Public health authorities race to contain fast-moving Zika outbreak.

With the Zika virus disease spreading rapidly through Latin America, public health authorities in the United States are racing to contain the outbreak. By the end of February, the CDC had confirmed 147 Zika cases in U.S. residents who had traveled to Zika-endemic areas. While symptoms of Zika tend to be mild, the virus has been linked to serious birth defects, so public health efforts are focused primarily at mitigating the risk Zika poses to pregnant women. By mid-February, nine pregnant women who had traveled to Zika-endemic areas and contracted the virus had been reported to the CDC. Of the

Progress toward elimination of lymphatic filariasis--Togo, 2000--2009.

Lymphatic filariasis (LF) is a disabling, mosquito-borne disease of humans caused by the parasitic filarial nematodes Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi, and Brugia timori. In 2000, the Global Program to Eliminate LF (GPELF) was established with the objective of eliminating LF as a public health problem by 2020. At that time, 80 countries had ongoing transmission, with an estimated 1.34 billion persons at risk for infection and 120 million infected. This report describes the LF elimination program in Togo, one of the 39 LF-endemic countries in the World Health Organization (WHO) African Regio

Health concerns of migrant backstretch workers at horse racetracks.

BACKGROUND: Backstretch workers are part of an itinerant labor community that cares for horses at racetracks across the U.S. Since the 1970s, this workforce has increasingly been composed of migrants, especially from Mexico and Guatemala. No studies have focused systematic attention on health concerns of this population and how illness is influenced by unique working and living conditions. METHODS: We administered a survey orally to 84 backstretch workers at a Florida racetrack to understand self-reported medical history and current major health concerns. RESULTS: The most frequent responses

[Sporotrichosis: development and challenges of an epidemic].

In the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, sporotrichosis reached epidemic levels, involving humans and cats. Preliminary data indicate that approximately 2200 human cases were diagnosed between 1998 and December of 2009, and 3244 cats were treated. The geographic distribution of cases reveals a concentration in the City of Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. The disease affects mostly women of a low socioeconomic status, aged 40 to 55 years, who work as housekeepers. Itraconazole has been the drug of choice for treatment. Although sporotrichosis does not usually affect organs other than the skin,

New antithrombotic drugs.

Thrombosis, both venous and arterial, is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Consequently, there is an ongoing search for new antithrombotic drugs, particularly novel antiplatelet agents and anticoagulants. A better understanding of the biochemical pathways involved in platelet activation and coagulation and of the links between these systems and the impact of thrombosis on inflammation has led to the identification of new targets for antithrombotic drugs. This paper focuses on these new targets and new antiplatelet drugs and anticoagulants and describes the major advances in t

Outbreak of staphylococcal food intoxication after consumption of pasteurized milk products, June 2007, Austria.

On June 13, 2007, the public health authority informed the Austrian Agency for Health and Food Safety about 40 children from two neighboring elementary schools who had fallen ill with abdominal cramps and vomiting on June 8. School milk products consumed on June 8 were suspected as the source of the outbreak. On June 8, the milk products provided by local dairy X to eight elementary schools and two nurseries. The short incubation period - all cases fell ill on the day on which the products were consumed - and the short duration of illness (1-2 days) strongly suggested intoxication. In order to

What do we really know about antibiotic pharmacodynamics?

Antibiotic pharmacodynamics is an evolving science that focuses on the relationship between drug concentration and pharmacologic effect, which is an antibiotic-induced bacterial death that also can manifest as an adverse drug reaction. The pharmacologic action of antibiotics usually can be described as concentration dependent or independent, although such classifications are highly reliant on the specific antibiotic and bacterial pathogen being studied. Quantitative pharmacodynamic parameters, such as ratio of the area under the concentration-time curve during a 24-hour dosing period to minimu

Human recombinant DNA-derived antihaemophilic factor (factor VIII) in the treatment of haemophilia A: conclusions of a 5-year study of home therapy. The KOGENATE Study Group.

Fifty-eight previously treated haemophilic subjects were treated exclusively with the recombinant FVIII (rFVIII-KOGENATE) produced by Bayer Corporation (Berkeley, CA) in an international multicentre prospective study of more than 5 years duration. Fifty-four of the 58 had severe haemophilia (< 2% FVIII) and four had moderate haemophilia (2-5% FVIII); 23/58 (40%) were seropositive for HIV, while 35/58 (60%) were HIV seronegative. Patients were monitored for safety and efficacy over a median period of 4.7 years (range 0.9-5.9 years) and received 17 922 infusions totalling 25.7 million units of r

Twelve-year review of horse-related trauma registry presentations to a regional Australian Emergency Department.

BACKGROUND: The size, strength, and unpredictability of horses, makes any interaction a potential situation for minor to severe injury. Despite this, horses continue to be popular for work and recreational activities. There have been five recent Australian publications that have examined various aspects of horse-related trauma, but none have been conducted in regional New South Wales (NSW). This study aims to report on the pattern of horse-related trauma that met the Institute of Trauma Injury Management's (ITIM) Trauma Registry criteria for people who presented to the emergency department at
