Basal Hippocampal Activity and Its Functional Connectivity Predicts Cocaine Relapse.

BACKGROUND: Cocaine-induced neuroplastic changes may result in a heightened propensity for relapse. Using regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) as a marker of basal neuronal activity, this study assessed alterations in rCBF and related resting state functional connectivity (rsFC) to prospectively predict relapse in patients following treatment for cocaine use disorder (CUD). METHODS: Pseudocontinuous arterial spin labeling functional magnetic resonance imaging and resting blood oxygen level-dependent functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired in the same scan session in abstinent

Abnormal gray matter and white matter volume in 'Internet gaming addicts'.

Internet gaming addiction (IGA) is usually defined as the inability of an individual to control his/her use of the Internet with serious negative consequences. It is becoming a prevalent mental health concern around the world. To understand whether Internet gaming addiction contributes to cerebral structural changes, the present study examined the brain gray matter density and white matter density changes in participants suffering IGA using voxel-based morphometric analysis. Compared with the healthy controls (N=36, 22.2 ± 3.13 years), IGA participants (N=35, 22.28 ± 2.54 years) showed signifi

Functional connectivity of the frontoparietal network predicts cognitive modulation of pain.

The experience of pain can be significantly influenced by expectancy (predictive cues). This ability to modulate pain has the potential to affect therapeutic analgesia substantially and constitutes a foundation for nonpharmacological pain relief. In this study, we investigated (1) brain regions involved in visual cue modulation of pain during anticipation of pain, pain administration, and pain rating; and (2) the association between pretest resting state functional connectivity and the magnitude of cue effects on pain ratings. We found that after cue conditioning, visual cues can significantly

Fronto-limbic dysfunction in borderline personality disorder: a 18F-FDG positron emission tomography study.

INTRODUCTION: Several functional neuroimaging studies have demonstrated abnormalities in fronto-limbic pathways when comparing borderline personality disorder (BPD) patients with controls. The present study aimed to evaluate regional cerebral metabolism in euthymic BPD patients with similar measured impulsivity levels by means of 18F-FDG PET during resting state and to compare them against a control group. METHODS: The present study evaluates regional cerebral metabolism in 8 euthymic BPD patients with 18F-FDG PET during resting state as compared to 8 controls with similar socio-geographic ch

One milligram of lorazepam does not decrease anxiety induced by CCK-4 in healthy volunteers: investigation of neural correlates with BOLD MRI.

Benzodiazepine effects on cholecystokinin tetrapeptide (CCK-4)-induced panic attack (PA) in humans are incompletely characterized, in particular on the neurofunctional level. This work explores the effects of lorazepam on brain activity and behavioral and physiological symptoms related to CCK-4-induced PA in healthy volunteers. Twenty-one male volunteers received 1 mg of lorazepam or placebo orally, 2 hours before an injection of 0.9% saline solution followed by 50 µg of CCK-4 during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and heart rate recording. Panic attacks were defined using the pan

Three-dimensional mapping of hippocampal anatomy in adolescents with bipolar disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Early-onset bipolar disorder is thought to be a particularly severe variant of the illness. Continuity with the adult form of illness remains unresolved, but preliminary evidence suggests similar biological underpinnings. Recently, we observed localized hippocampal decreases in unmedicated adults with bipolar disorder that were not detectable with conventional volumetric measures. Using the same three-dimensional mapping methods, we sought to investigate whether a similar pattern exists in adolescents with bipolar disorder. METHOD: High-resolution brain magnetic resonance images we

Functional disintegration in paranoid schizophrenia using resting-state fMRI.

Functional disintegration has been observed in schizophrenia during task performance. We sought to investigate functional disintegration during rest because an intrinsic functional brain organization, including both "task-negative" (i.e., "default mode") and "task-positive" networks, has been suggested to play an important role in integrating ongoing information processing. Additionally, the brain regions that are involved in the intrinsic organization are believed to be abnormal in schizophrenia. Patients with paranoid schizophrenia (N=18) and healthy volunteers (N=18) underwent a resting-sta

Attention orienting dysfunction during salient novel stimulus processing in schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is characterised by marked disturbances of attention and information processing. Patients experience difficulty focusing on relevant cues and avoiding distraction by irrelevant stimuli. Event-related potential recordings indicate an amplitude reduction in the P3a component elicited by involuntary orienting to task-irrelevant, infrequent novel stimuli presented during auditory oddball detection in patients with schizophrenia. The goal of the present study was to elucidate the functional abnormality underlying the disturbed orienting to novel stimuli in schizophrenia. Twenty-eight

Methamphetamine users in sustained abstinence: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal patterns of metabolite levels have been detected by magnetic resonance spectroscopy in frontostriatal regions of individuals meeting DSM-IV criteria for methamphetamine dependence, but less is known about the effects of drug abstinence on metabolite levels. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of long-term methamphetamine use and drug abstinence on brain metabolite levels. DESIGN: To assess regional specific metabolite levels using magnetic resonance spectroscopy imaging techniques in 2 groups of currently abstinent methamphetamine users: methamphetamine users who recently i

A single case-study of diagonistic dyspraxia.

Diagonistic dyspraxia is a clinical syndrome usually characterized by involuntary and conflicting behaviors between the hands following corpus callosum lesions. In the present study, we report the case of a patient who presents such symptoms, along with a series of complex abnormal behaviors, such as carrying out an action and subsequently doing the exact opposite, or being unable to choose between two alternative decisions. The data reported in this study indicate that, at least in some patients, diagonistic dyspraxia can be associated with abnormal, antagonistic, behaviors not limited to the

Preserved ability to recognize keywords related to remote events in the absence of retrieval of relevant knowledge: a case of postencephalitic amnesia.

We describe a case of severe anterograde and retrograde amnesia resulting from herpes simplex encephalitis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed pathological changes in the bilateral hippocampi, parahippocampal gyri, fusiform gyri, medial temporal poles, posterior part of the cingulate gyri, and insula. The patient showed severe amnesia for autobiographical episodic memory in relation to events that had occurred throughout her life, but temporally graded amnesia for autobiographical semantic memory, and severe amnesia without a temporal gradient for public events and famous people. However, usi

Brain activation during script-driven imagery induced dissociative responses in PTSD: a functional magnetic resonance imaging investigation.

BACKGROUND: The goal of this study was to examine the neuronal circuitry underlying dissociative responses to traumatic script-driven imagery in sexual-abuse-related posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Pilot studies in our laboratory have shown that PTSD patients had very different responses to traumatic script-driven imagery. Approximately 70% of patients relived their traumatic experience and showed an increase in heart rate while recalling the traumatic memory. The other 30% of patients had a dissociative response with no concomitant increase in heart rate. This article focuses on the lat

Anterior cingulate metabolism correlates with stroop errors in paranoid schizophrenia patients.

UNLABELLED: Using [O-15]-H(2)O PET Carter et al. (1997) reported that medicated patients with schizophrenia performing computerized single trial Stroop (1935) showed a reduction in the anterior cingulate activation response to the more attention demanding, incongruent Stroop condition. In that study, both patients and controls also showed a direct correlation between anterior cingulate activation and errors committed during incongruent trials of the task. In this study we follow up with an examination of paranoid schizophrenia outpatients and controls with very high resolution positron emissio

Clinical-neuroendocrinological syndromes due to lesions of the cingulate gyrus in humans.

Clinical and neuroendocrinological studies were performed in 41 patients with arteriovenous malformations (AVM) of the cingulate gyrus. Before surgery, the primary affliction in 38 patients consisted of memory disturbance, 5 of these having signs of Korsakov's syndrome. Autonomic and epileptic fits were not typical. Of 38 patients undergoing surgery, postoperative worsening of memory occurred in 23, but no qualitatively new disturbances appeared. Korsakov's syndrome appeared de novo after surgery in 3 patients. The extent of memory disturbances correlated with the extent of lesions to the cing

Functional connectivity density as a biomarker for Alzheimer's disease: Distinct neural mechanisms in young- and late-onset subtypes.

BACKGROUND: Alzheimer's disease (AD) shows distinct trajectories of cognitive decline based on age of onset, highlighting the need for reliable functional biomarkers. AIM: This study aims to evaluate whether functional connectivity density (FCD) can serve as a functional biomarker linking tau pathology to cognition, either directly or as a mediator. METHODS: We included 52 cognitively unimpaired controls, 54 late-onset AD (LOAD), and 44 young-onset AD (YOAD) patients who underwent amyloid and [F18]Florzolotau PET, resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and two cognitive t

Alpha-Oscillatory Current Application Impacts Prospective Remembering Through Strategic Monitoring.

Prospective memory (PM) is the ability to remember to execute future intentions. PM requires engagement of attentional networks, in which oscillatory activity in the alpha frequency range has been implicated. The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) and inferior parietal cortex are assumed to be engaged during PM tasks. We hypothesized that the selective application of transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) at alpha frequency to these areas can modulate PM-associated event-related potentials. Participants were assigned to alpha-tACS, theta-tACS, or Sham stimulation. They pe

Interrelations between dopaminergic-, gabaergic- and glutamatergic neurotransmitters in antipsychotic-naïve psychosis patients and the association to initial treatment response.

Preclinical evidence points to disturbances in neural networks in psychosis involving interrelations between dopaminergic-, GABAergic- and glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems. In support, we have previously shown that aberrant interrelations between these neurotransmitters, in contrast to individual transmitter systems, can separate antipsychotic-naïve first-episode psychotic patients (AN-FEP) from healthy controls (HC). Here, we characterized neurotransmitter interrelations, examined their association with treatment response, and explored the effect of treatment on the interrelations. Sixt

Specific Associations in the Alpha Frequency Between the Subcomponents of Rumination and the Subsystems of the Default Mode Network Among Bipolar I Disorder Patients.

Introduction: Rumination in bipolar disorder (BD) is well documented. Recent neuroimaging studies highlight the role of the default mode network (DMN) in rumination, while few studies have evaluated the DMN activity in BD rumination, particularly the underlying neuroelectrophysiology. Methods: A total of 44 patients with depressed bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and 46 healthy controls underwent resting-state magnetoencephalography. Two core hubs of the DMN, the posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), and anterior medial prefrontal cortex, together with the dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) and the
