BACKGROUND: Israeli Jews of European origin have high incidence rates of all cancers, and many of them were exposed to severe famine and stress during World War II. We assessed cancer incidence in Israeli Jewish survivors of World War II.
METHODS: Cancer rates were compared in a cohort of 315 544 Israeli Jews who were born in Europe and immigrated to Israel before or during World War II (nonexposed group, n = 57 496) or after World War II and up to 1989 (the exposed group, ie, those potentially exposed to the Holocaust, n = 258 048). Because no individual data were available on actual Holocau

BACKGROUND: The number of cases of all types of dementia is increasing, and a significant increase in prevalence has been noted among veterans. Evidence of an association between dementia and exposure to chemicals such as Agent Orange from the Vietnam War is still limited, and there is a reported lack of awareness.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the risk of dementia among Vietnam War veterans in Korea.
DESIGN: This retrospective longitudinal study compared the incidence of dementia between Vietnam War veterans and the general population.
SETTING: This study used data from the na

This study examined independent contributions of rumination and experiential avoidance in predicting symptoms of psychological distress among female widowed survivors of war. A decade after the war in Kosovo, 100 widowed survivors of war completed measures of rumination, experiential avoidance, depression, posttraumatic stress, and prolonged grief. Results showed that both rumination and experiential avoidance significantly predicted the symptom severity of prolonged grief, depression, and posttraumatic stress. Furthermore, rumination accounted for additional variance above and beyond experien

BACKGROUND: Exposure to war is associated with considerable risks for long-term mental health problems (MHP) and poor functioning. Yet little is known about functioning and mental health service (MHS) use among former child soldiers (FCS). We assessed whether different categories of war experiences predict functioning and perceived need for, sources of and barriers to MHS among FCS.
METHODS: Data were drawn from an on-going War-affected Youths (WAYS) cohort study of FCS in Uganda. Participants completed questionnaires about war experiences, functioning and perceived need for, sources of and b

BACKGROUND: Sulfur mustard (SM), a chemical weapon used widely during World War I and against Iranians during the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, causes massive inflammatory tissue damage in the immediate post-exposure period, resulting in debilitating chronic disease in years to decades following contact with the agent. These syndromes most often are pathologies of the lungs, eyes, and skin, the primary target organs of SM. Typically, they are characterized by severe and increasingly painful inflammation, often accompanied by fibrosis and constriction of the anatomic channels needed for normal li

Since the end of the 1991 Gulf War, there have been reports of unexplained, multisymptom illnesses afflicting veterans who consistently report more symptoms than do nondeployed veterans. One of the many possible exposures suspected of causing chronic multisymptom illnesses Gulf War veterans is squalene, thought to be present in anthrax vaccine. We examined the relationship between squalene antibodies and chronic symptoms reported by Navy construction workers (Seabees), n=579. 30.2% were deployers, 7.4% were defined as ill, and 43.5% were positive for squalene antibodies. We found no associatio

Background: In June 2025, after nearly two years of fighting on Israel's northern and Gaza borders, direct conflict between Israel and Iran exposed the Israeli homefront to hundreds of rockets and drones targeting urban centres. Objective: This study was designed to assess the continuous traumatic stress response (CTSR) following a period of escalation and acute threat on the homefront and the relationship with unique war variables compared to recognized individual and social factors.Method: An online questionnaire was sent to a longitudinal sample of adults living on the homefront during the I

Traumatic stressors have always been a part of the human experience. What is now referred to as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) was first studied in the context of military trauma during the Civil War and World War I but most extensively in World War II. Much of what we know about the medical and psychological management of PTSD has its origins in military psychiatric approaches, and a review of these practices reveals important tenets that should be applied in current treatment for both military and nonmilitary PTSD. These practices include intervention as soon as possible after the trau

War as a collective trauma can severely harm the psychosocial well-being of individuals, disrupting their sense of safety, autonomy, and meaning of life. War also weakens individual and communal senses of safety and stability, erodes social cohesion, and forces large-scale displacement, as civilians seek security elsewhere. Research indicates that individuals with prior exposure to traumatic events may be more susceptible to experiencing distress when confronted by additional stressors, especially in times of continuous traumatic stress, such as war. This study examines the impact of the Octob

Because Vietnam veterans comprise the majority of all living veterans and most are now older adults, the urgency and potential value of studying the long-term health effects of service in the Vietnam War, including effects on mortality, is increasing. The present study is the first prospective mortality assessment of a representative sample of Vietnam veterans. We used one of the longest follow-up periods to date (spanning older adulthood) and conducted one of the most comprehensive assessments of potential risk factors. Vital status and cause of death were ascertained for the 1,632 veterans w

The trauma-writings of World War I nurses have been identified as an important and influential corpus of early 20th-century works. Not only did the rediscovery of these writings in the later 20th century serve to recognize the importance of women's writings as part of the historical record, and identify certain female writers as some of the most important thinkers of the modernist movement; they also demonstrated the importance of the nursing perspective as one element of wartime experience. This paper considers a number of influential works written by both nurses and members of the Voluntary

BACKGROUND: There are several million war-refugees worldwide, majority of whom stay in the recipient countries for years. However, little is known about their long-term mental health. This review aimed to assess prevalence of mental disorders and to identify their correlates among long-settled war-refugees.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of studies that assessed current prevalence and/or factors associated with depression and anxiety disorders in adult war-refugees 5 years or longer after displacement. We searched Medline, Embase, CINAHL, PsycINFO, and PILOTS from their inception t

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to identify long-term effects of diagnostic criteria on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-C) for a test group of Finnish evacuees from World War II and compare the outcome effect with a control group of children who lived in Finland during the war in 1939-1945.
METHODS: 152 participants were recruited by the local leader of the Finnish War Child Association in Sweden and Finland. The selected group answered questions on the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist (PCL-C) and the EMBU (Swedish acronym for "Own Memories of Parental Rearing"

Armed conflict imposes profound psychological stress and disrupts healthcare systems, placing pregnant women and newborns at particular risk. This review summarizes current evidence regarding the impact of war on maternal and neonatal outcomes, as well as healthcare utilization. Published national cohort studies demonstrate associations between war exposure and increased rates of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight, postpartum hemorrhage, and gestational diabetes. Patterns of healthcare utilization shift markedly during wartime, manifesting as redu…

BACKGROUND: Armed conflicts can deteriorate environmental conditions, including air quality, yet their short-term health implications remain underexplored. This study assessed the impact of the 2024 Beirut conflict on air pollution and associated respiratory and dermatological risks.
METHODS: Satellite-derived air pollution concentrations for Beirut's Southern Suburbs were compared between the pre-war period (Aug. 1-Sep. 22, 2024) and the war period (Sep. 23-Nov. 29, 2024), using Mann-Whitney U and independent t-tests. Ground-level PM2.5 was measured across 5 sites from October 25 to November

BACKGROUND: The number of females serving in the Gulf War has risen and continues to be a rapidly growing group. Females occupy a wide range of roles and face a myriad of challenges as they serve alongside their male counterparts in almost every role. Females are also facing redeployment, multiple deployments, and/or extended deployments. The stressors of war and deployments may be putting them at risk for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). If left untreated, PTSD can have devastating and debilitating consequences for veteran's functioning and relationships, their families, and society.

The authors present results of reconstructive surgical procedures in 127 non-war and 59 war vascular injures operated on in the last ten and 2 years, respectively. Non-war injures were dominated by blunt trauma, while fire arms and explosives caused most of war injuries. Two thirds of the patients were subjected to primary, and one third to secondary operations. As much as 85% of secondary operations were made in cases of war injuries. The most common reasons for inappropriate primary operations were: incomplete diagnostics, inappropriate surgical procedure and technical errors. About two thir

OBJECTIVES: Vietnamese American older adults have endured early life adversity and war-related trauma exposures, which are associated with worse aging outcomes. However, not all individuals experience poor outcomes, suggesting the possibility of protective factors. We examined associations between early life adversity, war-related exposures, and later life outcomes, and whether later life resilience moderated these associations.
DESIGN: This was a cross-sectional study.
SETTING: Enrollment occurred at two community-based sites in California.
PARTICIPANTS: Participants were from the Vietname
