Production of granular activated carbon from food-processing wastes (walnut shells and jujube seeds) and its adsorptive properties.

Commercial activated carbon is a highly effective absorbent that can be used to remove micropollutants from water. As a result, the demand for activated carbon is increasing. In this study, we investigated the optimum manufacturing conditions for producing activated carbon from ligneous wastes generated from food processing. Jujube seeds and walnut shells were selected as raw materials. Carbonization and steam activation were performed in a fixed-bed laboratory electric furnace. To obtain the highest iodine number, the optimum conditions for producing activated carbon from jujube seeds and wal

Divergent immuno-landscapes: comparing the tumor microenvironment of Indian and Western HNSCC patients.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly dynamic and heterogeneous cancer where the tumor microenvironment (TME) and immune landscape differ across populations. Western groups often show an "immune-hot" profile with infiltration by various immune cells, including cytotoxic CD8+ T cells, helper CD4+ T cells, and regulatory T cells. In contrast, Indian groups frequently display an inflammation-rich yet immunosuppressive microenvironment dominated by myeloid cells. The Asian population, particularly Indian patients, often exhibits distinct immune subtypes influenced by region-spe

Decoding the role of non-coding RNAs in HNSCC radioresistance: molecular mechanisms and clinical implications.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) are the sixth most commonly diagnosed cancer globally, with a stagnant five-year survival rate of approximately 50%. Risk factors include human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, smoking, alcohol consumption, and betel nut chewing, contributing to its genetic and molecular heterogeneity. Although radiotherapy is a primary treatment modality for locally advanced or inoperable HNSCC, the inherent radioresistance of tumor tissues limits its effectiveness, emphasizing the need for strategies to enhance radiosensitivity. Emerging evidence highlights the c

Divergence of environmental filtering: rock exposure rate filters reproductive traits whereas slope shape community richness.

INTRODUCTION: Environmental filtering is a core mechanism driving plant functional trait reassembly and community succession. However, it is often treated as a uniform process, and whether distinct abiotic factors act through divergent mechanisms remains poorly understood. METHODS: We quantified reproductive traits (fruit types and seed dispersal modes), environmental gradients, and community attributes across plots in a typical resource-limited ecosystem characterized by intensified environmental filtering. Using an integrated framework that combined correlation screening, mediation analysis

Oral Microbiome-Mediated Carcinogenesis in Oral Cavity Cancer: A Narrative Review.

The global impact of oral cavity cancer (OCC) is substantial, given its five-year survival rate of nearly 50%. Tobacco, alcohol, and betel nut consumption are primary risk factors, but OCC can also develop in individuals without these exposures. Recent studies increasingly indicate that the oral microbiome may contribute to the pathogenesis of OCC, especially in the context of poor oral hygiene and periodontal disease. The oral microbiome consists of hundreds of bacterial and fungal species, influenced by factors such as smoking, alcohol, diet, and medications. Smoking disrupts microbial balan

Effect of Clamped Member Material and Thickness on Bolt Self-Loosening Under Transverse Loads.

Bolted joints, prevalent in industrial applications for component fastening, are susceptible to self-loosening-a critical issue resulting in a gradual reduction in clamping force. Gaining insight into the underlying mechanisms of self-loosening is crucial. While prior research has largely focused on evaluating component stiffness, limited attention has been given to its impact on the self-loosening behavior of bolted joints under transverse cyclic loading. This study investigates how component stiffness influences self-loosening in bolted joints by varying the material and thickness of clamped

A population-based study of incidence trends of head and neck epithelial cancers in northeastern Spain, 1994-2018.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) is the seventh most common cancer worldwide. Incidence rates of these tumors vary between countries and change over time depending on the prevalence of risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol consumption, betel nut chewing habits or human papillomavirus infection. This makes it necessary to periodically study HNC incidence trends in each geographic area. METHODS: To determine trends in the incidence of HNC, all cancer cases diagnosed in Girona and Tarragona (northeastern Spain) between 1994 and 2018, except mesenchymal and hematological neoplasms, were
