In another bracket: trans acceptance in lesbian utopia.

Better Than Chocolate investigates the inclusion of transgendered women in lesbian space. The film makes a strong statement that it is logical and natural to welcome trans women to the lesbian community, and that those who reject this inclusion are old-fashioned, violent, or both. It is my assertion that the film makes this statement at the expense of both those who have nuanced reservations toward trans inclusion and those transwomen who desire inclusion into lesbian communities but aren't hyperfeminine.

Interpersonal precipitants and suicide attempts in borderline personality disorder.

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is often characterized by multiple low lethality suicide attempts triggered by seemingly minor incidents, and less commonly by high lethality attempts that are attributed to impulsiveness or comorbid major depression. The relationships among life events, impulsiveness, and type of suicidal behavior has hardly been studied in BPD and mood disorders. This study compared depressed attempters with and without BPD to identify specific suicide precipitants and risk factors in BPD and their relationship to severity of suicidal behavior. Attempters with comorbid B

Cognitive and partner-related factors in rapid ejaculation: differences between dysfunctional and functional men.

Despite the high prevalence of rapid ejaculation in community samples, there is still a paucity of data on cognitive and other relevant aspects of the subjective experience of premature ejaculation (PE) patients and their functional counterparts. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to expand our understanding of the complex nature of rapid ejaculation disorders by providing a detailed characterization of ejaculatory patterns, behavioral aspects, cognitive, and partner-related factors in a sample of unselected PE patients compared to a group of functional men. To explore the areas that mi

Understanding the new context of the male sex work industry.

BACKGROUND: The most frequent cause of accidental household death in children under 6 years of age is inhalation of a foreign body. Delayed management is blamed for death. The absence of a recognizable penetration syndrome complicates and delays not only the diagnosis but also the treatment of foreign body inhalation. OBJECTIVE: This report aimed to highlight the problem of radiopaque foreign body inhalation and analyze part of our experience in the treatment of such cases. METHODS: A multicenter experience in the management of radiopaque inhaled foreign bodies in 3 centers in Egypt and Saud

Parents helping parents: does this psychological mechanism work when the child is affected by a high risk disease?

Mutual help relationships are very important among families with children affected by serious diseases. Discussing common problems and experiences can provide the stimulus for developing the coping strategies that are needed to face new situations. This can thus be done with an outlook that nurtures subsequent adjustment and restoration of a good quality of life after diagnosis and the start of therapy. However, when parents are faced with the ordeal of a child affected by a high risk disease, this interaction may have detrimental effects. Through our observations of the behavior and relations

Hostility, anger, aggressiveness, and coronary heart disease: an interpersonal perspective on personality, emotion, and health.

The related traits of hostility, anger, and aggressiveness have long been suggested as risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD). Our prior review of this literature (Smith, 1992) found both considerable evidence in support of this hypothesis and important limitations that precluded firm conclusions. In the present review, we discuss recent research on the assessment of these traits, their association with CHD and longevity, and mechanisms possibly underlying the association. In doing so, we illustrate the value of the interpersonal tradition in personality psychology (Sullivan, 1953; Lear

Negative feelings exacerbate hostile attributions of intent in highly aggressive boys.

Tested the hypothesis that aggressive boys' tendency to attribute hostile intentions to peers is exacerbated in a negative emotional state. Twenty-nine highly aggressive boys in special education, 12 moderately aggressive boys in regular education, and 16 nonaggressive boys in regular education inferred peers' intentions in 8 vignettes concerning ambiguous provocation by peers. Mild negative emotions were induced by unjust loss of a manipulated computer game. Half the vignettes were completed in this negative emotional state. After completion of all vignettes, the game was played again and won

Can questionnaire reports correctly classify relationship distress and partner physical abuse?

Relationship adjustment (e.g., Dyadic Adjustment Scale; DAS) and physical aggression (e.g., Conflict Tactics Scale) measures are used both as screening tools and as the sole criterion for classification. This study created face valid diagnostic interviews for relationship distress and physical abuse, through which one could compare preliminarily the classification properties of questionnaire reports. The DAS (and a global measure of relationship satisfaction) had modest agreement with a structured diagnostic interview; both questionnaires tended to overdiagnose distress compared with the inter

Interpersonal therapy for bulimia nervosa.

Interpersonal therapy (IPT) has been identified as an effective treatment for bulimia nervosa that does not focus on bulimic symptoms. Rather, a detailed assessment culminating in an "interpersonal inventory" identifies core associated interpersonal problem(s) that become the focus of treatment. For that reason, IPT may be particularly helpful for clients who have become "stuck" in their eating disorder for reasons associated with problematic relationships. IPT is also helpful for clients who may benefit from a therapy that offers some structure, focus, and containment without clear behavioral

Improving the rate of classification of patients with the multidimensional pain inventory (MPI): clarifying the meaning of "significant other".

OBJECTIVE: The Multidimensional Pain Inventory (MPI) has been used widely to assess the psychosocial adaptation in chronic pain patients. The MPI can also be used to classify patients into one of three primary subgroups. However, studies have reported that anywhere from 3% to 30% of patients are unclassifiable, mostly attributable to an excessive number of missing responses to questions. The purpose of this study was to examine the reasons for the large number of missing responses and subsequently to reduce the number of patients who cannot be classified within one of the three primary MPI sub

"When you carry condoms all the boys think you want it": negotiating competing discourses about safe sex.

With the advent of HIV, sexual health campaigns and formal sex education in schools have worked to instil the concept of safe sex into the collective minds of Australia's youth. However the concept in its present guise is a fairly limited one. We argue in this paper that the predominant emphasis in education programmes on safe sex as condom use may be counter-productive for some young heterosexuals for two reasons. First, this strategy is male-focused and may not extrapolate well to young women who face special risks around pregnancy and rigid societal gender norms which govern sexual behaviou

[State of bullying in a geriatric hospital].

Recently, reports of bullying and beatings among school children has brought these problems to the public attention. Unfortunately similar problems exist among the aged and institutionalized patients in geriatric hospitals, e.g., covert teasing and bullying of the weak. Therefore, the present status of bullying or being bullied in our geriatric hospital was analyzed and their backgrounds studied to develop clinical countermeasures against bullying. Results of this study were as follows; 1. Nineteen percent of patients were victims of bullying, and patients who had performed the bullying were 3

A multimodal analysis of personal negativity.

This study examined how unhappiness and self-dissatisfaction are related to behavior, self-perception, social reputation, and the way one is treated by others. Varying in personal negativity (PN)--a composite of unhappiness, dissatisfaction with life, low self-esteem, and nonclinical depression--146 undergraduates (82 women and 64 men) engaged in 3 interactions. Participants' behavior and the behavior of their interaction partners was coded from videotapes. Personality ratings were obtained from participants and from 2 close acquaintances. PN was closely associated with maladaptive social inte

The ability of children with specific language impairment to access and participate in an ongoing interaction.

This study investigated the ability of 6 children with specific language impairment (SLI), ages 8;10 to 12;5 (years; months), to enter and participate in an ongoing dyadic interaction. Performance was compared to that of 6 chronological age-matched (CA) peers and 6 language-similar (LS) peers. All children in the LS and CA groups successfully accessed the interaction, and most did so quickly. Two children from the SLI group did not access, and the 4 remaining subjects required varying amounts of time to access. Following successful access, the triadic interactions of subjects were examined. Th

Donor insemination programmes with personal donors: issues of secrecy.

This study involved 46 recipients and donors in personal donor programmes interviewed anonymously by postal questionnaire and interview: 38% (30/80) of possible recipients responded. The total number of people told about the donor involvement ranged between two and 78, with no significant gender difference. Relationships had changed for half of the participants in the programmes with 75% reporting that they had developed a closer relationship and 25% reporting a deterioration. Contact between couples and donors was seen as being in the original role of family friend or relative rather than as

Cynical hostility and cardiovascular reactivity during self-disclosure.

Recent research suggests that hostility might contribute to the development of coronary heart disease (CHD) and other illnesses. One potential mechanism linking hostility and health is exaggerated physiological reactivity to social stressors. Given that mistrust and suspiciousness are closely related to this trait, the self-disclosure of personal information regarding a stressful experience may elicit heightened reactivity in hostile persons. To evaluate this hypothesis, undergraduate men (N = 60) classified as high or low on the Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale were randomly assigned to e

Alcohol and premarital aggression among newlywed couples.

The present study examined the relationship between husband and wife alcohol use and premarital aggression, and evaluated a social learning model of alcohol and aggression that posited a moderating role for alcohol beliefs and aggressive motivations. Couples (age 18 to 29) entering their first marriage were approached after they had applied for a marriage license and interviewed concerning demographic factors and premarital aggression. These couples were recruited for the longitudinal study and given questionnaires assessing hostility, marital dissatisfaction, alcohol use and alcohol beliefs.

Cognitive, behavioral, and affective correlates of the Cook and Medley Hostility Scale.

The Cook and Medley Hostility (Ho) Scale is an increasingly important measure in studies examining health consequences of hostility. The two studies discussed herein provide further evidence of the construct validity of this measure. In Study 1, high Ho scores were associated with a greater level of aroused anger and disparaging appraisals of subjects' partners in a competitive reaction-time game as well as marginally more frequent antagonistic behavior. In Study 2, high Ho scores were associated with greater levels of angry and suspicious thoughts and feelings in response to hypothetical inte
