Neural network-based screening (NNS) in cervical cytology: no need for the light microscope?

Neural network-based screening (NNS) of cervical smears can be performed as a so-called "hybrid screening method," in which parts of the cases are additionally studied by light microscope, and it can also be used as "pure" NNS, in which the cytological diagnosis is based only on the digital images, generated by the NNS system. A random enriched sample of 985 cases, in a previous study diagnosed by hybrid NNS, was drawn to be screened by pure NNS. This study population comprised 192 women with (pre)neoplasia of the cervix, and 793 negative cases. With pure NNS, more cases were recognized as sev

A method for the automated classification of benign and malignant masses on digital breast tomosynthesis images using machine learning and radiomic features.

In digital mammography, which is used for the early detection of breast tumors, oversight may occur due to overlap between normal tissues and lesions. However, since digital breast tomosynthesis can acquire three-dimensional images, tissue overlapping is reduced, and, therefore, the shape and distribution of the lesions can be easily identified. However, it is often difficult to distinguish between benign and malignant breast lesions on images, and the diagnostic accuracy can be reduced due to complications from radiological interpretations, owing to acquisition of a higher number of images. Trustworthy Multi-Modal Ultrasound Fusion via Uncertainty Calibration and Conflict Resolution.

Multi-modal ultrasound combines tissue information from multiple imaging perspectives, enabling more comprehensive lesion assessment. However, conventional multi-view learning methods typically assume uniform modality quality, ignoring variability caused by imaging noise and patient-specific factors. This oversight limits diagnostic reliability, especially when some modalities provide uncertain or conflicting information. To address this, we identify two key challenges in multi-modal ultrasound fusion: 1) how to quantify modality-wise uncertainty, and 2) how to resolve conflicts among predicti

A multi-view DTI feature fusion framework for enhanced diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disorder. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is widely used to detect brain alterations for diagnosis, but most methods rely on single-scale information. Therefore, this study proposes the multi-view feature learning framework incorporating residual block-based 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) for AD diagnosis. First, tract-based spatial statistics were applied to extract voxel-based features from fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) maps. Second, the residual block-based 3D-CNN model was employed to extract high

AsyCMST: Asymmetric cross-modal spatio-temporal learning for multimodal ultrasound nodule recognition.

Multimodal ultrasound combining B-mode ultrasound (BUS) and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) has become a powerful tool for diagnosing superficial nodules in the thyroid and breast, leveraging the complementary strengths of BUS spatial structure and CEUS temporal hemodynamics. However, existing fusion methods typically treat both modalities symmetrically or focus solely on modality-specific features, overlooking the inherent asymmetric bidirectional guidance between BUS spatial context and CEUS perfusion dynamics. To address this limitation, we propose AsyCMST, an asymmetric cross-modal spa

Detection of Prostate Cancer in 3-Dimensional Pathology Datasets via Generative Immunolabeling.

Recent advancements in nondestructive 3-dimensional (3D) pathology offer a complement to standard histology by enabling comprehensive volumetric analyses of intact clinical specimens (eg, biopsies). Previous studies have demonstrated the added prognostic value of 3D pathology for prostate cancer (PCa) risk stratification by correlating 3D microarchitectural features with long-term patient outcomes. However, these analyses relied on coarse manual annotations of cancer-enriched regions for downstream analysis without fine-grained delineation between often-intermixed cancerous and benign glands.

An advanced hybrid deep learning framework for high-precision brain tumor detection and classification in MRI scans.

Early and accurate identification of brain tumors from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is essential for timely clinical intervention; however, manual interpretation remains time-consuming and dependent on expert analysis. The study proposes MultiAttenNet, a hybrid deep learning framework that integrates multi-scale convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for hierarchical feature extraction and Transformer-based attention mechanisms for global contextual learning, within a semi-supervised learning paradigm. The multi-scale feature extraction improves robustness in detecting tumors of varying size

Clinical Applications of Right Ventricular Strain by Two-Dimensional Speckle-Tracking Echocardiography.

Assessment of right ventricular (RV) function by two-dimensional (2D) echocardiography remains challenging due to complex geometry, limited acoustic windows, and the angle dependency of conventional parameters. RV longitudinal strain, derived from 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography, has emerged as a quantitative, angle-independent marker of myocardial deformation, enabling earlier detection of dysfunction and providing incremental diagnostic and prognostic value beyond traditional indices in selected settings. RV free-wall longitudinal strain is most commonly used in clinical practice, with

Multicontrast MR-Guided Diffusion Model for Ultra-Low-Dose Brain PET Denoising in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a critical imaging modality in nuclear medicine but requires radioactive tracer administration, which increases radiation exposure risks. While recent studies have investigated MR-guided low-dose PET denoising, they neglect two critical factors: the synergistic roles of multicontrast MR images and disease-specific denoising requirements. In this work, we propose a diffusion model that integrates T1-weighted, T2 fluid attenuated inversion recovery (T2 FLAIR), and hippocampal-optimized (T2 HIPPO) MR sequences to achieve ultra-low-dose PET denoising tailored

Extreme cardiac MRI analysis under respiratory motion: Results of the CMRxMotion challenge.

Deep learning models have achieved state-of-the-art performance in automated Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR) analysis. However, the efficacy of these models is highly dependent on the availability of high-quality, artifact-free images. In clinical practice, CMR acquisitions are frequently degraded by respiratory motion, yet the robustness of deep learning models against such artifacts remains an underexplored problem. To promote research in this domain, we organized the MICCAI CMRxMotion challenge. We curated and publicly released a dataset of 320 CMR cine series from 40 healthy volunteers wh

Upper-body free-breathing Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting applied to the quantification of water T1 and fat fraction.

Over the past decade, Magnetic Resonance Fingerprinting (MRF) has emerged as an efficient paradigm for the rapid and simultaneous quantification of multiple MRI parameters, including fat fraction (FF), water T1 (T1H2O), water T2 (T2H2O), and fat T1 (T1fat). These parameters serve as promising imaging biomarkers in various anatomical targets such as the heart, liver, and skeletal muscles. However, measuring these parameters in the upper body poses challenges due to physiological motion, particularly respiratory motion. In this work, we propose a novel approach, motion-corrected (MoCo) MRF T1-FF

Review of speckle tracking analysis to measure the size, shape, and contractility of the fetal heart in fetuses with congenital heart defects.

Evaluation of the fetal heart involves two approaches. The first describes a screening protocol in which the heart is imaged in transverse planes that includes the four-chamber view (4CV), left and right outflow tracts, and the 3-vessel-tracheal view. The second approach is a fetal echocardiogram that requires additional cardiac images as well as evaluating ventricular function using diagnostic tools such as M-mode and pulsed Doppler ultrasound. Speckle tracking analysis of the ventricular and atrial endocardium of the fetal heart has focused primarily on computing longitudinal global strain.

Pictorial Review of Mediastinal Masses with an Emphasis on Magnetic Resonance Imaging.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has become a crucial tool for evaluating mediastinal masses considering that several lesions that appear indeterminate on computed tomography and radiography can be differentiated on MRI. Using a three-compartment model to localize the mass and employing a basic knowledge of MRI, radiologists can easily diagnose mediastinal masses. Here, we review the use of MRI in evaluating mediastinal masses and present the images of various mediastinal masses categorized using the International Thymic Malignancy Interest Group's three-compartment classification system.
