Wildfire Ash Alters Freshwater Crustacean Behavior: Disentangling the Contributions of Suspended Macroparticles and Ash-Induced Alkalinization.

Climate change and anthropogenic ignitions are intensifying wildfire frequency worldwide, elevating the risk of freshwater contamination by ash. In water, dissolved ash releases ions and other toxic constituents that increase pH and alter physicochemical conditions, while suspended ash particles may impose mechanical stress, disrupt behavior, and increase exposure through ingestion. However, the relative contributions of these distinct ash exposure pathways to ecological toxicity remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated whether wildfire ash alters crustacean behavior and whether suspend

Simulated wildfire smoke particulate matter elicits STING-dependent astrocyte-mediated inflammatory signaling and neurotoxicity.

Changing global wildfire landscapes necessitate exploration of the effects of exposure to wildfire smoke on health and disease. Exposure to this toxicant is not only associated with acute cardiopulmonary dysfunction, but is increasingly recognized as a serious risk factor for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the cellular and molecular mechanisms which underlie this association are not well understood. One potential mechanism linking neurotoxic environmental exposures with neurodegeneration is glial-mediated neuroinflammation, wh

Bio-distribution and deposition of wildfire smoke chemicals into olfactory bulb and brain of rats after intranasal instillation.

Epidemiological and experimental studies suggest wildfire smoke is a potential contributor to neurological dysfunction and associated with neuroinflammation. Using doses comparable to those encountered during intense wildfire events (200-300 μg/m3), we explore the absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination (ADME) and pharmacokinetics of representative members of major chemical classes (acid, phenol, PAH, aldehyde) in inhaled wood smoke condensates. Male Sprague Dawley rats were intranasally instilled with smoldering eucalyptus woodsmoke extract (WSE) reconstituted in saline spiked w

Wildfire ashes: evaluating threats on the Pantanal wetland reserve (Mato Grosso, Brazil) using ecotoxicological tests.

In 2020, the largest continuous wetland area on the planet, the Brazilian Pantanal, experienced an unprecedented fire that affected the entire ecosystem. Our goal was to elucidate the effects of ash presence following the fire events. We quantified the impact of ashes, collected in four Conservation Units, on soil, water, and atmosphere. On the edaphic system, we tested the impact through behavioral and acute toxicity tests using annelids exposed to contaminated soil at different ash concentrations. We assessed the effect of ash on the flux of soil greenhouse gases. In the water, we examined t

Unravelling spatiotemporal heterogeneity of wildfire carbon dioxide emissions in Southeast Asia: based on a high-resolution inventory.

Wildfire carbon dioxide emissions (FCE) profoundly impact the climate and environment. Land use, meteorology, and other factors contribute to the spatial heterogeneity of FCE. High-resolution emission inventories enhance our understanding of the spatiotemporal characteristics of emissions, providing critical data for climate change and environmental studies. In this study, we developed a 500-m resolution FCE inventory by integrating burned area and fire radiative energy methods. Our integrated method combines the strengths of both the burned area and fire radiative energy methods, enhancing th

A model for rapid PM2.5 exposure estimates in wildfire conditions using routinely available data: rapidfire v0.1.3.

Urban smoke exposure events from large wildfires have become increasingly common in California and throughout the western United States. The ability to study the impacts of high smoke aerosol exposures from these events on the public is limited by the availability of high-quality, spatially resolved estimates of aerosol concentrations. Methods for assigning aerosol exposure often employ multiple data sets that are time-consuming to create and difficult to reproduce. As these events have gone from occasional to nearly annual in frequency, the need for rapid smoke exposure assessments has increa…

Appearance of Recalcitrant Dissolved Black Carbon and Dissolved Organic Sulfur in River Waters Following Wildfire Events.

Increasing wildfire frequency, a consequence of global climate change, releases incomplete combustion byproducts such as aquatic pyrogenic dissolved organic matter (DOM) and black carbon (DBC) into waters, posing a threat to water security. In August 2022, a series of severe wildfires occurred in Chongqing, China. Samples from seven locations along the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers revealed DBC, quantified by the benzene poly(carboxylic acid) (BPCA) method, comprising 9.5-19.2% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC). High concentrations of BPCA-DBC with significant polycondensation were detected near …

Influence of Wildfire on Urban Ozone: An Observationally Constrained Box Modeling Study at a Site in the Colorado Front Range.

Increasing trends in biomass burning emissions significantly impact air quality in North America. Enhanced mixing ratios of ozone (O3) in urban areas during smoke-impacted periods occur through transport of O3 produced within the smoke or through mixing of pyrogenic volatile organic compounds (PVOCs) with urban nitrogen oxides (NOx = NO + NO2) to enhance local O3 production. Here, we analyze a set of detailed chemical measurements, including carbon monoxide (CO), NOx, and speciated volatile organic compounds (VOCs), to evaluate the effects of smoke transported from relatively local and long-ra

The potential wildfire effects on mercury remobilization from topsoils and biomass in a smelter-polluted semi-arid area.

Wildfires can be responsible for significant mercury (Hg) emissions especially in contaminated areas. Here, we investigated the Hg distribution in topsoils and vegetation samples and temperature-dependent Hg mobilization from biomass-rich topsoils collected near a copper (Cu) smelter in Tsumeb (semi-arid Namibia), where Hg-rich Cu concentrates are processed. The thermo-desorption (TD) experiments conducted on representative biomass-rich topsoils (3.9-7.7 mg Hg/kg) indicated that more than 91% of the Hg was released at ∼340 °C, which corresponds to the predominant grassland-fire conditions. The…

Fatigue in Emergency Services Operations: Assessment of the Optimal Objective and Subjective Measures Using a Simulated Wildfire Deployment.

Under controlled laboratory conditions, neurobehavioral assays such as the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT) are sensitive to increasing levels of fatigue, and in general, tend to correlate with subjective ratings. However, laboratory studies specifically curtail physical activity, potentially limiting the applicability of such findings to field settings that involve physical work. In addition, laboratory studies typically involve healthy young male participants that are not always representative of a typical working population. In order to determine whether these findings extend to field-like

Regeneration After Severe Wildfire: Hotter Microclimates Exceed Hydraulic and Thermal Tolerances in Sierra Nevada Conifer Seedlings.

Tree seedling regeneration after wildfire will determine the long-term trajectory of forests under climate change, yet increasing drought and heat extremes can suppress regeneration and result in forest type conversion. We combined field observations and a controlled drought-heat growth chamber experiment to investigate how these stressors independently and jointly affect drought- and heat-tolerance physiology in seedlings of montane conifer species from drought- and wildfire-prone regions in the southern Sierra Nevada. In both the field and growth chamber experiment, we found that exposure to

A slow-release ionic crosslinking strategy for a sprayable ceramifiable sodium alginate hydrogel toward sustainable wildfire suppression.

Developing spray-applied fire-retardant materials for wildfire suppression requires rapid deployment, effective surface retention, and sustained protection after water loss and during prolonged heating. This poses a significant challenge to traditional water-based fire-retardant materials, whose protective effectiveness often decreases as water evaporates. Herein, a sprayable ceramifiable sodium alginate-based hydrogel is developed, enabled by the gradual release of Ca2+ from the CaCO3/GDL system under ambient conditions. The hydrogel retained water for up to 17 h at 60 °C. Among all formulati

Highlighting gaps in knowledge and capabilities that limit decision-making to protect the health of outdoor workers exposed to wildfire smoke.

Pollutants in smoke from wildland and wildland urban interface (WUI) fires present an increasing risk to outdoor workers, field technicians, and others as the frequency and severity of these fires increase due to expansion of the WUI, changing land management practices, and climate change. Recent advancements have improved our understanding and ability to track and model wildfires, smoke plume chemistry, and associated health impacts. There are indications that smoke from burning certain fuels, including artificial materials present in many WUI fires and other biomass burned under certain cond…

Wildfire-Season Fine Particulate Matter Exposure and Associations with Influenza and Influenza-like-Illness Risk in the Western USA.

BACKGROUND: Influenza remains a significant public health threat with pandemic potential. Understanding environmental factors influencing virus spread and severity is critical, particularly as wildfires become more frequent and intense. While temperature and humidity's roles in virus seasonality and persistence are well understood, the impacts of air pollution ─ especially wildfire-specific particulate matter (PM2.5) ─ on respiratory infections are less explored. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the association between wildfire PM2.5 exposure and influenza or influenza-like illness…
