[Tumor localization and treatment of tumor-induced osteomalacia].

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) or oncogenic osteomalacia (OOM) is a rare paraneoplastic renal phosphate wasting syndrome. The disease is mostly triggered by small, benign mesenchymal tumors that express somatostatin receptors (SSTR) and produce excessive levels of fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF 23) or other phosphatonins. These reduce the phosphate back resorption in the proximal tubules of the kidneys, thereby causing hypophosphatemia and lead to an absolute or relatively low calcitriol serum concentration. The main symptoms include muscle weakness, bone pain and recurrent insufficiency f

Capturing Cognitive Aging in Vivo: Application of a Neuropsychological Framework for Emerging Digital Tools.

As the global burden of dementia continues to plague our healthcare systems, efficient, objective, and sensitive tools to detect neurodegenerative disease and capture meaningful changes in everyday cognition are increasingly needed. Emerging digital tools present a promising option to address many drawbacks of current approaches, with contexts of use that include early detection, risk stratification, prognosis, and outcome measurement. However, conceptual models to guide hypotheses and interpretation of results from digital tools are lacking and are needed to sort and organize the large amount

Data-driven analysis of gaze patterns in face perception: Methodological and clinical contributions.

Gaze patterns during face perception have been shown to relate to psychiatric symptoms. Standard analysis of gaze behavior includes calculating fixations within arbitrarily predetermined areas of interest. In contrast to this approach, we present an objective, data-driven method for the analysis of gaze patterns and their relation to diagnostic test scores. This method was applied to data acquired in an adult sample (N = 111) of psychiatry outpatients while they freely looked at images of human faces. Dimensional symptom scores of autism, attention deficit, and depression were collected. A lin

[FDG PET/CT FOR TREATMENT RESPONSE ASSESSMENT IN CANCER].

FDG PET/CT (fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET) computed tomography (CT)) imaging reflects functional-metabolic changes occurring within the malignant process in response to therapy. Since these changes usually precede anatomic alterations, this imaging technique is highly valuable in assessing response during and after therapy and is superior to CT. FDG PET/CT following initiation of cancer therapy has a prognostic value, predicting progression free survival and overall survival. In some malignancies FDG PET/CT can guide personalized medicine by tailoring therapy in ac

Facial expressions can detect Parkinson's disease: preliminary evidence from videos collected online.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

A prevalent symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) is hypomimia - reduced facial expressions. In this paper, we present a method for diagnosing PD that utilizes the study of micro-expressions. We analyzed the facial action units (AU) from 1812 videos of 604 individuals (61 with PD and 543 without PD, with a mean age 63.9 y/o, sd. 7.8) collected online through a web-based tool ( www.parktest.net ). In these videos, participants were asked to make three facial expressions (a smiling, disgusted, and surprised face) followed by a neutral face. Using techniques from computer vision and machine learnin

EEG in motion: Using an oddball task to explore motor interference in active skateboarding.

Recent advancements in portable computer devices have opened new avenues in the study of human cognition outside research laboratories. This flexibility in methodology has led to the publication of several electroencephalography studies recording brain responses in real-world scenarios such as cycling and walking outside. In the present study, we tested the classic auditory oddball task while participants moved around an indoor running track using an electric skateboard. This novel approach allows for the study of attention in motion while virtually removing body movement. Using the skateboard

A hypothetical skin sensitisation next generation risk assessment for coumarin in cosmetic products.

Next generation Risk Assessment (NGRA) is an exposure-led, hypothesis-driven approach which integrates new approach methodologies (NAMs) to assure safety without generating animal data. This hypothetical skin allergy risk assessment of two consumer products - face cream containing 0.1% coumarin and deodorant containing 1% coumarin - demonstrates the application of our skin allergy NGRA framework which incorporates our Skin Allergy Risk Assessment (SARA) Model. SARA uses Bayesian statistics to provide a human relevant point of departure and risk metric for a given chemical exposure based upon i

An update on boar semen assessments by flow cytometry and CASA.

In the quest for predicting fertility of an individual, enhancing semen handling, dilution and storage protocols, and understanding the impact of environment and, andrologists have changed their approaches to semen analysis. The technologies used today are fast developing and readily implemented in research. Semen is one of a few naturally occurring monocellular suspensions, so sperm function analysis by flow cytometry (FC) and utilization of fluorochromes is an ideal technique for high throughput, objective and accurate analysis. The complementary use of microscopical assessments by Computer-

Non-destructive 3D Microtomography of Cerebral Angioarchitecture Changes Following Ischemic Stroke in Rats Using Synchrotron Radiation.

A better understanding of functional changes in the cerebral microvasculature following ischemic injury is essential to elucidate the pathogenesis of stroke. Up to now, the simultaneous depiction and stereological analysis of 3D micro-architectural changes of brain vasculature with network disorders remains a technical challenge. We aimed to explore the three dimensional (3D) microstructural changes of microvasculature in the rat brain on 4, 6 hours, 3 and 18 days post-ischemia using synchrotron radiation micro-computed tomography (SRμCT) with a per pixel size of 5.2 μm. Segmentation of the uterine wall by an ensemble of fully convolutional neural networks.

In the past decades, the number of in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedures for the conception of a child has been rising continuously, however, the success rate of artificial insemination remained low. According to current statistics, large portion of unsuccessful IVF relates to some women' factors. As the directly related female organ, the proper investigation of the uterus has primary importance. Namely, visible markers may indicate inflammations or other negative effects that jeopardize successful implantation. The purpose of this study is to support the observability of the uterus from thi

Mapping the intersection of language and reading: the neural bases of the primary systems hypothesis.

The primary systems framework has been used to relate behavioural performance across many different language activities to the status of core underpinning domain-general cognitive systems. This study provided the first quantitative investigation of this account at both behavioural and neural levels in a group of patients with chronic post-stroke aphasia. Principal components analysis was used to distil orthogonal measures of phonological and semantic processing, which were then related to reading performance and the underlying lesion distributions using voxel-based correlational methodology. Ultrasound Imaging of Apoptosis: Spectroscopic Detection of DNA-Damage Effects In Vivo.

In this chapter, we describe two new methodologies: (1) application of high-frequency ultrasound spectroscopy for in vivo detection of cancer cell death in small animal models, and (2) extension of ultrasound spectroscopy to the lower frequency range (i.e., 1-10 MHz range) for the detection of cell death in vivo in preclinical and clinical settings. Experiments using tumor xenografts in mice and cancer treatments based on chemotherapy are described. Finally, we describe how one can detect cancer response to treatment in patients noninvasively early (within 1 week of treatment initiation) using

A Community Needs Index for Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Program Planning: Application of Spatial Generalized Linear Mixed Models.

Objective The objective is to estimate community needs with respect to risky adolescent sexual behavior in a way that is risk-adjusted for multiple community factors. Methods Generalized linear mixed modeling was applied for estimating teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease (STD) incidence by postal ZIP code in New York State, in a way that adjusts for other community covariables and residual spatial autocorrelation. A community needs index was then obtained by summing the risk-adjusted estimates of pregnancy and STD cases. Results Poisson regression with a spatial random effect was c

First principles optimally tuned range-separated density functional theory for prediction of phosphorus-hydrogen spin-spin coupling constants.

Optimally tuned range-separated (OT-RS) density functional theory (DFT) is a recent endeavor toward the systematic and non-empirical routes for designing the exchange-correlation functionals. Herein, a detailed analysis of the development and benchmarking of the OT-RS functionals for predicting the experimental nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spin-spin coupling constants (SSCCs) in diverse sets of compounds containing phosphorus-hydrogen (P-H) bonds has been done. More specifically, besides analyzing the performances of standard long-range corrected (LC) functionals, two new non-empirical OT-

Ecotype evolution in Glossina palpalis subspecies, major vectors of sleeping sickness.

BACKGROUND: The role of environmental factors in driving adaptive trajectories of living organisms is still being debated. This is even more important to understand when dealing with important neglected diseases and their vectors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In this paper, we analysed genetic divergence, computed from seven microsatellite loci, of 614 tsetse flies (Glossina palpalis gambiensis and Glossina palpalis palpalis, major vectors of animal and human trypanosomes) from 28 sites of West and Central Africa. We found that the two subspecies are so divergent that they deserve the spec
