The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of increased oxygen tensions on short-term memory in mice following one-trial, passive-avoidance learning. Neither increased oxygen tensions per se nor 6 ATA air had any measurable deleterious effects on retention of the learned task. Interference with memory of the learned task occurred only when the animals were subjected to oxygen-induced convulsions. It is known that pressure equalization via the trachea may diminish or prevent lung damage in explosive decompression. In this report, evidence is presented which demonstrates that closure of the trachea does not affect lethality in mice exposed to maximally rapid decompression. This observation suggests that in maximally rapid decompression the lungs and thorax may be treated as a closed system to which Boyle's Law might be applicable.

A 2-year analysis of specimens among aircrew personnel in Southeast Asia is reported. Stool specimens were examined for intestinal parasites and enteric bacteria, blood smears for blood parasites, and sera tested for transaminases (SGOT) and antibodies to Entamoeba histolytica, Toxoplasma gondii, Chikungunya and Japanese encephalitis viruses, Rickettsia tsutsugamushi, Leptospira sp. and Pseudomonas pseudomallei. The U.S. Navy diving accident records of 2,500 cases for the years 1933 to 1970 were analyzed and sorted into Type I and Type II decompression sickness.
