Female breast cancer is one of the major causes of death among women while male breast cancer is relatively uncommon and accounts for about 1% of all breast cancers in both sexes. CASE REPORT: A 70-year-old man who was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the left lower gingiva underwent segmental mandibulectomy for tumor ablation and reconstruction with a scapular bone flap. To augment bone height of this flap, vertical distraction osteogenesis was performed. For this article, 178 consecutive cases of mandibular reconstruction using microvascular free flaps and performed from 1979 to 1997 were studied. The purpose of this report is to compare flap success rates, complications, and aesthetic and functional results. The role of a hospital-based implant center with dental and medical specialists working as a team is discussed. Advantages to the team include the availability of sophisticated hospital equipment and facilities. Referring dentists are encouraged to participate in and/or observe treatment performed at the implant center. Four cases treated by an implant team within a hospital environment are presented.

Immediate A-O plate mandibular reconstruction was used in 31 patients, following the excision of malignant disease. This five-year retrospective study shows that 48% (15/31) of the patients are living (one with recurrence), with a mean follow-up of 30 months (range nine to 60 months). The mean survival of the deceased patients was 11 months (range two weeks to 46 months). Postoperative complications are evaluated with respect to the mandibular defect, radiation status, dentition, adjuvant onlay bone grafting and T stage. This study aimed to examine the contributions of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) at the injury site toward neuroma formation and nerve regeneration after inferior alveolar nerve transection.
