The 3' flanking region of the human ABO histo-blood group gene is involved in negative regulation of gene expression.

Gene expression is driven by promoters, enhancers, silencers, and other cis-regulatory elements upstream and downstream of the gene. Previous studies of the regulation of human ABO gene transcription have focused mainly on the 5' region, including the core promoter and the region proximal to it. However, as the involvement of the 3' flanking region in transcriptional regulation has not yet been examined, we focused on this issue. The 3' region approximately 2.2kb downstream of the ABO gene was PCR-amplified and inserted into a cloning vector, followed by sequence determination and preparation

Heart transplantation with ABO-identical versus ABO-compatible cardiac grafts: influence on long-term survival.

OBJECTIVES: To compare identical versus compatible, ABO blood group matching effects on rejection and long-term survival after heart transplantation (HT). DESIGN: Data were collected from 196 patients who underwent HT at Lund University Hospital between 1988 and 2008. Cox proportion hazard regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with reduced long-term survival. RESULTS: One hundred and sixty six patients (85%) had an identical ABO blood group match and 30 patients (15%) had a compatible, ABO blood group match. Four non-pharmacological variables reducing overall survival w

ABO blood group-incompatible living donor kidney transplantation: a prospective, single-centre analysis including serial protocol biopsies.

BACKGROUND: ABO incompatible kidney transplantation using antigen-specific immunoadsorption is increasingly performed but data on outcome, complications and protocol biopsies are still scarce. The present prospective single-centre study was aimed at these issues. METHODS: This was a prospective single-centre cohort study of 10 successive ABO incompatible living donor kidney transplantations at the University Hospital Basel from September 2005 to October 2007. The following parameters were closely monitored during the whole follow-up: graft function, albuminuria, blood group antibody titres, C

ABO phenotype and other risk factors associated with chorioamnionitis.

OBJECTIVE: To examine risk factors associated with chorioamnionitis. STUDY DESIGN: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data on women who delivered prematurely (< 37 weeks of gestation) over a 12-year period. Eleven potential risk factors were identified. Subjects were stratified according to their blood type into 2 groups: group 1, subjects with anti-B antibodies (blood types A and O), and group 2, subjects without anti-B antibodies (blood types B and AB). Univariate, bivariate, and logistic regression analyses were done to examine risk factors for chorioamnionitis while controlli

Population differences in von Willebrand factor levels affect the diagnosis of von Willebrand disease in African-American women.

Diagnosis of von Willebrand disease (vWD) is based on a panel of laboratory tests that measure the amount and function of von Willebrand factor (vWF). In population studies, vWF is higher in African Americans than Caucasians. Bleeding time, factor VIII activity (FVIII), vWF antigen (vWF:Ag), "vWF activity" ELISA (vWF:Act), ristocetin cofactor (vWF:RCof), and ristocetin-induced platelet aggregation (RIPA) were measured on 123 women with menorrhagia and 123 randomly selected control women; 70 cases and 76 controls were African American. Among controls, African Americans had significantly higher

Lectin histochemistry of fallopian tube epithelial cells. Relation to ovum transport and ovum pickup.

OBJECTIVE: Data on histochemical and biochemical characteristics of the human oviduct are scarce. The exact mechanisms of ovum transport and pickup are not fully understood. STUDY DESIGN: Human fallopian tubes were obtained and prepared for histochemistry. We analyzed the distribution of negatively charged groups on the oviduct epithelium and cumulus cells and examined the distribution of glycoconjugates by means of lectin histochemistry. We tested the possible influence of poly-L-lysine and considered ABO blood group expression since these characteristics are determined by specific terminal

[The immunological factors characterizing neurochorioretinitis].

Comprehensive clinical and immunologic studies carried out in 38 patients with neurochorioretinitis have demonstrated the contribution of infection to the etiology and pathogenesis of this condition and helped identify the nature, mostly infectious, of the condition in 55.3% of patients. Toxoplasma infection, revealed in 39.5% of cases, is one of the major etiologic factors of neurochorioretinitis. Tuberculous etiology of the condition is more rare (7.9% of cases). The autoimmune systemic component was detected in 7.9% of the examinees. Immunopathologic shifts, presenting as hyperimmunoglobuli

Difference in the ability of blood group-specific lectins and monoclonal antibodies to recognize the ABH antigens in human tissues.

Twelve different kinds of blood group-specific lectins have been used along with monoclonal anti-A, -B and -H antibodies for detecting the corresponding antigens in selected human tissues. Although most of the lectins recognized the antigens in the tissue sections examined, they displayed marked differences in their recognition patterns in certain tissues. Helix asparsa agglutinin (HAA), Helix pomatia agglutinin (HPA) and monoclonal anti-A antibody recognized A antigens in the mucous cells of salivary glands from blood group A or AB nonsecretor as well as secretor individuals, whereas Dolichos

Survey of neonatal jaundice in Port Moresby.

Neonatal jaundice is a common problem in Port Moresby. A survey was carried out on 50 consecutive jaundiced neonates in an attempt to delineate the causes of severe neonatal jaundice (bilirubin 15 mg. % or more). ABO blood group incompatibility, G-6-P-D deficiency and infection accounted for 62% of cases while no cause could be found in 38% of cases. Low birth weight, multiple births, male sex, asphyxia, delivery occuring outside the hospital, and vacuum extraction were associated more commonly with jaundiced neonates than with the controls. There was a statistically significant association be

A genetic linkage map of human chromosome 9q.

A genetic linkage map of human chromosome 9q, spanning a sex-equal distance of 125 cM, has been developed by genotyping 26 loci in the Venezuelan Reference Pedigree. The loci include 12 anonymous microsatellite markers reported by Kwiatkowski et al. (1992), several classical systems previously assigned to chromosome 9q, and polymorphisms for the genes tenacin (HXB), gelsolin (GSN), adenylate kinase 1 (AK1), arginosuccinate synthetase (ASS), ABL oncogene (ABL1), ABO blood group (ABO), and dopamine beta-hydroxylase (DBH). Only a marginally significant sex difference is found along the entire len

How do I…Incorporate a two-sample blood type verification in a pediatric hospital?

BACKGROUND: The AABB (American Association of Blood Banks) and the College of American Pathologists (CAP) regulations call on blood banks to address the risk of misidentification of a patient's blood type, which can result in transfusion of a mismatched product. Transfusion of mismatched blood product is potentially fatal due to acute hemolytic transfusion reaction and is considered a preventable event. CAP regulations outline options to reduce risk of mistransfusion by either documenting the ABO group of the intended recipient on a second sample collected at a separate phlebotomy, or utilizin

Audit of pre-transfusion testing practices in hospital blood banks across Tanzania: A national survey.

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is a lifesaving procedure performed across all healthcare levels in Tanzania. Despite significant investment in blood collection and screening, hospital transfusion practices have received less attention. With haemovigilance systems still in development, the understanding of pre-transfusion testing quality remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate hospital blood bank practices in conducting pre-transfusion procedures prior to issuing blood for transfusion. METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2024 to March 202

Prevalence of antibodies to a new histo-blood system: the FORS system.

BACKGROUND: In 1987, three unrelated English families were reported with a putative blood subgroup called Apae. Swedish researchers later found evidence leading to abolishment of the Apae subgroup and establishment instead of the FORS blood group system (System 31 - ISBT, 2012). It is important to know the prevalence of antibodies in order to make the best decisions in transfusion medicine. Cells expressing the Forssman saccharide, such as sheep erythrocytes, are needed to detect the anti-Forssman antibody. The aim of this study was to define the prevalence of human anti-Forssman antibody. MA

Predictive factors for readmission due to neonatal hyperbilirubinemia: A retrospective case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperbilirubinemia is a common cause of hospital readmission among neonates, but the factors contributing to post-discharge readmission remain unclear. Our study aimed to identify predictive factors associated with readmission for neonatal hyperbilirubinemia. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study included 421 neonates born at ≥ 35 weeks of gestation with hyperbilirubinemia between January and December 2021. The neonates were divided into a readmission group and a control group, and logistic regression was used to identify predictive factors associated with readmission. RE

Prognostic value of ABO blood groups in upfront operated pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas.

PURPOSE: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has been shown to have a lower incidence in patients with blood group O. It is currently uncertain if patients with group O have a better prognosis after pancreatectomy. This study assessed the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) of PDAC patients who underwent upfront pancreatoduodenectomy based on ABO blood groups. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed including patients from two university centers. All consecutive head PDAC patients who underwent upfront pancreatoduodenectomy from 2000 to 2016 were included. OS and

Pure Red Cell Aplasia following ABO-Mismatched Allogeneic Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation: Resolution with Daratumumab Treatment.

Pure red cell aplasia (PRCA) can potentially occur after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT) if recipient and donor ABO blood groups are mismatched, with the recipient having isoagglutinins against the donor blood group. Patient plasma cells that survive transplant conditioning produce anti-ABO isoagglutinins targeting donor erythroid precursors in the bone marrow and thus causing red cell aplasia. Therapeutic options include steroids, discontinuation of immunosuppression, plasmapheresis, donor lymphocyte infusion, rituximab, and bortezomib, all with limited benefit.
