Trauma whole-body MDCT: an assessment of image quality in conventional dual-phase and modified biphasic injection.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the image quality of conventional arterial and portal venous (PV) phase multidetector CT (MDCT) with two biphasic injection protocols in polytrauma patients. METHODS: 60 consecutive patients with polytrauma underwent body 256-slice MDCT with a conventional protocol or 1 of 2 single-pass biphasic protocols: Group A, arterial (30 s) and PV (60 s) phase acquisitions; Group B, "biphasic" contrast injection with a single acquisition at 60 s; and Group C, "modified biphasic" injection with a single acquisition at a 70-s delay. Images were analyzed for arterial, venous and pare

[Interrelationship wisdom teeth dystopia and internal TMJ disorders: a clinical case].

The patient with painful restriction of jaw movements showed CT and MRI of TMJ signs of on-reducing disk displacement of the right TMJ and secondary arthrosis. Signs of occlusion obstacle and compression of the right TMJ structures have been revealed by studying of diagnostic models, MPI, investigation of TMJ with KAVO Arcus Digma II system. The etiological factor proved to be th dystopia of 4.8. Complete recovery of the TMJ function has been noted after removal of tooth 4.8. CT and MRI of TMJ, investigation of occlusion are indicated for patients with non-reducing disk displacement of TMJ. Ma

Intraoperative ultrasound for liver tumor resection in children.

BACKGROUND: Primary hepatic neoplasms in children are rare tumors. All malignant and medically refractive benign primary pediatric liver tumors ultimately require surgical resection for cure. Accurate preoperative imaging including multidetector helical computerized tomography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is necessary to determine resectability. In the literature intraoperative ultrasound (IOUS) has proven to be a vital adjunct to liver surgery in adults, but this is not well established in children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between April 2003 and November 2014, children (<18-y-old) with

MDCT and MRI of the ampulla of Vater. Part II: non-epithelial neoplasms, benign ampullary disorders, and pitfalls.

The purpose of this two-part article is to review the cross-sectional imaging features of benign and malignant ampullary conditions with endoscopic and histopathologic correlation and to present the most common pitfalls in the evaluation of the ampulla. In this part, we will review the mesenchymal and secondary neoplasms of the ampulla, a vast array of benign ampullary conditions, causes of bulging papilla, and pitfalls. Familiarity with ampullary pathologic conditions and pitfalls, as well as the use of optimized MDCT and MRI techniques, may improve the diagnostic accuracy of radiologists fac

Evaluation of the magnitude and location of Cam deformity using three dimensional CT analysis.

The cam-type deformity in femoroacetabular impingement is a 3D deformity. Single measurements using radiographs, CT or MRI may not provide a true estimate of the magnitude of the deformity. We performed an analysis of the size and location of measurements of the alpha angle (α°) using a CT technique which could be applied to the 3D reconstructions of the hip. Analysis was undertaken in 42 patients (57 hips; 24 men and 18 women; mean age 38 years (16 to 58)) who had symptoms of femoroacetabular impingement related to a cam-type abnormality. An α° of > 50° was considered a significant indicator

Whole-brain 320-detector row dynamic volume CT perfusion detected crossed cerebellar diaschisis after spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the value of 320-detector row CT used to detect crossed cerebellar diaschisis (CCD) in patients with unilateral supratentorial spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH). METHODS: We investigated 62 of 156 patients with unilateral supratentorial SICH using 320-detector row CT scanning. Regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF), cerebral blood volume (rCBV), mean transit time (rMTT), and time to peak (rTTP) levels were measured in different regions of interest (ROIs) that were manually outlined on computed tomography perfusion (CTP) for the ce

Air trapping and airflow obstruction in newborn cystic fibrosis piglets.

RATIONALE: Air trapping and airflow obstruction are being increasingly identified in infants with cystic fibrosis. These findings are commonly attributed to airway infection, inflammation, and mucus buildup. OBJECTIVES: To learn if air trapping and airflow obstruction are present before the onset of airway infection and inflammation in cystic fibrosis. METHODS: On the day they are born, piglets with cystic fibrosis lack airway infection and inflammation. Therefore, we used newborn wild-type piglets and piglets with cystic fibrosis to assess air trapping, airway size, and lung volume with ins

Three-dimensional CT imaging in pediatric calvarial pathologies.

In children with suspected cranial pathologies, three-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) imaging is superior to other modalities. It can help differentiate actual pathology from normal or variant appearances. Sutures and fontanelles, synostosis, abnormalities of head shape without craniosynostosis, congenital calvarial defects, cranial fractures, bone tumors, and postoperative cranial vault can be assessed easily with 3D CT imaging. We aimed to discuss the common normal, variant, and pathological findings that 3D CT imaging can aid to diagnose as well as explain the usefulness of 3D CT

Pneumosinus dilatans multiplex associated with hormonal imbalance.

Pneumosinus dilatans describes an abnormal dilation of one or more paranasal sinuses without radiological evidence of localised bone destruction, hyperostosis or mucous membrane thickening. Dilation of mastoid air cells also occurs rarely along with involvement of paranasal sinuses. This rare combination of unknown aetiology was reported in two cases in the literature and termed 'Pneumosinus Dilatans Multiplex' (PSDM). It is usually asymptomatic, and is detected incidentally on plain radiography, CT or MRI. If left untreated, it can further erode the bone leading to complications such as facia

Multidetector CT and histological features of benign mesenchymoma of the infratemporal space: a rare case report.

Benign mesenchymoma is a soft tissue neoplasm composed of an admixture of two or more benign mesenchymal components in addition to fibrous tissue. A rare case of benign mesenchymoma of the infratemporal space in a 14-year-old boy is presented. In this case report we discuss the salient imaging and histopathological features of this rare entity.

Successful coronary stenting in anomalous right coronary artery by using an inner catheter with mother and child technique under multislice CT guidance.

The ectopic location and unusual coronary course of the anomalous right coronary artery (RCA) from the left sinus of Valsalva makes percutaneous coronary intervention difficult. In this report, we describe a case of successful stent implantation in an anomalous RCA performed using a 4.5F inner catheter with a 6F guiding catheter used in the mother and child system under the guidance of multislice computed tomography. This approach was found to be safe and feasible in cases involving anomalous coronary origin because of the excellent engagement and support provided by the guiding catheter.

Perforation of the right ventricle during cardiac resynchronisation therapy upgrade not related to a coexisting persistent left superior vena cava.

Right ventricle (RV) perforation is a complication that may arise during device implants. We present the case of a patient undergoing cardiac resynchronisation therapy upgrade that was complicated with an RV perforation. The lead was successfully repositioned with a good final outcome. Despite being uncommon, persistence of the left superior vena cava is the most frequent venous cardiac anomaly and may pose challenges during the implant procedure, namely when the right superior vena cava (RSVC) is absent. Still, in this patient it was not related to the event, as the leads were advanced throug

Association of deep vein thrombosis type with clinical phenotype of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension.

BACKGROUND: Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) has been considered to be caused by single or recurrent pulmonary embolism (PE) arising from deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In Japan, female predominance and association of HLA-B*5201 with CTEPH unrelated to DVT were reported. In acute PE residual proximal DVT is associated with larger obstruction of pulmonary arteries. However, it remains uncertain whether DVT and the type of DVT are associated with clinical phenotype of CTEPH. PURPOSE: To clarify the association of DVT and DVT type with clinical phenotype of CTEPH. METHODS: Amo
