Isolated allergy to the common housefly (Musca domestica) has only been described in four cases. Predisposing factors include high concentrations of allergens and prolonged exposure time. Two pharmaceutical industry workers, 59 and 34 years of age, both without atopy, presented with recent onset of allergic rhinitis. Their symptoms appeared about 30 minutes after exposure to Musca domestica in the closed breeding rooms. They were symptom-free with other insects, on weekends and on vacation. Fifty unselected subjects living in Alpes-Maritimes, France, a high risk area for visceral leishmaniasis due to Leishmania infantum, were examined simultaneously by the leishmanin skin test and the Western blot technique in 1993; 32% and 38%, respectively, gave a positive reaction. The concordance of the 2 methods was 82%. Thus, in this high risk area, a large proportion of inhabitants had been exposed to the parasite. The use of these 2 tests should permit the detection of potential cases of reactivated leishmaniasis in prospective follow-up investigations.

We studied the cytokine profiles and cellular compositions in the lesions of borderline lepromatous (BL) and borderline tuberculoid (BT) leprosy patients in order to ascertain the immunological distinctions between these two groups. A study of some immunologic in vitro and in vivo changes during the course of chemotherapy in 17 cases of advanced Hodgkin's disease was made. Skin testing with PPD, candida albicans and streptodornase antigens was studied together with studies of B and T cell numbers in the blood and responses to migration inhibition testing for PPD and PHA. An excellent correlation was found between recovery of normal immunologic responses and clinical remission despite the use of immunosuppressive chemotherapy.
