I pose the epistemological question of what makes the transfer of statistical approaches across disciplines, specifically between physics and biology, legitimate and fruitful despite intrinsic differences in their objects of study - a problem that resurfaces in contemporary interdisciplinary research relying on machine learning for statistical model building. I address it through the historical reconstruction of pivotal steps in the development of statistical thinking in the 19th century, where the appeal to the mathematical formalism of the Gaussian distribution acted as the visible trace of

Precision medicine (PM) promises better outcomes by aligning prevention and treatment with molecular and phenotypic profiles. But precision is not merely a clinical refinement; it is an epistemic shift in how health systems classify risk, allocate eligibility and define value. In this study, we argue that broad adoption of PM creates structural tension within solidarity-based health systems and exposes limits in conventional cost-effectiveness evaluation. Ethically, PM converts pooled probabilistic uncertainty into individualized biological prediction, making access increasingly conditional on

In this paper, we investigate the relationship between Popper's propensity interpretation of probability and Bohr's principle of complementarity. While Popper is often regarded as a philosophical antagonist of the Copenhagen interpretation, and Bohr never explicitly articulated his views on the nature of probability, we propose that the propensity interpretation can provide a coherent ontological foundation for Bohr's complementarity principle. This paper is primarily a rational reconstruction rather than a historical claim about Bohr's explicit commitments. We argue that both propensities and

Artificial intelligence is increasingly used to estimate diagnosis, prognosis, treatment response, deterioration, mortality, and other clinically relevant risks. These predictions may improve care, but they can also acquire prescriptive force: an estimate of what is likely to occur becomes a recommendation about what ought to be done. Existing ethical discussions describe opacity, bias, automation bias, responsibility gaps, threats to autonomy, and the need for meaningful human control. These concerns are important, but they do not fully explain how an accurate, transparent, and statistically

The rise of right-wing political movements supported by key players from big tech is transforming Western societies. This so-called techno-feudalism also implies challenges for bioethics. Racist agendas, intentional misinformation on health topics such as vaccinations, banned words and research topics in public institutions, and the massive funding of questionable biomedical research projects undermine health equity, patient safety, and autonomy. This new sociopolitical situation exacerbates a long-standing issue in healthcare that bioethics hitherto mostly failed to address adequately: societ

The paper aims to revisit Reichenbach's interpretation of special relativity, making two different but interrelated claims: (I) Reichenbach's interpretation is best characterized not as a variant of the conventionalist interpretation, but rather an early form of the dynamical interpretation; (II) Reichenbach offers a more robust version of the dynamical interpretation than contemporary accounts. On this basis, the paper argues that Reichenbach's approach provides the conceptual resources to (I) strengthen the dynamical approach against common criticisms from defenders of the geometrical approa

This article examines Buffon's general theory of reproduction, concentrating on his discussion of the similarities and differences between animals and plants and his explanation of nourishment, development and reproduction as effects of the same general cause. In the 'First Discourse' and various of the chapters of Volume II of Buffon's Natural History he seems to affirm two contradictory claims concerning the distinction between animals and plants: both that this distinction is absolute and indubitable and that it is false and insupportable. In this article I argue that this apparent contradi

GABAA and protein hypotheses aside, the lipid theory remains the most influential account of anaesthetic effects in modern pharmacology. An apparent aspect of the lipoidal model's continued dominance is its long historical pedigree, frequently aligned with a process of steady refinement from Bibra and Harless to Hermann, Pohl, and finally Meyer/Overton. This paper problematizes this continuum by placing the genesis of a short-lived experimental entity-protagon-at the centre of the transition from the fat-solvation theory to the modern lipoidal theory of anaesthesia, which broadly identifies fa

This article explores what it means to position oneself existentially in relation to illness weariness in myasthenia gravis. Grounded in phenomenology and informed by autoethnographic principles, the study examines how the body's changing disposition shapes lived meaning and coping in chronic illness. Phenomenological vignettes serve as experiential entry points, followed by reflective interpretation inspired by Havi Carel, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Drew Leder, and Kay Toombs. Two experiential themes emerge. First, When the body doesn't always follow one's lead anymore shows how myasthenia gravis

Theodore Chan and Gary Vilke criticize our arguments concerning a series of lab-based studies on asphyxiation. In this reply to their letter, we explain that Chan and Vilke's letter misrepresents our arguments in several important ways. We also clarify the notion of false advertising that we employed in our initial analysis and explain why some of the studies regarding asphyxiation represent instances of this problematic practice.

This article examines the impact of non-Western medical knowledge on European medicine during the Early Modern period, with a specific focus on the medical work of Spanish surgeon Pedro Arias de Benavides in New Spain. The paper discusses Benavides' innovative approach to treating syphilis in the New World, which challenged the inefficiencies of European scholastic medicine when dealing with diseases prevalent in the Americas. It shows that Benavides´scientific contribution stems from the assimilation of indigenous healing practices and American materia medica into his medical background, ofte

A complex trauma history is progressively detrimental and interferes with education in emerging adults. Instead of completing education at a higher level where fewer cases are found, previous studies have mostly targeted educational failure at the undergraduate level or below. A shift to a more positive view of the future for complex trauma survivors needs to be explored. A study of emerging adult graduate student complex trauma survivors helps understand the possibility of posttraumatic growth. This article presents a case study of a 24-year-old male who completed his graduate studies despite

Debates about whether the social sciences are harder than the natural sciences rarely analyze what discipline-level hardness amounts to. We offer a simple formal framework that models disciplines as sets of prediction tasks with associated difficulty, and links judgments of hardness to a discipline's best-achieved performance on such tasks and to the psychological impressiveness of those successes. Within this framework we develop two hypotheses about why the social sciences appear hard. The rigid demands hypothesis holds that, in the social sciences, we are precommitted to a narrow class of p

Organoids have become a central but contested notion across developmental biology, stem cell research, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. I argue that the term organoid functions not as a single, well-defined scientific kind but as a special kind of patchwork concept that I call looping patchwork concept: a coordination device whose stability depends on overlapping inferential patches distributed across material practices, ethical deliberations, and promissory imaginaries. Drawing on Hacking's looping kinds, Jasanoff's co-production framework, and recent philosophical work on patchw

In this paper, we explore the ethical complexities of deep-sea mining and scientific exploration. We focus on the extractivist underpinnings of Western scientific discovery, arguing that the desire to make the unknown known often leads to exploitative practices that jeopardize fragile ecosystems. Traditional ethical frameworks, which require knowledge of the subjects of moral consideration, are inadequate for reflecting on the scientific exploration of the vast unknowns of the deep-sea. Instead, we propose an ethics of attunement—a relational approach that emphasizes engagement without extract

Respect for autonomy is a central ethical principle in end-of-life care. However, due to cognitive decline, emotional distress, and the existential weight of end-of-life decisions, many patients may struggle to articulate or sustain their preferences without appropriate forms of support. The question, then, is not solely how to respect patients' autonomy in end-of-life care, but how autonomy, understood in relational terms, can be genuinely fostered. To address this question, the article advances a normative and practice-oriented model of decision-making that integrates two approaches often tr

In this article I compare two interpretations of quantum mechanics (QM) that draw inspiration from phenomenology: the London-Bauer-French interpretation (hereafter LBF) as articulated by Steven French (French, 2024), and QBism (Fuchs, 2010; Fuchs and Stacey, 2019; Fuchs et al., 2014) . I give special attention to certain disagreements between QBism and LBF identified in French (2023, 2024), as well as French's related claims that QBism may be at odds with key ideas in phenomenology. My main finding is that QBism does not fare so badly with phenomenology as French makes out; in particular it ca

This position paper explores the artistic value that can be attributed to the ocean through works of art. The starting point is the economic argument used in ocean conservation, which is based on the concept of ecosystem services (ES), primarily considered as goods and services the ocean provides to society. Through an interdisciplinary approach, we briefly discuss the successes and limitations of this concept and the potential role of artistic value in relation to it. We then examine three case studies of contemporary artworks produced between 2015 and 2021, closely tied to marine natural sci

The problem of providing an objective characterization of human variation have been often intermingled with the questionable task of providing scientific grounds for racism. The source of this confusion lies in the misconception that Petrus Camper's (1722-1789) theory of the facial line demonstrates the superiority of the Caucasian racial type. In this paper, we argue that the invention of the facial line, far from obeying Euro-centric aesthetic bias, grounded Camper's neutrality with respect to any claim of racial superiority. This can be understood by analyzing the representational function
