BACKGROUND: Nematodes of the genus Dirofilaria are widespread vector-borne helminths (VBH) of veterinary relevance. Dirofilariosis caused by D. immitis is frequently diagnosed in dogs often showing a severe clinical condition known as heartworm disease. Assessing the distribution pattern of canine dirofilariosis is pivotal to undertake appropriate control measures and define the risk of infection in animals and humans. This study provides original data on the occurrence of D. immitis in naive stray dogs from Nepal.
METHODS: An epidemiological study was performed on stray dogs from Siddharthan

Constructed wetlands (CW) are an attractive technology due to their operational simplicity and low life-cycle cost. It has been applied for refinery effluent treatment but mostly single-stage designs (e.g., vertical or horizontal flow) have been tested. However, to achieve a good treatment efficiency for industrial effluents, different treatment conditions (both aerobic and anaerobic) are needed. This means that hybrid CW systems are typically required with a respectively increased area demand. In addition, a strong aerobic environment that facilitates the formation of iron, manganese, zinc an

Brucella spp. are facultative intracellular pathogens that cause chronic brucellosis in humans and animals. The virulence of Brucella primarily depends on its successful survival and replication in host cells. During invasion of the host tissue, Brucella is simultaneously subjected to a variety of harsh conditions, including nutrient limitation, low pH, antimicrobial defenses, and extreme levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the host immune response. This suggests that Brucella may be able to regulate its metabolic adaptation in response to the distinct stresses encountered during its i

In vitro estrogenicity screens are believed to provide a first prioritization step in hazard characterization of endocrine disrupting chemicals. When applied to complex environmental matrices or mixture samples, they have been indicated valuable in estimating the overall estrogen-mimicking load. In this study, the performance of an adapted format of the classical E-screen or MCF-7 cell proliferation assay was profoundly evaluated to rank pure compounds as well as influents and effluents of sewage treatment plants (STPs) according to estrogenic activity. In this adapted format, flow cytometric

AIM: Nitric oxide (NO), synthesized from l-arginine by NO synthases, plays a role in adaptation to physical exercise by modulating blood flow, muscular contraction and glucose uptake and in the control of cellular respiration. Recent studies show that NO can be formed in vivo also from the reduction of inorganic nitrate (NO(3) (-)) and nitrite (NO(2) (-)). The diet constitutes a major source of nitrate, and vegetables are particularly rich in this anion. The aim of this study was to investigate if dietary nitrate had any effect on metabolic and circulatory parameters during exercise.

It is not surprising that cardiovascular diseases such as congestive heart failure and coronary insufficiency can give rise to varying degrees of sleep impairment; it is less readily appreciated that certain physiologic events occurring during sleep-as well as long-term unsatisfactory sleep-may cause or increase the risk of cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, stroke, and cardiac arrythmias. Heart rate abnormalities during sleep in normotensive subjects predict later cardiovascular disease, and their early identification alerts the physician to undertake preventive

The pharmacological effects of hydroxamic acids are partially attributed to their ability to serve as HNO and/or NO donors under oxidative stress. Previously, it was concluded that oxidation of the histone deacetylase inhibitor suberoylanilide hydroxamic acid (SAHA) by the metmyoglobin/H2O2 reaction system releases NO, which was based on spin trapping of NO and accumulation of nitrite. Reinvestigation of this system demonstrates the accumulation of N2O, which is a marker of HNO formation, at similar rates under normoxia and anoxia. In addition, the yields of nitrite that accumulated in the abs

Atm gene-disrupted mice recapitulate the majority of characteristics observed in patients with the genetic disorder ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T). However, although they exhibit defects in neuromotor function and a distinct neurological phenotype, they do not show the progressive neurodegeneration seen in human patients, but there is evidence that ataxia-telangiectasia mutated (Atm)-deficient animals have elevated levels of oxidized macromolecules and some neuropathology. We report here that in vitro survival of cerebellar Purkinje cells from both Atm "knock-out" and Atm "knock-in" mice was sign

Using a novel cysteine thiol labeling strategy coupled with mass spectrometric analysis, we identified and quantified the changes in global reversible cysteine oxidation of proteins in the left ventricle of hearts from mice with metabolic syndrome-associated diastolic dysfunction. This phenotype was induced by feeding a high-fat, high-sucrose, type-2 diabetogenic diet to C57BL/6J mice for 8 mo. The extent of reversible thiol oxidation in relationship to the total available (free and reducible) level of each cysteine could be confidently determined for 173 proteins, of which 98 contained cystei

Under the context of climate change, the risks posed by emerging combined pollution to food security, particularly the accumulation and toxicity of contaminants in the edible parts of crops, remain poorly understood. This study investigated the individual and combined effects of freeze-thaw cycles (FTC) and the flame retardant tributyl phosphate (TBP) on rye growth, physiology, rhizosphere microbiome, quality, and grain accumulation through short-term hydroponic and long-term soil cultivation experiments. The results showed that combined FTC and TBP stress exerted a significant synergistic tox

INTRODUCTION: Soil microorganisms regulate plant nutrition through nutrient transformation, and forest soil microbial biomass is crucial for ecosystem health and nutrient cycling. Tropical coastal shelterbelts are essential for coastal ecological security, but seasonal microbial biomass variation and environmental controls in forests remain insufficiently understood.
METHODS: To determine how soil microbial biomass changes seasonally in tropical coastal shelterbelts and which environmental factors regulate this variation, four representative shelterbelt types in Wenchang, Hainan, were examine

Plant biostimulants have emerged as transformative and sustainable tools for improving crop productivity, resource-use efficiency, and resilience under rapidly intensifying environmental stresses. Unlike conventional agrochemicals, biostimulants function by activating physiological, biochemical, and molecular processes that optimize plant performance without directly supplying nutrients or exerting pesticidal effects. This review comprehensively examines the integrated roles of plant-derived and microbial biostimulants in sustainable agriculture, with particular emphasis on microbial-mediated

Sustainable bioprocesses for selenite [Se(IV)] remediation and selenium (Se) recovery are constrained by the limited tolerance of most reported microorganisms for elevated Se(IV) concentrations. Here, we identified Paenibacillus polymyxa P10, isolated from estuarine sediment, as a highly tolerant and efficient Se(IV)-reducing bacterium. Strain P10 completely reduced 5 mM Se(IV) to Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) within 48 h and retained measurable Se(IV)-reducing activity up to 1,000 mM Se(IV). It also maintained activity over a wide range of pH (5-10), temperature (20-45°C), and salinity (1%-3.5%) c

Frequently abrupt temperature shifts driven by global climate change significantly disrupt carbon sequestration and CO2 emissions in wetland ecosystems. The condition has raised an important question to clarify ambiguity in the regulatory mechanism of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from some of the world's ecologically important large river floodplain wetland systems. This study investigated how abrupt temperature changes could modulate GHG emissions from surface sediments of the China's Yangtze River floodplain wetlands (YRW). A microcosm experiment was conducted in YRW with four temperature

The discharge of dye-laden effluents from textile industries poses serious environmental and health risks, necessitating the development of efficient and sustainable adsorbents. In this study, a novel bio-based composite adsorbent (SPCA) was rationally designed and fabricated via the valorization of Opuntia dillenii-derived pectin combined with sodium alginate, chitosan, activated carbon, and eco-friendly additives. The composite was synthesized under mild conditions through dual crosslinking, involving Zn2+-mediated ionic coordination and glutaraldehyde-induced covalent bonding, while sodium

Temperate forests are key terrestrial carbon sinks, yet their capacity to sequester carbon is often limited by nitrogen (N), a nutrient whose availability is declining in many ecosystems. Among factors contributing to declining N availability, climate-driven changes in soil hydrology could force N loss via the emission of both nitric oxide (NO) and nitrous oxide (N2O); however, forecasting these losses is challenging because they are regulated by soil moisture, a factor that regulates microbial activity and substrate availability but varies significantly across space and time. Here, we ask: ho
