Palatally impacted maxillary canines.

In a special article entitled, "Impacted Maxillary Canines: A Review," Samir E. Bishara states: "The ectopic eruption and impaction of maxillary permanent canines is a frequently encountered clinical problem. The diagnosis and treatment of this problem usually requires the expertise and cooperation of the general practitioner, the paediatric dentist, the oral surgeon, and the periodontist, as well as the orthodontist." We will review the etiology, diagnosis and treatment of impacted maxillary canines. A technique will be outlined that allows a competent orthodontic clinician to singly, efficie

Childhood Lead Exposure and the Risk of Dental Caries in Permanent Teeth: The Cincinnati Lead Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental caries is a significant public health problem in the United States. The evidence on the association between lead exposure and dental caries is conflicting because the impact of childhood lead exposure on the prevalence of caries in young adults has not been evaluated in prospective cohort studies. OBJECTIVE: To assess the association of prenatal and postnatal childhood lead exposure with dental caries in young adults living in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States. METHODS: We examined 206 predominately African American participants aged 16 to 22 y in the Cincinnati Lead Study

Comparison of the efficiencies of permanent maxillary tooth removal performed with single buccal infiltration versus routine buccal and palatal injection.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to demonstrate whether articaine/HCl administered alone as a single buccal infiltration in maxillary tooth removal provided favorable palatal anesthesia as compared to buccal and palatal injection, for a surgical procedure. STUDY DESIGN: In total, 71 patients for removal of bilateral permanent maxillary teeth were enrolled in the present study. For the experimental side, 1.7 mL of 4% articaine/HCl was injected into the buccal vestibule of the tooth. After 5 minutes, tooth extraction was performed. On the control side a similar protocol was applied w

Household smoking as a risk indicator for caries in adolescents' permanent teeth.

This study investigated the association between household member's (HHM) smoking or secondhand smoke exposure and caries, using a cross-sectional sample of adolescents who had both dental examination and data on HHM smoking (n = 1,873). The results suggest that HHM smoking may be a risk indicator for caries in adolescents' permanent teeth.

Impact of Fluoride on Associations between Free Sugars Intake and Dental Caries in US Children.

OBJECTIVE: Dental caries is the most prevalent chronic disease in US children, with the highest burden among Black and Hispanic youth. Sugars are a primary risk factor, but few studies have specifically measured intakes of free sugars and related this to dental caries or explored the extent to which water fluoride mitigates the cariogenicity of free sugars. Furthermore, the cariogenicity of certain free sugars sources, such as extruded fruit and vegetable products, is unclear. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data on 4,906 children aged 2 to 19 y in the US National Health and Nutrition Examinat

Comparison of dental findings between dentists and pediatricians using intraoral scan-based teledentistry in children.

BACKGROUND: Asynchronous transmission of health information via teledentistry offers the potential for remote diagnosis in pediatric dentistry. The aim of this study was to compare teledental findings obtained from intraoral scans (IOS) with those from conventional visual examinations (VIS) in children. Specifically, the study assessed the diagnostic accuracy of teledentistry using IOS in evaluating oral health and determining treatment needs focusing on comparisons between dentists and pediatricians. METHODS: Children (mean age 10.04 ± 2.90 years) underwent VIS during routine dental examinat

Effect of preparation design on the fracture behavior of 3D-printed restorations in an in-vitro tooth wear model.

BACKGROUND: Additive manufacturing technologies have introduced new nanohybrid resin composites for permanent indirect restorations. However, limited evidence exists regarding the mechanical performance of 3D-printed restorations in managing occlusal wear. This study evaluated the effect of preparation design on fracture resistance, preparation time, and failure modes of 3D-printed restorations. METHODS: Forty maxillary premolars were allocated to four groups (n = 10): sound teeth (ST), overlay (OV), veneerlay (VL), and full crown (FC). Experimental groups received standardized 1.0–1.2 mm occl

Decompression of a Mandibular Dentigerous Cyst Using a Dual-Purpose Removable Appliance in a Pediatric Patient: A Case Report.

Dentigerous cysts (DCs) are among the most common odontogenic lesions in mixed dentition. Management strategies vary from radical enucleation-often necessitating the removal of associated tooth germs-to more conservative decompression techniques. In pediatric patients, decompression is preferred as it preserves developing permanent teeth and supports normal eruption. In January 2023, an 8.5-year-old male presented to the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, Akdeniz University, with swelling in the right mandibular region. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a unilocular radiolucent le

Dynamic navigation for quad zygomatic implant placement in an ectodermal dysplasia patient with total anodontia: a case report with 5-year follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Ectodermal dysplasia (ED) is a hereditary condition stemming from genetic defects that disrupt the development of ectoderm-derived tissues, affecting structures such as hair, teeth, nails, and sweat glands. A rare manifestation of ED is anodontia, the complete congenital absence of both primary and permanent dentition. This absence leads to underdeveloped alveolar ridges, significantly complicating dental rehabilitation efforts. CASE PRESENTATION: This case report details the management of a 27-year-old female patient with ED and anodontia who presented with a fragile zygomatic bo
