Identifying correlations between nutritional impact symptoms and risk factors for malnutrition in adult cancer patients with solid tumors: a cross-sectional study from a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Many cancer patients experience malnutrition, which can worsen their health and survival outcomes. However, limited research exists in our region on how common malnutrition is among hospitalized adults with solid tumors and what factors contribute to it. This study aimed to identify these factors and assess the effects of nutritional impact symptoms (NISs) caused by solid tumors on patients' nutritional status. METHODS: Between July 2022 and February 2023, a cross-sectional study was carried out on the campuses of two major cancer treatment centers located in a national university

Maintaining paediatric cardiac services during the COVID-19 pandemic in a developing country in sub-Saharan Africa: guidelines for a "scale up" in the face of a global "scale down".

The COVID-19 pandemic is currently ravaging the globe and the African continent is not left out. While the direct effects of the pandemic in regard to morbidity and mortality appear to be more significant in the developed world, the indirect harmful effects on already insufficient healthcare infrastructure on the African continent would in the long term be more detrimental to the populace. Women and children form a significant vulnerable population in underserved areas such as the sub-Saharan region, and expectedly will experience the disadvantages of limited healthcare coverage which is a maj

Clinical presentation, risk factors and pathogens involved in bacteriuria of pregnant women attending antenatal clinic of 3 hospitals in a developing country: a cross sectional analytic study.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy increases the risk of recurrent bacteriuria and acute pyelonephritis which is associated with significant maternal and fetal risks. The prevalence of bacteriuria varies worldwide. Clinical diagnosis is challenging since it is usually mistaken for normal physiological changes during pregnancy. This study aims to determine the prevalence, clinical presentation, risk factors and microorganism responsible for bacteriuria in pregnant women of Douala city, Cameroun. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 3 hospitals of Douala from January to April 2015. We consecuti

Adapting the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model of police-mental health collaboration in a low-income, post-conflict country: curriculum development in Liberia, West Africa.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a curriculum and collaboration model for law enforcement and mental health services in Liberia, West Africa. METHODS: In 2013 we conducted key informant interviews with law enforcement officers, mental health clinicians, and mental health service users in Liberia, and facilitated a 3-day curriculum workshop. RESULTS: Mental health service users reported prior violent interactions with officers. Officers and clinicians identified incarceration and lack of treatment of mental health service users as key problems, and they jointly drafted a curriculum based upon

Home-Based Learning Opportunities, Responsive Caregiving and the Development of Preschool-Aged Children in Low- and Middle-Income Countries of the East Asia and Pacific Region: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Optimal early childhood development predicts lifelong health and well-being. A child's immediate environment, especially the home, shapes cognitive, physical, language, motor, social and emotional development. Contextually relevant data on the proximal settings that support preschool-aged children are lacking in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) across the East Asia and Pacific region. This systematic review synthesises evidence on associations between home-based learning opportunities and caregiving experiences and the cognitive and overall development of children aged 2-5

Clinical and epidemiological comparison between perimesencephalic and non-perimesencephalic, non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage: a single-center cohort study from a referral center in a developing country.

BACKGROUND: Non-aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) represents a heterogeneous entity with implications for management and prognosis. Perimesencephalic SAH (PSAH) is associated with a more benign clinical course, lower rates of complications, and favorable outcomes, whereas non-perimesencephalic SAH (NPSAH) tends to present with higher rates of vasospasm, hydrocephalus, and worse neurological outcomes. Recognizing these distinct bleeding patterns is, therefore, essential for clinical management. OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to analyze a series of patients with nonaneurysmal SAH, sin

Effects of disability on early childhood development in 3 to 4-year-old children in three South Asian countries: evidence from multiple indicators cluster surveys.

BACKGROUND: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) prioritize optimal early childhood development (ECD) for all children, emphasizing the principle of leaving no one behind. Despite this focus, the association between disability and ECD remains largely unknown in low- and middle-income countries. This study aims to investigate the impact of disability on ECD among 3 to 4-year-old children in three South Asian countries. METHODS: Data from 56,841 children were analyzed, extracted from six rounds of Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys conducted in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Pakistan between 2017 a

Evaluation of late effects during a 21-year follow-up of pediatric Hodgkin lymphoma survivors: Experience of a pediatric cancer center in Turkey, as a developing country model.

BACKGROUND: Long-term survivors of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) are at risk of developing a range of late effects, with a second malignant neoplasm and cardiovascular diseases being the leading causes of death in these patients. The present study aims to evaluate the late side effects in children with HL. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Out of 53 HL patients, we assessed the long-term effects of childhood HL survivors (HLSs; n = 50) diagnosed between 1998 and 2019. Patient data related to chronic health conditions, and sociodemographic characteristics were compared with their siblings ( n = 56). RESULTS: Th

Complex Coronary Artery Lesions in a Young Woman With an Acute Myocardial Infarction and Genetically Confirmed Familial Hypercholesterolemia: A Case Report and Literature Review From a Developing Country.

Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetic disorder characterized by elevated levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in the blood from an incredibly early age. This condition leads to the early development of atherosclerotic arterial diseases, which can manifest even in the first few decades of life. Mutations in genes related to the LDL receptor (LDL-R), apolipoprotein B (APOB), and proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) are the main molecular mechanisms causing familial hypercholesterolemia. This case involves a 44-year-old Vietnamese female who presented a

The Agency, Resources, and Institutional Structures for Sanitation-related Empowerment (ARISE) Scales: Development and validation of measures of women's empowerment in urban sanitation for low- and middle-income countries.

Sustainable Development Goal 6 aims to ensure access to water and sanitation for all, and target 6.2 emphasizes "paying special attention to the needs of women and girls". Research documenting how water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) conditions impact women's and girls' lives is growing. However, no rigorously validated survey instruments exist for measuring empowerment within the WASH sector. The objective of our study was to develop and validate survey instruments to measure sub-domains of women's empowerment in relation to sanitation in urban areas of low- and middle-income countries. We fo

Clinico-pathological initial outcome of a newly adopted novel surgical technique for nodal metastatic thyroid cancer at a large-volume centre in a high-income developing country.

INTRODUCTION: Thyroid cancer is the most common tumour in the endocrine system. In the past decade, the incidence of lymph node metastasis has increased, and so has the patient demand for a smaller scar. This research reports the surgical and patho-oncological short-term outcomes of a novel, minimally invasive neck dissection approach for thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastases at the UAE's leading endocrine surgery centre. METHODS: This study employed a prospectively maintained surgical database to retrospectively analyse relevant parameters such as surgical complications, including ble
