Modelling the transmission dynamics of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis: application to the 2003 outbreak in Mexico.

We model an outbreak of acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis (AHC) using a simple epidemic model that includes susceptible, infectious, reported, and recovered classes. The model's framework considers the impact of underreporting and behaviour changes on the transmission rate and is applied to a recent epidemic of AHC in Mexico, using a fit to the cumulative number of cases to estimate model parameters, which agree with those derived from clinical studies. The model predicts a 'mean time from symptomatic onset to diagnosis' of 1.43 days (95 per cent CI: 1-2.5) and that the final size of the Mexic

Enviromics crosstalk between internal and external plant environments for enhanced adaptation and de novo domestication.

Climate change demands accelerated plant adaptation and de novo domestication. Yet current enviromics focuses disproportionately on external environments, neglecting internal dynamics-gene expression, metabolic flux, and signal transduction-within predictive envirotyping frameworks. This gap constrains plant-environment adaptation research and crop improvement. Integrating multi-scale envirotyping with plant-environment interaction networks could catalyze a paradigm shift from empirical selection to mechanism-informed design breeding. Four challenges remain: (1) constructing adaptive multi-dim

Phylogenetic insights into the transmission dynamics of arthropod-borne viruses.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) impose substantial global health and economic burdens, affecting both human and animal populations. These viruses - including dengue, chikungunya, Rift Valley fever, Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and bluetongue viruses - have complex transmission cycles involving vertebrate hosts and arthropod vectors. Their circulation in livestock and wildlife complicate surveillance, as traditional epidemiological approaches rely mainly on human clinical data. Climate change and increasing global interconnectedness are accelerating their emergence and invasion, neces

Modeling solutions for microbial water contamination in the global south for public health protection.

Microbial contamination of water sources is a pressing global challenge, disproportionately affecting developing regions with inadequate infrastructure and limited access to safe drinking water. In the Global South, waterborne pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and helminths contribute to diseases like cholera, dysentery, and typhoid fever, resulting in severe public health burdens. Predictive modeling emerges as a pivotal tool in addressing these challenges, offering data-driven insights to anticipate contamination events and optimize mitigation strategies. This review highlights

A predictive model for Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever epidemics.

A statistical model for predicting monthly Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases from the city of Makassar is developed and tested. The model uses past and present DHF cases, climate and meteorological observations as inputs. These inputs are selected using a stepwise regression method to predict future DHF cases. The model is tested independently and its skill assessed using two skill measures. Using the selected variables as inputs, the model is capable of predicting a moderately-severe epidemic at lead times of up to six months. The most important input variable in the prediction is the pres

Diversity and seasonality of ectoparasite burden on two species of Madagascar fruit bat, Eidolon dupreanum and Rousettus madagascariensis.

BACKGROUND: Bats are important reservoir hosts for a variety of pathogens, some of which are transmitted by ectoparasite vectors including mites, fleas, lice, ticks, and bat flies (families Nycteribiidae and Streblidae). All these ectoparasite taxa are known to parasitize two endemic fruit bats of Madagascar, Eidolon dupreanum and Rousettus madagascariensis. We aimed to describe the diversity of ectoparasite infestation for both bat species through morphological observation and DNA barcoding and elucidate ecological and climatic correlates of seasonal nycteribiid parasitism of these hosts. The spatio-temporal distribution of acute encephalitis syndrome and its association with climate and landcover in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Acute encephalitis syndrome (AES) differs in its spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam with the highest incidence seen during the summer months in the northern provinces. AES has multiple aetiologies, and the cause remains unknown in many cases. While vector-borne disease such as Japanese encephalitis and dengue virus and non-vector-borne diseases such as influenza and enterovirus show evidence of seasonality, associations with climate variables and the spatio-temporal distribution in Vietnam differs between these. The aim of this study was therefore to understand the spatio-temp

Land-use management and climate change can enhance the autotrophic capacity and reduce the CO2 emissions of karst aquatic ecosystems.

The carbon flux involved in aquatic metabolism in karst surface waters is an important component of both regional and global carbon cycling. Yet, the mechanisms of how aquatic metabolism and the related carbon flux respond to human land use and climate change in a high-pH aquatic environment remain unclear. To address this, we conducted continuous high-frequency (15-min interval) monitoring of hydrochemical parameters, combined with a bookkeeping model and gas transport velocity model, to estimate the aquatic net ecosystem primary (NEP) and water-air CO2 exchange flux (FCO2) under different la

Tracking gastrointestinal nematode risk on cattle farms through pasture contamination mapping.

Gastrointestinal nematode (GIN) parasites in grazing cattle are a major cause of production loss and their control is increasingly difficult due to anthelmintic resistance and climate change. Rotational grazing can support control and decrease reliance on chemical intervention, but is often complex due to the need to track grazing periods and infection levels, and the effect of weather on larval availability. In this paper, a simulation model was developed to predict the availability of infective larvae of the bovine GIN, Ostertagia ostertagi, at the level of individual pastures. The model was

The Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever tick vector Hyalomma marginatum in the south of France: Modelling its distribution and determination of factors influencing its establishment in a newly invaded area.

We developed a correlative model at high resolution for predicting the distribution of one of the main vectors of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), Hyalomma marginatum, in a recently colonised area, namely southern France. About 931 H. marginatum adult ticks were sampled on horses from 2016 to 2019 and 2021 in 14 southern French departments, which resulted in the first H. marginatum detection map on a large portion of the national territory. Such updated presence/absence data, as well as the mean number of H. marginatum per examined animal (mean parasitic load) as a proxy of tick

High-Resolution Ecological Niche Modeling of Ixodes scapularis Ticks Based on Passive Surveillance Data at the Northern Frontier of Lyme Disease Emergence in North America.

BACKGROUND: Lyme disease (LD) is a bacterial infection transmitted by the black-legged tick (Ixodes scapularis) in eastern North America. It is an emerging disease in Canada due to the expanding range of its tick vector. Environmental risk maps for LD, based on the distribution of the black-legged tick, have focused on coarse determinants such as climate. However, climatic factors vary little within individual health units, the level at which local public health decision-making takes place. We hypothesize that high-resolution environmental data and routinely collected passive surveillance data

Eco-Emotion Profiles Among Parents and Links to Violent and Neglectful Parenting: Parental Burnout as a Mediating Pathway.

Climate change is a psychosocial stressor with implications for parenting and child safety. Many parents experience eco-emotions that can tax caregiving resources and self-regulation, yet evidence is scarce on how eco-emotion profiles relate to parental burnout and violent and neglectful parenting. This study aimed to identify eco-emotion profiles and to test whether parental burnout explains associations with psychological aggression, physical assault, and neglect toward children. Participants were 1,203 cisgender heterosexual Italian parents (70.16% mothers; M = 45.60, SD = 9.37) who complet

Diet impacts the effects of thermal stress on infection outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Climate change can lead to warmer environments, facilitating higher pathogen growth and increasing disease burden. Climate change can also reduce the nutritional value of food resources, causing malnutrition, which can lead to impaired immunity and disease vulnerability. However, despite these associations, no experiments have tested how dietary manipulations and temperature variations interact to drive the effects of pathogenic infections. In this work, we conducted laboratory experiments with the model insect Drosophila melanogaster to test these effects. RESULTS: Virgin flies ra

Seed shattering habit in millets and the secrets of the abscission layer - a comprehensive review.

Though seed shattering continues to be a significant barrier affecting yield stability and harvesting efficiency in millets and other grasses, millets are increasingly acknowledged as climate-resilient, nutrient-rich 2007cereal crops with the potential to strengthen global nutritional and food security under the combined pressures of climate change, population growth, and limited natural resources. Since strong artificial selection favoured non-shattering phenotypes during domestication, seed shattering, an adaptive trait in wild species that promotes seed dispersal through the formation and a

A soil microbial indicator framework for ecological effect assessment of heavy metal risks in red mud stockpiles: A meta-analysis of available evidence.

Red mud stockpiles may pose long-term heavy-metal-related risks to surrounding soils, yet microbial indicators for ecological effect assessment remain poorly defined. Because direct microbial evidence from red mud stockpiles is limited, published studies on heavy metal contaminated soils were synthesized to screen candidate indicators for this scenario. This meta-analysis integrated 116 studies comprising 763 observations and quantified responses of microbial biomass, alpha diversity, community structure, beta diversity, and enzyme activities to cadmium, mercury, arsenic, lead, chromium, coppe
