Reducing Body Myopathy in Female Patients With FHL1 Variants Showing Rapid and Severe Evolution Mimicking Inflammatory Myopathy: A Case Series.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Reducing body myopathy (RBM) is a rare inherited disorder, due to pathogenic variant in the FHL1 gene. The disease is characterized by protein aggregates in myocytes strongly stained with menadione-nitro blue tetrazolium with α-glycerophosphate and immunoreactive for FHL1 as myopathologic hallmarks. RBM is an X-linked dominant disorder, with the most severe cases occurring in hemizygous sporadic male patients, who usually present with early onset and rapid progression. This study aimed to comprehensively analyse a cohort of FHL1 female patients presenting with a seve

The burden of bone disease in Duchenne muscular dystrophy: age-specific prevalence of osteoporosis and low bone density.

UNLABELLED: We evaluated fracture and osteoporosis prevalence in a large cohort of children with DMD undergoing routine spine imaging. Osteoporosis is common and worsens with age and glucocorticoid use. Low total body bone mineral density may herald clinically detectable osteoporosis. Our findings emphasize the need for better detection and prevention. INTRODUCTION: Osteoporosis is a major health concern in individuals with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) due to long-term glucocorticoid (GC) therapy, muscle weakness and restricted mobility. Osteoporosis results in long bone and vertebral fr

Bilateral Pathological Femoral Fractures Secondary to Long-Term Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate-Induced Osteomalacia in a Woman Living with HIV: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: People living with HIV on long-term antiretroviral therapy (ART) face increased risks of bone loss and fragility fractures, partly due to tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), a commonly used nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor. TDF is associated with proximal tubular dysfunction, renal phosphate wasting, osteomalacia, and pathological fractures. This case highlights severe, bilateral femoral fractures as a rare but debilitating manifestation of chronic TDF-induced osteomalacia in a postmenopausal woman. CASE PRESENTATION: A 43-year-old African woman with HIV (diagnosed >15

From options to decisions: an innovative model for treatment sequencing in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis.

AIMS: With the expanding range of disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS), clinicians face increasing complexity in defining optimal treatment sequences and timing of therapy switches. In this study, we adapted an earlier computer-assisted model to optimize therapeutic decisions and identify preferred treatment pathways, based on expert opinion and observations from clinical practice in Spain. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The original model was updated to integrate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) activity data and define reaching an Expanded Disability

Extensive striated muscle damage in a rat model of Duchenne muscular dystrophy with Dmd exons 10-17 duplication.

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) mainly affects young boys with out-of-frame mutations in the DMD gene, leading to dystrophin deficiency. This loss disrupts the assembly of the sarcolemmal dystrophin-associated glycoprotein complex, resulting in membrane fragility and damage during muscle contraction-relaxation cycles. Consequently, patients experience progressive muscle weakness, loss of ambulation and cardiorespiratory failure. Gene therapy represents one of the most promising therapeutic approaches, requiring rigorous preclinical validation of candidate strategies. While severa

Associated factors of frailty among community-dwelling older adults with multimorbidity from a health ecological perspective: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: As the global aging process accelerates, the older population is increasing annually, with the majority suffering from one or more chronic diseases. Due to the influence of chronic disease comorbidity, frailty among the older is widespread. Therefore, early identification of frailty in older adults with comorbidities from a comprehensive perspective, along with proactive measures for prevention and timely intervention, becomes an inevitable requirement for healthy aging. This study aimed to identify the entry point of frailty management in the older with multimorbidity in the commu

Optimizing Postoperative Mobility: A Review of Enhanced Recovery after Surgery Protocols for Pedicled Flap-Based Pelvic Reconstructions.

Surgical reconstruction of pelvic defects aims to restore pelvic floor anatomy and function after oncological resection, infection, or trauma. The functional demands of the pelvis and proximity to anogenital flora can complicate wound healing, often necessitating locoregional flap reconstruction. While enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols have shown benefits in other surgeries, they lack standardization for pedicled flap-based pelvic and perineal reconstructions.PubMed and Embase were queried for articles from January 2000 to January 2025 reporting pedicled flap-based pelvic and pe

A qualitative exploratory interview study on birth companion support actions for women during childbirth.

BACKGROUND: The World Health Organization recommends that women are supported continuously throughout labor by a companion of their choice. And, that companions have clearly designated roles and responsibilities to ensure that their presence is beneficial to both the woman and her health care providers. Presently, there is lack of strong evidence regarding specific support actions in relation to women's needs of care. Thus, we aimed to explore birth companion support actions for women during childbirth. METHODS: This was an exploratory descriptive qualitative study conducted between August 20
