a case of bilateral choanal atresia with Dandy-Walker Syndrome in a female newborn. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a female patient who was born at 38th weeks of gestation via emergency cesarean section due to non-reassuring cardiotocography and abnormal antenatal ultrasounds findings. The imaging reveal

Ligneous conjunctivitis in a Dandy-Walker syndrome: A rare case report.

Ligneous conjunctivitis (LC) is a rare form of pseudomembranous conjunctivitis seen in children, perhaps due to plasminogen deficiency, which manifest as a chronic refractory pseudomembranous conjunctivitis. LC cases are incapable in maintaining their fibrinolytic activity due to plasminogen deficiency; consequently, transudates of plasma assume as a thick, gelatinous, woody membranes over the mucosal surfaces. This is a short case report on a child with a LC, who presented with recurrent pseudomembranous conjunctivitis in conjunction with progressive congenital hydrocephalus due to aqueductal

Long Survival of a Patient with Trisomy 18 and Dandy-Walker Syndrome.

Trisomy 18 is a genetic disease resulting from an extra chromosome 18, characterized by a broad clinical spectrum, poor prognosis and low rates of survival. This is the case of a 12 year-old girl diagnosed with full trisomy 18, and multiple malformations, including Dandy-Walker Syndrome and congenital heart defects on long term survival. At nine months, a new echocardiogram showed a double outlet right ventricle, significant pulmonary stenosis, patent ductus arteriosus and ventricular septal defect. Cardiac surgery was performed at one year and seven months. Early surgical intervention and mul

Mary Broadfoot Walker: 83 years since a historical discovery.

Mary Broadfoot Walker was a Scottish physician who, in 1935, described in great detail the effect of an anticholinesterase drug (physostigmine) on the signs and symptoms of myasthenia gravis. An original five-minutes movie is available online and the skepticism of her contemporary British medical doctors is understandable when the drastic effect of the treatment is shown in this movie. What Mary Walker taught us, more than eight decades ago, about myasthenia gravis continues to be the basis of a pharmacological diagnostic test and treatment of this disease.

[Genetic analysis of two cases with Dandy-Walker deformed fetus].

OBJECTIVE: To explore the genetic etiology of two fetuses with Dandy-Walker malformation using single nucleotide polymorphism microarray (SNP-array). METHODS: The fetuses and their parents were subjected to G banding karyotype analysis. The fetuses were also subjected to SNP-array analysis. RESULTS: The parents of both fetuses showed a normal karyotype. One fetus has a 46,X,?i(X)(q10), while for another conventional cell culture has failed. SNP-array showed that one fetus carried a 6p25.3p25.2 microdeletion, and another carried a Xp22.33p22.2 deletion and a Yq11.221q11 duplication. The abnor

Risk factors for Dandy-Walker malformation: a population-based assessment.

Dandy-Walker malformation (DWM) is the most common congenital malformation of the cerebellum, but its causes are largely unknown. An increasing number of genes associated with congenital cerebellar malformations have been identified; however, few studies have examined the potential role of non-genetic, potentially modifiable risk factors. From the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, we examined maternal, paternal, and infant characteristics and maternal conditions and periconceptional exposures (from 1 month before to 3 months after conception) among infants with DWM (n = 160) and unaffec

An anxiety-induced bias in the perception of a bistable point-light walker.

Human sensitivity for social cues is exquisite, as illustrated by the ease with which simplified point-light movements invoke social and emotional responses. Compared to faces, these biological motion stimuli only recently started to be used to explore questions regarding social cognition and anxiety. We presented human point-light walkers that could be perceived as facing towards or facing away from the observer, and tested whether participants with high social anxiety would perceive these bistable stimuli differently, because this type of stimuli has particular relevance for them. The result…

Using walker during walking: a pilot study for health elder.

Walker operation completely relies on the walker handle, however most marketed walkers possess two horizontal handles. Several researchers have suggested that horizontal handles might lead to wrist injury. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to assess the relevant design aspects of walker for elderly people. 28 elders participated in this study; when the experiment was started, subject walked on the tile for 3 meter distance twice by using walker. Data for analysis were selected at the corresponding wrist deviation and vertical force. The results showed that during walker using, the mean w…

Coexistance of cerebral sinovenous thrombosis and Dandy Walker malformation in newborn.

Cerebral sinovenous thrombosis in neonatal period may cause neurological impairment, epilepsy, and lead to stroke. It is caused primarily by coagulopathy of numerous reasons, occasionally perinatal asphyxia, traumatic delivery and hyperhomocysteinemia. Dandy-Walker malformation is characterized by agenesis or hypoplasia of the cerebellar vermis, cystic dilatation of the fourth ventricle, and enlargement of the posterior fossa. Dandy-Walker malformation, variant, and mega cisterna magna represent a spectrum of developmental anomalies. Insults to developing cerebellar hemispheres and the fourth
