Risk factors for 14-day rehospitalization following trauma with new traumatic spinal cord injury diagnosis: A 10-year nationwide study in Taiwan.

OBJECTIVES: Fourteen-day rehospitalization with new traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) diagnosis is used as an indicator for the diagnostic quality of the first hospitalization. In this nationwide population-based cohort study, we identified risk factors for this indicator. METHODS: We conducted a nested case-control study by using the data of patients who received a first hospitalization for trauma between 2001 and 2011. The data were retrieved from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database. Variables including demographic and trauma characteristics were compared between patients

National Trends and Predictors of Waiting Times for Cancer Surgery in the US.

IMPORTANCE: As cancer care becomes increasingly complex, patients may experience prolonged delays between diagnosis and definitive surgical management. While consolidation and expansion of health systems, along with centralization of care, may further amplify these delays, a comprehensive assessment of contemporary waiting times within cancer surgery care pathways in the US is lacking. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate national trends and predictors of delays from diagnosis to initiation of first-course therapy among patients ultimately undergoing cancer surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This

Telehealth utilization during the COVID-19 pandemic: comparing breast cancer survivors to non-cancer patients and implications for current practice.

BACKGROUND: During the 2019 coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, in-person medical visits changed due to social distancing guidelines. Breast cancer (BC) patients, needing ongoing treatment or surveillance, faced increased challenges in accessing care. Telehealth became essential for providing convenient and cost-effective care while minimizing COVID-19 transmission. BC survivors, however, often value in-person visits for clinical exams. This study aimed to compare telehealth participation between patients with a history of BC and women without cancer history. METHODS: Adults aged 18 and older, i

Surgical Outcomes After Bucket-Handle Meniscal Repairs: Analysis of a Large Contained Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Representing approximately 10% of all meniscal tears, bucket-handle meniscal tears (BHMTs) are large longitudinal vertical tears that have an attached fragment flipped into the intercondylar notch. Meniscectomy often results in significant meniscal loss and increased joint loading. Alternatively, meniscal repair attempts to restore the function of the meniscus and aims to preserve joint mechanics. PURPOSE: To evaluate the long-term risk of subsequent ipsilateral knee surgery in patients who underwent a bucket-handle meniscal repair (BHMR), and to assess risk factors associated wit

Social Determinants of Health and 30-Day Mortality After Inpatient Elective Surgery.

IMPORTANCE: Prior research conducted in private for-profit health care systems has suggested that social determinants of health (SDOH) play a role in adverse postoperative outcomes. Whether these findings translate to universal health care systems is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association of SDOH with risk of 30-day mortality after scheduled inpatient surgery. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cohort study was conducted in Ontario, Canada's most populous province. The cohort included consecutive adult patients (aged ≥18 years) who were eligible for Ontario's universal health i

Medicaid Expansion and Overall Mortality Among Individuals With Lung Cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in the United States, with outcomes disproportionately worse among uninsured and socioeconomically disadvantaged populations. The Affordable Care Act (ACA), through Medicaid expansion, sought to improve access to care, yet its long-term impact on lung cancer survival remains incompletely defined. The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between Medicaid expansion and overall mortality among adults with lung cancer and to examine whether these effects differed by race/ethnicity and lung cancer histology
