We reviewed the results of 19 patients with hemipelvic allograft reconstructions after periacetabular tumor resection at Massachusetts General Hospital from 1977 to 1996. Histological diagnosis showed chondrosarcoma (in 7 patients), osteosarcoma in 5, and other tumors in 7. Seventeen patients were continuously disease-free for 12-228 months (mean, 57 months). One patient died of sepsis caused by wound infection after surgery for local recurrence. 94 patients with malignant melanoma or soft tissue sarcoma of the extremities were submitted to isolated cytostatic limb perfusion. With palliative indication for treatment of malignant melanoma, the 5 year survival rate was 25% after perfusion with methotrexate and 50% after perfusion with melphalan. The adjuvant perfusion showed very good results, too. Furthermore, the authors report on their first experiences in regional cytostatic perfusion of soft tissue sarcoma and bone sarcoma.

Vascularised fibular grafts (VFGs ) are a valuable surgical technique in limb salvage after resection of a tumour. The primary objective of this multicentre study was to assess the risk factors for failure and complications for using a VFG after resection of a tumour. PURPOSE: Retrospective review describing the 35-year University of Florida experience with Ewing's tumors of the lower extremity.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Fifty-three patients were treated between 1971 and 2006. Thirty patients were treated with radiotherapy (RT) alone and 23 patients were treated with surgery +/- RT. Larger tumors and tumors of the femur were treated more often with definitive RT. Median potential follow-up was 19.2 years. Sarcomas often occur in patients' extremities and treatment typically involves bone resection/limb salvage surgery. Such treatments leave survivors with physical disfigurements, functional disabilities, and/or emotional traumas. Our post-surgery psychological intervention investigated how these experiences impinge on sarcoma survivors' lives.
