[Eye and spondylarthropathies].

Eye involvement can occur in the course of ankylosing spondylitis and other spondylarthropathies (reactive arthritis, enteropathic and psoriatic rheumatism). The most frequent presentation is an acute anterior, unilateral, relapsing, sometimes in the contralateral eye uveitis. Local treatment that associates corticosteroids and cycloplegia usually leads to a complete healing, without sequelae. Involvement of other ocular structures is rare in spondylarthropathies.

[Ocular manifestations of primary systemic vasculitis].

A variety of ophthalmic manifestations can occur in patients who have systemic vasculitides and may be the presenting feature. Ocular involvement is frequently found and can result in significant morbidity, even in blindness. Early diagnosis and treatment may improve visual outcome. The management is challenging and requires a multidisciplinary approach. Treatment of ocular manifestations and systemic disease usually follows the same path. The mainstay of treatment is the use of systemic corticosteroids, usually combined with steroid-sparing immunosuppressive drugs. New, promising, emerging th

Ocular vasculitis: a multidisciplinary approach.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The ophthalmologist has direct visual access to inflamed vessels when examining the retina, and "vasculitis" in ophthalmology has so far mainly referred to retinal vasculitis. In the past few years the means to explore vasculitis in the ocular sphere have improved. Indocyanine green angiography now enables the analysis of choroidal inflammatory vasculopathy as well as vasculitis of the sclera (scleritis) and episclera (episcleritis) in addition to retinal vasculitis. Because vasculitis detected by the ophthalmologist can be the presenting sign of a systemic disease and has t…

Ocular Manifestations of Inherited Phospholipase-Cγ2-Associated Antibody Deficiency and Immune Dysregulation.

PURPOSE: To report the ocular manifestations of phospholipase-Cγ2-associated antibody deficiency and immune dysregulation (PLAID). METHODS: Case report and literature review. RESULTS: A 21-year-old woman diagnosed with PLAID was referred for evaluation of repeated episodes of ocular inflammation resulting in bilateral peripheral corneal pannus with episcleritis and corneal scarring accompanied by systemic manifestations including epidermolysis bullosa and interstitial lung disease. Systemic immunosuppression with corticosteroids and interleukin-1 (IL-1) receptor antagonist (anakinra) was sup…

Renal & ocular targets for therapy in Wegener's granulomatosis.

Wegener's granulomatosis (WG) is a multisystem small-vessel vasculitis which is characterised by granulomatous inflammation. Respiratory tract involvement is most commonly seen, affecting up to 85% of patients, closely followed by the renal system in up to 75% of patients; ocular involvement in WG is estimated to occur in 50-60% of patients. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the renal and ocular manifestations of WG and discuss the rationale behind the therapeutic approach. In particular, we will focus on how understanding the disease processes in both of these organs has

Scedosporium prolificans sclerokeratitis 10 years after pterygium excision with adjunctive mitomycin C.

Scedosporium prolificans is an unusual infection, especially following pterygium surgery. A 63-year-old man who developed an uncomfortable, red right eye 10 years after pterygium surgery with adjunctive mitomycin C is described. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this is the first reported case of S. prolificans sclerokeratitis following pterygium surgery with adjunctive mitomycin C.
