Contractures evoked by 0.1 mmol/l acetylcholine (ACh) in bundles from mouse soleus muscles denervated for 3-7 days were partly inhibited for more than 1 h following 2- to 10-min exposure to 10-100 mumol/l chlorpromazine (CP). The effect was stronger in sucrose than in Na+ solutions. A prolonged ACh-contracture blockage by diltiazem (20 mumol/l) was found only in the sucrose solution. Membrane currents evoked by ACh in the absence of Na+ were blocked by both the drugs, but recovered to more than 60% within 1 min of drug washout. ACh-evoked retention of tracer 45Ca2+ was decreased by more than 9

Two infants, delivered uneventfully, later developed right brachial plexus palsy secondary to pyogenic osteomyelitis and arthritis of the right shoulder joint. Weakness of right arms occurred at the sixth and tenth days of age respectively. Both had right arm tenderness on palpation and passive movement. Roentgenograms of their right shoulder joints showed irregular radiolucency of the proximal margin of right humerus head. In both cases, electromyography revealed various degrees of significant denervation pattern for the C5-C7 innervated muscles. Pus culture from right shoulder joints grew St

The results of a retrospective study of 23 goat kids with delayed swayback are reported. Principal clinical signs were ataxia, loss of postural control, spasticity of the hindlimbs, and muscular weakness, often progressing to permanent recumbency. Denervation of skeletal muscles was demonstrated by electromyography in 2 kids. Three kids slowly recovered during hospitalisation. Histopathological changes were characterized by degeneration of selected neuronal populations with their processes within the central and the peripheral nervous system. Affected systems included upper motor neuron, vesti

1. The effects of aspirin, paracetamol and benorylate were studied on gastric mucosal blood flow (MBF) and acid secretion in canine denervated gastric pouches. 2. Aspirin 20 mM in the unstimulated pouch had no effect; pentagastrin-stimulated acid output, but not MBF, was reduced. Aspirin buffered to pH 6 was ineffective. 3. Aspirin 3-50 mg/kg reaching the pentagastrin-stimulated pouch through the blood, increased acid secretion and MBF, but the MBF:secretion ratio was variably affected. 4. Paracetamol (10 or 20 mg/kg i.v., or 20 mM in the pouch) or benorylate (280 mg/kg orally) mainly had litt

Due to the impact that frailty and cardiac aging have on society and health systems, the mechanisms surrounding these conditions must be known. If the frailty and cardiovascular complications are due to numerous controllable factors or not, different strategies must be considered to improve the elderly patient's prognosis and improve their quality of life. This review aimed to investigate the main shared mechanisms of cardiac aging and frailty. MEDLINE-PubMed, Cohrane and EMBASE databases were searched to perform this review. The mesh-terms used for this search was frailty, cardiovascular dise

Hemifacial spasm (HFS), or facial hemispasm, is a paroxysmal hyperkinetic disorder involving muscles innervated by the facial nerve, mainly on the one hand. The development of HFS is based on neurovascular conflict. However, it is impossible to explain the clinical manifestations of HFS only by nerve compression. Both peripheral and central mechanisms are involved in the generation of HFS, with the formation of ephaptic transmission, antidromic excitation, primary or secondary hyper-excitability of the nuclear and supranuclear level of innervation. Two treatment methods are pathogenetically ju

AIMS: To determine the contribution of the striated musculature anatomically related to the urethra on urinary continence in conscious male rats. We tested whether the bilateral neurectomy of the motor branch of the sacral plexus (MBSP), a nerve that innervates the bulbospongiosus, ischiocavernosus, and external urethral sphincter, is a reliable procedure to induce changes in voiding pattern that can be used as indicators of urinary incontinence in unanesthetized male rats.
METHODS: Micturition behavior was videotaped and urinary parameters measured 24 h before and at day 2 and 10 after surge

The outcome of peripheral nerve injuries requiring surgical repair is poor. Recent work has suggested that electrical stimulation (ES) of denervated muscles could be beneficial. Here we tested whether ES has a positive influence on functional recovery after injury and surgical repair of the facial nerve. Outcomes at 2 months were compared to animals receiving sham stimulation (SS). Starting on the first day after end-to-end suture (facial-facial anastomosis), electrical stimulation (square 0.1 ms pulses at 5 Hz at an ex tempore established threshold amplitude of between 3.0 and 5.0V) was deliv

OBJECT: In an attempt to improve peripheral nerve repair, the influence of the addition of reverse end-to-side neurorrhaphy for an injured peripheral nerve was investigated in the rat sciatic nerve transection model.
METHODS: Twelve Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into two groups (six rats in each group). In Group I, the right sciatic nerve was cut at a point distal to the gluteal notch and repaired using end-to-end neurorrhaphy with four 10-0 nylon epineurial sutures. In Group II, after performing the same procedure as in Group I, the left sciatic nerve was cut distally and passed through a

STUDY DESIGN: We report on a 46-year-old man with atlantoaxial rotatory subluxation and cranio-cervical osseous fusion secondary to cervical dystonia (CD) and concomitant ankylosing spondylitis (AS).
OBJECTIVE: To describe treatment of CD under these unusual circumstances.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: CD may cause several complications due to enhanced spinal degeneration. Primary and secondary nonresponders to conservative treatment may benefit from neurosurgical procedures including denervation procedures or functional stereotactic neurosurgery. However, if spinal fixation has occurred, usua

The functional status of vestibulo-collic reflexes in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles was investigated in 24 patients with spasmodic torticollis using small, abrupt 'drops' of the head. None had been treated with botulinum toxin injections during at least 4 months preceding the study. Eight of the patients, four of whom had been studied before surgery, were also studied after selective peripheral denervation of neck muscles. The reflex was of normal latency and duration in the 'passive drop' condition, in which subjects were instructed not to oppose the fall of the head. To study volunta

AIM: To study the promoting activity of 2.5 s murine nerve growth factor (NGF) for the regeneration of injuried sciatic nerve.
METHODS: The sciatic nerves of mice and rats were crushed. The axon counts and differential axon counts were made. Evoked potential latency (NMEPL) was recorded at sites of proximal (Pro) and distal (Dis) segment of soleus muscles.
RESULTS: In mice, NGF im 0.5-1 kBU.kg-1 increased the axon counts of regenerated nerves 20 d after crush; 2-4 kBU.kg-1 simultaneously alleviated the denervated atrophy of soleus muscles. In rats, NGF i.m. increased the axon counts at dose

The neuromuscular blocking actions of commercial and pure paraquat on the mouse phrenic nerve-diaphragm were compared. Twitch responses of mouse diaphragm to nerve stimulation were inhibited by commercial paraquat (5-500 microM), but not by pure paraquat (1 mM). At concentrations greater than 30 microM, commercial paraquat also directly inhibited the contractions induced by electrical stimulation of the muscle. The inhibitory actions of commercial paraquat on twitches were potentiated by pretreatment with either 0.7 microM d-tubocurarine or 2.2 microM succinylcholine. Moreover, commercial para

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an important electron carrier and antioxidant. The COQ7 enzyme catalyzes the hydroxylation of 5-demethoxyubiquinone-10 (DMQ10), the second-to-last step in the CoQ10 biosynthesis pathway. We report a consanguineous family presenting with a hereditary motor neuropathy associated with a homozygous c.1A > G p.? variant of COQ7 with abnormal CoQ10 biosynthesis.
METHODS: Affected family members underwent clinical assessments that included nerve conduction testing, histologic analysis, and MRI. Pathogenicity of the COQ7 variant was assessed in cultu

BACKGROUND: In this study, we investigated sensory and motor outcomes for different bridging techniques for short nerve gaps.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was conducted in the Postdoctoral Department of Burns, Plastic, and Reconstructive Surgery of our institution from August 2014 to May 2017. All patients with posttraumatic short nerve gaps of 3 cm or less of median, ulnar, and/or both in forearm and wrists were included in the study. Patients with known causes of neuropathies were excluded. Groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 included 9 patients each, and the nerve gap was managed with reverse sural

BACKGROUND: Shoulder dysfunction is common in persons with spinal cord injury (SCI) with an incidence of up to 63%. Dysfunction is a result of muscle imbalances, specifically denervated rotator cuff muscles that are repetitively used during manual wheelchair propulsion.
OBJECTIVE: To determine which arm stroke technique, pump (P) or semicircular (SC), is most energy efficient for long periods of propulsion.
DESIGN: A randomized study with repeated measures observations.
SETTING: The study was performed at an institutional gait analysis laboratory.
PARTICIPANTS: 18 able-bodied (AB) male par
