Comparing neuropsychological functioning in Turkish patients with right and left temporal lobe epilepsy.

We compared neuropsychiatric evaluations in temporal lobe epilepsy according to the lateralized hemisphere. Forty-one (68.3%) left-sided temporal lobe epilepsy (LTLE) were compared to 19 right-sided temporal lobe epilepsy (RTLE) (31.7%) (p < 0.001). RTLE mean age was 37 (22-46) years, and LTLE mean age 38 was (30-42). RTLE disease duration was 10 (6-20) years, and LTLE was 22 (10-33) (p < 0.013). Gender (man/woman) for RTLE was 7/12, and for LTLE was 18/23. LTLE scored poorer on the Wechsler Memory Scale (WMS)-III's Mental Control Months-error, WMS-V's "Forward Number Range" and "Backward Numb…

A case of thrombosed giant aneurysm of the azygos anterior cerebral artery: clipping under monitoring of motor evoked potentials of the lower extremities.

Giant aneurysms of the distal anterior cerebral artery (ACA), especially the azygos ACA, are rare. We treated a patient with giant aneurysm … oints at 1 month after surgery. One year later, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Third Edition and Wechsler Memory Scale-Revised scores reached normal levels. Review of reported cases found this aneurysm tends to occur in males in their 50s to 70s presenting with mass sign. Decompression of the aneurysm in the frontal lobe and monitoring of L-MEPs during temporary occ …

Neurological sequelae of hospitalized Japanese encephalitis cases in Gansu province, China.

We conducted a follow-up survey for 55 Japanese encephalitis (JE) cases 1-2 years after hospital discharge in Gansu province, China. Community-, education-, and gender-matched healthy individuals without history of neurologic disease were selected as the comparison group. All subjects received neurological examination, intelligence quotient (IQ) measurement, adaptive behavior measurement, and Wechsler memory scale (WMS) assessment. We found 43.6% JE cases had at least one nervous system sequelae compared with 3.6% healthy individuals. Among JE cases, 22.4% had subnormal IQ, 18.4% subnormal ver…

A case of seizures induced by abstract reasoning.

We describe a case of reflex seizures induced by abstract reasoning but not other cognitive processes. The patient, a 46-year-old man, experienced myoclonic seizures whenever he played shogi (Japanese chess). To identify the critical thought processes responsible for inducing his seizures, we monitored his clinical seizures and epileptiform discharges while he performed comprehensive neuropsychological tests, including the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised (WAIS-R), spatial working memory, mental rotation, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) tasks. A myoclonic seizure occurred only

Correlation between neuropsychometric tests and semiquantitative evaluation of the regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) in a group of outpatients affected by cognitive impairment.

In order to evaluate the correlation between the cognitive-behavioral performances and the regional blood-perfusion deficits of the brain, 18 elderly subjects affected by dementia of probably primary degenerative character have been studied. The patients were first examined by psychometric tests and then submitted to brain Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) using [(99m)Technetium]-d,l-hexamethyl-propylene-amine-oxine (Tc-HMPAO) for regional blood flow evaluation (rCBF). The cognitive-behavioral functions have been estimated by Mini Mental State Examination (MMSE), Randt Memory

Executive Function Variation in Children With Conduct Problems: Influences of Coexisting Reading Difficulties.

It is unknown whether children with conduct problems (CP) and poor reading (PR) skills exhibit more profound executive function impairments than children with CP only and whether such impairments are explained by coexisting PR. Executive functions were compared in four groups of 7- to 8-year-old children: 26 CP only, 35 PR only, 27 CP-PR, and 31 comparison (COM) children with neither CP nor PR. The Conners' Teacher Rating Scale-28 and a sentence completion reading test were used to assess CP and PR skills. The Intellectual Profile of Adults with Specific Learning Disabilities.

Despite growing research on adults with specific learning disabilities (SLDs), evidence concerning their intellectual profile remains scarce. The present study examined the results of the administration of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Fourth Edition to 301 adults diagnosed with SLDs and compared them to the results obtained from previous studies with a large sample of children with SLDs. The results showed that: (1) as observed among children, adults with SLDs also presented higher scores in the subtests implying reasoning (associated with the General Ability Index, GAI) and lower sco

Neuroanatomical correlates of behavioral rating versus performance measures of working memory in typically developing children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The frequent lack of correspondence between performance and observational measures of executive functioning, including working memory, has raised questions about the validity of the observational measures. This study was conducted to investigate sources of this discrepancy through correlation of volumetric and cortical thickness (CT) neuroimaging values with performance and questionnaire measures of working memory (WM). METHODS: Using longitudinal data from the NIH MRI Study of Normal Brain Development (Volumes, N= 347, 54.3% female; CT, N= 350, 54.6% female; age range: 6 to 16.9 y

Autobiographical memory and social problem-solving in Asperger syndrome.

Difficulties in social interaction are a central feature of Asperger syndrome. Effective social interaction involves the ability to solve interpersonal problems as and when they occur. Here we examined social problem-solving in a group of adults with Asperger syndrome and control group matched for age, gender and IQ. We also assessed autobiographical memory, on a cueing task and during social problem-solving, and examined the relationship between access to specific past experiences and social problem-solving ability. Results demonstrated a social problem-solving impairment in the Asperger grou

Comparison of cognitive ability and its distribution between men with autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVES: Clarification of the strengths and weaknesses of cognitive ability is essential to our understanding of the characteristics of autism spectrum disorder and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. However, whether individuals with these conditions exhibit distinct patterns of cognitive ability remains unclear. To address this point, we aimed to compare the cognitive profiles of patients with autism spectrum disorder with those of patients with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder by placing special emphasis on the distribution of cognitive function within each group. METHODS:

The effect of repetition on pronoun resolution in patients with memory impairment.

Referring to things in the world - that woman, her idea, she - is a central component of language. Understanding reference requires the listener to keep track of the unfolding discourse history while integrating multiple sources of information to interpret the speech stream as it unfolds in time. Pronouns are a common way to establish reference. But due to their impoverished form, to understand them listeners must relate features of the pronoun (e.g., gender, animacy) with existing representations of potential discourse referents. Successful referential processing seems to place demands on mem

Specific Language Impairment and Reading Disability: Categorical Distinction or Continuum?

Specific language impairment (SLI) and reading disability (RD) are familial, moderately heritable comorbid developmental disorders. The key deficit of SLI is oral language, whereas children with RD exhibit impairment in learning to read. The present study examines the possible co-occurrence of RD and SLI and the nature of this co-occurrence at a linguistic and a cognitive level in an orthographically consistent language. Four groups of children participated in the study: an RD group ( n = 10), an SLI group ( n = 13), a possible comorbid group ( n = 9), and a control-no deficit group ( n = 20).
