Motor and cognitive development at one-year follow-up in infants with torticollis.

BACKGROUND: Clinical experience suggests infants with torticollis are at risk for developmental delay. AIMS: To examine gross motor (GM) skills at presentation in infants with torticollis; report first-year GM and cognitive outcomes; examine relationship between types of torticollis and above outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective follow-up study. SUBJECTS: Infants referred to 2 regional child development centers from April 2001-December 2002 with torticollis/head tilt and no perinatal complications syndromes were studied. OUTCOME MEASURES: GM function was measured using the Alberta Infant Mo…

Absence of sex differences in pharmacotherapy for acute myocardial infarction.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have indicated that sex differences may exist in the pharmacological management of acute myocardial infarction (AMI), with female patients being treated less aggressively. OBJECTIVES: To determine if previously reported sex differences in AMI medication use were also evident among all AMI patients treated at hospitals in an urban Canadian city. METHODS: All patients who had a primary discharge diagnosis of AMI from all three adult care hospitals in Calgary, Alberta, in the 1998/1999 fiscal year were identified from hospital administrative records (n=914). A stand…

Perinatal antibiotic usage and changes in colonization and resistance rates of group B streptococcus and other pathogens.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify current antibiotic usage during the perinatal period and impact on vaginal-rectal colonizing organism resistance rates. METHODS: Swabs were obtained for culture of group B streptococcus and other bacteria from a cohort of 1207 pregnant women in Calgary, Alberta, at 36 weeks' gestation. Those women who received antibiotics during labor or after pregnancy and a 10% subset who received no antibiotics had repeat cultures at 6 weeks postpartum. Cultured organisms were tested for sensitivity to several antibiotics. RESULTS: Group B streptococcus was identified in 235 women (…

Necessity and death: lessons from Latimer and the case of the conjoined twins.

The availability of the defence of necessity in cases of homicide is a complex issue in both Canadian and British jurisprudence. This article examines the divergent judicial and academic views and argues that, while necessity may be available for certain kinds of homicide, it should be rejected as a legitimate defence to intentional killings. The author looks closely at two recent cases in which the question arose as to whether or not killing a human being is ever justifiable or excusable on the basis of necessity: the Canadian case of R. v. Latimer and the British case of Re A (Children). The

Incidence of Adrenal Masses Eventually Discovered in Patients Screened for Primary Aldosteronism.

CONTEXT: Biochemical screening for endocrine hypertension may be complex; the known presence of an adrenal mass markedly increases the pretest probability for adrenal hypertension and may inform diagnostic efforts. OBJECTIVE: Model the potential incidence of adrenal masses that may be detected by routine adrenal imaging in patients with suspected endocrine hypertension. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Provincial administrative and clinical databases for radiology and biochemistry, Alberta, Canada. PARTICIPANTS: Patients with hypertension and any measurement of aldosterone-reni…

Liver Transplantation Outcomes in Younger Versus Older Adult Recipients: The Edmonton Experience.

INTRODUCTION: Liver transplantation (LT) offers a lifesaving treatment for patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD). There have been conflicting reports of outcomes in younger and elderly patients undergoing LT. This study assesses the outcomes of younger and elderly LT recipients by complications and graft survival at early and late time-points, up to 10 years. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted on a prospectively collected database of patients who underwent LT between January 2011 and December 2021 at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton, Canada. RES…

INTRODUCTION: There has been an increasing demand for imaging methods that provide a comprehensive evaluation of intracranial clot and colla … ater than 7 (p = 0.011). A smaller final infarct size and a higher diffusion-weighted imaging-based Alberta Stroke Program Early Computed Tomography Score were observed in the group with collateral scores greater than 1 (all p < 0.05). This program was instituted at the height of wave 2 of the COVID-19 pandemic in Alberta during staff redeployment and 100% shift to telemedicine ambulatory care. Our results demonstrate that amid a crisis, quality improvement can still be effective with education and provision of tools for clinicians.

OBJECTIVE: This study seeks to determine the prevalence and nature of cannabis use in patients with headache in a tertiary headache clinic and to explore patients' empiric experience in using cannabinoids therapeutically. BACKGROUND: Many patients with headache report cannabinoid use as an effective abortive and/or preventive therapy. Mounting evidence implicates cannabinoids in pain mechanisms pertaining to migraine and other headache types. METHODS: A cross-sectional study surveyed 200 patients presenting with any headache disorder to a tertiary headache clinic in Calgary, Alberta. Descrip…
