Experimental evaluation of a new implant material in frontal sinus obliteration: a preliminary report.

Frontal osteoplasty with exogenous material has been uniformly unsuccessful both experimentally and clinically. Our experiment was designed to test the long-term behavior of a new poly (tetrafluoroethylene)-carbon fiber implant material (Proplast) in a canine frontal sinus model. Varying conditions such as removal of the sinus mucoperiosteum, closure of the nasofrontal ducts, exposure of dura mater, and cerebrospinal fluid leaks were studied at intervals up to one year. Proplast was 100% successful in obliteration of the canine frontal sinus. The ultraporous nature allowed rapid vascularizatio

[Pott's puffy tumour: innovative technique in calvarial reconstruction].

BACKGROUND: Pott's puffy tumour is a rare complication of sinusitis. This osteomyelitis can affect the outer and inner tables of the frontal sinus. The treatment of Pott's puffy tumour combines medical and surgical approaches. Surgical approaches have traditionally been open, but endoscopic techniques have been adopted recently in select cases. The bony defect from debridement can be left alone, or closed with autografts or allografts. OBJECTIVE: To describe a technique for the reconstruction of a large skull vault after the debridement of extensive osteomyelitis of the anterior cranial vault

A methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) Sequence Type 8, spa type t11469 causing infection and colonizing horses in Italy.

A Methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus(MRSA) was isolated in Italy from a pathological sample of a mare presenting chronic purulent sinusitis and that had undergone frontal-sinus surgery three months before. Humans, horses, dogs and environmental samples were subsequently collected at the mare's stable and at the Veterinary Hospital, where the mare was operated/hospitalized, and screened for the presence of MRSA that was detected from other horses and from the environment at both sites. All the MRSA isolates belonged to clonal complex (CC)8, ST8-t11469-SCCmec-IVa, and showed similar phen

[Olfactory neuroblastoma removed under endoscopic guidance].

INTRODUCTION: Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare tumour associated with high rates of recurrence and mortality. Treatment includes surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or a combination. The ideal treatment modality has yet to be determined. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 46-years old male underwent bilateral endoscopic ethmoidectomy due to chronic sinusitis. During surgery, a 5 mm in diameter tumour was identified in the left superior nasal meatus. On histopathological examination the diagnosis of esthesioneuroblastoma was established and confirmed by immunohistochemistry. The tumour was classified acc

[An autopsy case of fungal (Mucor) cerebral aneurysm].

An autopsy of rupture of Mucor cerebral aneurysm, not diagnosed during the patient's life, was experienced. A 63-year-old female was admitted to our hospital with the chief complaint of disturbance of consciousness and high fever. Her past histories were diabetes mellitus, liver cirrhosis and nasal sinusitis. The remarkable findings on admission were moderate inflammatory data, high blood sugar level in serum and ascites. Brain CT film revealed a non-enhanced low-density area in the frontal region. The cerebrospinal fluid showed bloody color and white blood cell counts were 3300/microliter (mo

Prevalence and clinical presentation of sinusitis in pediatric age group in Aseer, Saudi Arabia.

BACKGROUND: Paediatric rhinosinusitis is mostly different than that in adults. More frequently, children presented with cough, bad breath, crankiness, low energy, and swelling around the eyes, besides a thick yellow-green nasal or post-nasal discharge. About 5- 13% of childhood viral upper respiratory tract infections may advance to acute rhinosinusitis, with some of them developing a chronic condition. AIM: To assess prevalence and clinical presentation of sinusitis in the paediatric age group in Aseer, Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: A retrospective record-based study was conducted in Abha Mate

Human nasal ciliary-beat frequency in normal and chronic sinusitis subjects.

OBJECTIVE: Ciliary-beat frequency (CBF) is an important factor influencing mucociliary flow in the respiratory tract. A significant correlation exists between CBF and mucus transport time (MTT), which suggests that CBF is the main factor in nasal mucociliary clearance in healthy individuals. Mucociliary clearance is influenced by the temperature of the inspired air and decreases at temperatures below 33 degrees C. It is unknown whether CBF varies in different sites within the nasal chamber and exactly how CBF is altered in disease states such as chronic sinusitis (CS) and nasal polyposis (NP).

A Case of Post-COVID-19 Rhino-Cerebral Mucormycosis in an Immunocompromised Patient.

Mucormycosis is a fulminant angioinvasive fungal infection that occurs in an immunocompromised condition, most commonly in diabetic patients. Rhino-cerebral and pulmonary infections are common but may also lead to disseminated disease associated with a high mortality rate (almost 100%). Here we report on an elderly diabetic lady presented with a headache and altered level of consciousness and peri-orbital swelling following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Imaging studies revealed a single large space-occupying lesion in the frontal lobe extending to the left orbit and sinusitis. An excisi

An Instructive Case of Cerebral Mucormycosis.

BACKGROUND: Mucormycosis can lead to fatal rhinocerebral infection. CASE: A 53-year-old male with diabetes presented with altered mental status. He had been recently discharged from an admission for COVID-19 pneumonia treated with remdesivir and methylprednisolone. Imaging demonstrated a large left frontal mass with midline shift suspicious for a primary brain neoplasm. His neurologic exam rapidly declined and the patient was taken to the operating room for decompressive hemicraniectomy. Post-operatively, the patient remained comatose and failed to improve. Autopsy revealed a cerebral mucormy

Radioiodine sinus uptake related to mucosal thickening or aspergilloma: a case series of an unrecognized event well evidenced by SPECT/CT.

BACKGROUND: False-positive radioiodine (RAI) uptake related to chronic sinusitis and mucocele has only rarely been reported in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) even with the recent use of single photon emission tomography with computed tomography (SPECT/CT) acquisition. No other etiology of sinus RAI uptake has been mentioned to date. OBJECTIVES: We report five cases of DTC patients with sinus RAI uptake on post-RAI scintigraphy. SPECT/CT clearly localized RAI uptake either in the sphenoid, the maxillary or the frontal sinus and highly suspected mucosal thickening in four pat

Fungal Internal Carotid Artery Aneurysm Treated by Trapping and High-Flow Bypass: A Case Report and Literature Review.

We report a case of unruptured fungal internal carotid artery (ICA) aneurysm and review the pertinent literature. A 79-year-old man presented with decreased visual acuity on the right side, and he was diagnosed with retrobulbar optic neuritis. Medical treatment with steroids resulted in Aspergillus meningoencephalitis spreading to the bottom of bilateral frontal lobes, caused by an intracranial extension of sphenoid sinusitis. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) performed 26 days after the start of antifungal therapy showed a denovo right ICA aneurysm projecting anteriorly into the sphenoid sinus
