Measurement by multidetector CT scan of the volume of hypopharyngeal and laryngeal tumours: accuracy and reproducibility.

The purpose of this study was to register the accuracy and reproducibility of the multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) estimate of hypopharyngeal and laryngeal tumor volumes. Eighteen consecutive patients with larynx or hypopharynx squamous cell carcinoma were enrolled in this prospective trial, scheduled for surgery and examined by MDCT. A total of 72 tumor volume measurements were reported by two different operators, one of them in three different sessions, using the sum-of-areas method. The results were compared with the volume calculated by surgical sampling. The mean tumor volume meas

Bone regeneration after radicular cyst removal with and without guided bone regeneration.

In order to determine the degree of bone regeneration after removal of radicular cysts using guided bone regeneration (GBR), a prospective, controlled and randomized clinical study was performed. Thirty patients with radicular cysts were divided into three groups. One group, the control group (n=10 patients), was treated by enucleation and primary closure. The other two groups were treated by enucleation and primary closure but GBR was used in addition, using a resorbable membrane (n=10) and a nonresorbable membrane (n=10). The membranes were fixed with nonresorbable Memfix System screws. The

Partial Anomalous Pulmonary Venous Connection Coexisting with Lung Cancer: A Case Report and Review of Relevant Cases from the Literature.

A 45-year-old man had an abnormal shadow in the right lung field on an annual screening chest X-ray. He was diagnosed with Stage IA (cT1bN0M0) lung cancer. Initially, we did not notice an anomalous vein on non-contrast computed tomography. However, we found that the right upper lobe bronchus branched from the lateral wall of the right main bronchial orifice, above the level of the common right upper lobe bronchus. Therefore, the bronchus was thought to be a tracheal bronchus. We carefully reevaluated the patient using three-dimensional computed tomography angiography. This technique showed tha

Magnetic resonance imaging based 3-dimensional printed breast surgical guide for breast-conserving surgery in ductal carcinoma in situ: a clinical trial.

Breast-conserving surgery (BCS) is performed in patients with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) because of the small size of the tumor. It is essential to know the quantitative extent of the tumor before performing this precise partial resection surgery. A three-dimensional printed (3DP) breast surgical guide (BSG) was developed using information obtained from supine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 3D printing technology and it was used for treating patients with breast cancer. Here, we report our experience with the application of the BSG for patients with DCIS. Patients with breast cancer

In vivo comparison of key quantitative parameters measured with 3D peripheral angiography, 2D peripheral quantitative angiography and intravascular ultrasound.

The aim of this study was to compare the measures of luminal stenosis between the two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Quantitative Vessel Analysis (QVA) generated by CAAS QVA software and intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Invasive contrast angiography is considered gold standard for diagnostic imaging and intervention in both coronary and peripheral arterial disease. However, it is based on 2D images depicting complicated 3D arterial anatomy. To overcome these limitations, 3D QVA has been developed to bridge the gap between 2D QVA and endovascular imaging. The Cricothyroid Joint: A Practical Guide for Distinguishing Between Different Joint Types.

OBJECTIVE: Type A cricothyroid joint (CTJ) leads to a higher elongation of the vocal folds than Type B/C CTJ. Therefore, the determination for the CTJ type is important whether to perform a cricoid-thyroid approximation for a pitch elevation in transwomen with gender dysphoria. This study aimed to develop a tool for clinicians and radiologists for distinguishing between Type A (cricoid cartilage protuberance) and Type B/C (flat surface with/without cartilage of the cricoid) CTJs on high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT). STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective study. METHODS: Analysis of 60

The saw-tooth sign as a clinical clue for intrathoracic central airway obstruction.

BACKGROUND: The saw-tooth sign was first described by Sanders et al in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome as one cause of extrathoracic central airway obstruction. The mechanism of the saw-tooth sign has not been conclusively clarified. The sign has also been described in various extrathoracic central airway diseases, such as in burn victims with thermal injury to the upper airways, Parkinson's disease, tracheobronchomalacia, laryngeal dyskinesia, and pedunculated tumors of the upper airway. CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old man was referred to our hospital with a two-month history

CT colonography versus double-contrast barium enema for screening of colorectal cancer: comparison of radiation burden.

Our aim is to compare the radiation dose associated with a low-dose CT colonography (CTC) protocol for colorectal cancer screening with that delivered by double-contrast barium enema (DCBE). CTC of twenty asymptomatic individuals (M:F = 10:10) participating to a colorectal cancer screening program and DCBE of fifteen patients (M:F = 6:9) were evaluated. For CTC, absorbed dose was determined by calculating the dose-length product for each CTC examination from measurements on a CT dose phantom equipped with a CT ion chamber. For DCBE, the free-in-air Kerma at the patient's X-ray entry surface an
