Effects of excessive dietary zinc or zinc/cadmium and tapeworm infection on the biochemical parameters in rats.

The main objective of this study was to determine which biochemical blood parameters can serve as indicators of Zn or Zn/Cd burden and tapeworm infection. This study was performed on 44 Wistar male rats during a 6-week period, when rats were or were not fed a zinc/cadmium rich diet and were or were not infected with tapeworms (Hymenolepis diminuta). Total protein, albumin, urea, glucose, triacylglycerols, non-esterified fatty acids, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase, aspartate aminotransferase, uric acid, Mg, Ca, P and Zn levels were analysed. Control rats with tapeworm infection had significa

Excretion of Dietary Zinc in Mammals (rats) Fed Overdoses of Zinc Lactate and Infected with Tapeworms.

Tapeworms parasitize at sites that are important for the management of micronutrients, including zinc. Therefore, it has been hypothesized that tapeworms will significantly affect the excretion of zinc in the feces of a host. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects that tapeworms have on the excretion of zinc in the feces of the host. Rats were divided into 4 groups: groups 0T and MT (infected with Hymenolepis diminuta (Rudolphi, 1819)) and groups 00 and M0 (uninfected). The experimental groups (M0 and MT) were fed a standard rodent compound feed (ST-1) with added zinc lactate; the da

Serum Zinc Concentrations of Adults in an Outpatient Clinic and Risk Factors Associated With Zinc Deficiency.

CONTEXT: Subclinical features of zinc deficiency can be challenging to recognize. The prevalence of zinc deficiency based on blood zinc concentration in an adult outpatient clinic setting has not been well-studied. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the prevalence of low serum zinc concentrations among community-dwelling adults, and to characterize clinical features and risk factors associated with zinc deficiency. METHODS: This retrospective pilot prevalence study took place from 2014 to 2017 at an outpatient clinic in southeast Ohio. Patients aged 50 years or older with a stable health status were cat

Solubilization of insoluble zinc compounds by zinc solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) and optimization of their growth conditions.

In this research, the optimum growth conditions for two zinc solubilizing bacteria (ZSB) have been studied for their potential application as bioinoculants to overcome Zn unavailability in soils. For this purpose, a laboratory-scale experiment was carried out to evaluate the zinc solubilizing ability of 80 plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPB) strains isolated from the rhizosphere of barley and tomato plants. To select effective ZSB, isolates were evaluated on Tris-mineral medium supplemented separately with zinc oxide, zinc carbonate, and zinc phosphate at a concentration of 0.1%. Two strain

Supplemental levels of iron and calcium interfere with repletion of zinc status in zinc-deficient animals.

Negative interactions between minerals interfering with each other's absorption are of concern when iron and calcium supplements are given to pregnant women and children. We have previously reported that supplemental levels of iron and calcium inhibit the bioaccessibility of zinc, and compromise zinc status in rats fed diets with high levels of these two minerals. The present study examined the effect of supplemental levels of iron and calcium on the recovery of zinc status during a zinc repletion period in rats rendered zinc-deficient. Iron and calcium, both individually and in combination, s

Preparation and preliminary evaluation of 63Zn-zinc citrate as a novel PET imaging biomarker for zinc.

UNLABELLED: Abnormalities of zinc homeostasis are indicated in many human diseases. A noninvasive imaging method for monitoring zinc in the body would be useful to understand zinc dynamics in health and disease. To provide a PET imaging agent for zinc, we have investigated production of (63)Zn (half-life, 38.5 min) via the (63)Cu(p,n)(63)Zn reaction using isotopically enriched solutions of (63)Cu-copper nitrate. A solution target was used for rapid isolation of the (63)Zn radioisotope from the parent (63)Cu ions. Initial biologic evaluation was performed by biodistribution and PET imaging in n

Metallothionein, zinc, and mercury levels in tissues of young rats exposed to zinc and subsequently to mercury.

Several studies have described mercury toxicity and the role of metallothioneins (MT) in the detoxification and regulation of metal homeostasis. However, little data exist on this topic during the specific post-natal developmental phase in young mammals. This developmental phase is particularly important since young animals are more sensitive to toxicants than adults. The objective of this work was to investigate whether MT participates in the mechanism of protection conferred by zinc pre-treatment on the toxic effects induced by mercury in neonate rats. Pups were exposed to ZnCl(2) (5 doses o

The effect of various dietary zinc concentrations on the biological interactions of zinc, copper, and iron in rats.

Three groups (14 rats each) were fed one of the following diets for 8 wks: a control purified basal diet containing 12 ppm zinc, 5 ppm copper, and 35 ppm iron; the basal diet with less than 2 ppm zinc; or the basal diet supplemented with 1000 ppm zinc. Rats fed the zinc-deficient diet had decreased weight gain, moderate polydipsia, and intermittent mild diarrhea. The zinc-supplemented rats had a cyclical pattern of food intake and weight loss from weeks 5 to 8. Tissue concentrations suggest that zinc and copper were not mutually antagonistic with chronic dietary imbalances. If tissue element c

Zinc deficiency and the kidney. II. Response of zinc-deficient rats to three diuretic drugs.

Carbonic anhydrase is a zinc metalloenzyme whose activity may be affected by zinc deficiency. This investigation was designed to evaluate the effect of zinc deficiency on the response to three diuretic drugs which vary in their capacity to inhibit carbonic anhydrase: acetazolamide, furosemide and hydrochlorothiazide. The response of the zinc-deficient rats was compared to that of pair-fed and ad libitum zinc-supplemented controls. The pattern of electrolyte excretion by zinc-deficient rats in response to the three diuretics was qualitatively similar to that of the pair-fed and zinc-supplemente

Zinc gluconate for Wilson disease.

Due to financial constraints, a patient with Wilson disease required transitioning his maintenance pharmacotherapy from zinc acetate to zinc gluconate. Herein, we report the clinical and laboratory outcomes of this switch and review the relevant literature on the treatment of Wilson disease with zinc. Zinc gluconate can be a viable treatment option for patients with Wilson disease and may be associated with fewer gastrointestinal side effects than zinc acetate and, accordingly, improved long-term compliance and improved clinical outcomes.

Tryptophan regulates Drosophila zinc stores.

Zinc deficiency is commonly attributed to inadequate absorption of the metal. Instead, we show that body zinc stores in Drosophila melanogaster depend on tryptophan consumption. Hence, a dietary amino acid regulates zinc status of the whole insect—a finding consistent with the widespread requirement of zinc as a protein cofactor. Specifically, the tryptophan metabolite kynurenine is released from insect fat bodies and induces the formation of zinc storage granules in Malpighian tubules, where 3-hydroxykynurenine and xanthurenic acid act as endogenous zinc chelators. Kynurenine functions as a p

Optical Characterization of Zinc Pyrithione.

Zinc pyrithione is ubiquitous in commercial products particularly antidandruff shampoos. For the efficacy of zinc pyrithione therapeutic cleansers to be assessed accurately, the distribution of particles on the scalp needs to be visualized. Currently, no technique is available which provides the chemical specificity and sensitivity required. Here, we report application of fluorescence-lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) for high-contrast mapping of zinc pyrithione distribution on the scalp. Characterization of the zinc pyrithione emission by using both one-photon excitation at five specific wav

Zinc transporters in Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most devastating neurodegenerative disorder. Due to the increase in population and longevity, incidence will triple by the middle of the twenty-first century. So far, no treatment has prevented or reversed the disease. More than 20 years of multidisciplinary studies have shown that brain zinc dyshomeostasis may play a critical role in AD progression, which provides encouraging clues for metal-targeted therapies in the treatment of AD. Unfortunately, the pilot clinical application of zinc chelator and/or ionophore strategy, such as the use of quinoline-based comp

Zinc, Carnosine, and Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Zinc (Zn) is abundantly present in the brain, and accumulates in the synaptic vesicles. Synaptic Zn is released with neuronal excitation, and plays essential roles in learning and memory. Increasing evidence suggests that the disruption of Zn homeostasis is involved in various neurodegenerative diseases including Alzheimer's disease, a vascular type of dementia, and prion diseases. Our and other numerous studies suggest that carnosine (β-alanyl histidine) is protective against these neurodegenerative diseases. Carnosine is an endogenous dipeptide abundantly present in the skeletal muscles and

Zinc supplementation in public health.

Zinc is necessary for physiological processes including defense against infections. Zinc deficiency is responsible for 4% of global child morbidity and mortality. Zinc supplements given for 10-14 days together with low-osmolarity oral rehydration solution (Lo-ORS) are recommended for the treatment of childhood diarrhea. In children aged ≥ 6 months, daily zinc supplements reduce the duration of acute diarrhea episodes by 12 h and persistent diarrhea by 17 h. Zinc supplements could reduce diarrhea mortality in children aged 12-59 months by an estimated 23%; they are very safe but are associated

Aluminium and zinc phosphide poisoning.

INTRODUCTION: Aluminium and zinc phosphides are highly effective insecticides and rodenticides and are used widely to protect grain in stores and during its transportation. Acute poisoning with these compounds may be direct due to ingestion of the salts or indirect from accidental inhalation of phosphine generated during their approved use. MECHANISMS OF TOXICITY: Both forms of poisoning are mediated by phosphine which has been thought to be toxic because it inhibits cytochrome c oxidase. While phosphine does inhibit cytochrome C oxidase in vitro, the inhibition is much less in vivo. It has b
