The success of stainless steel crowns placed with the Hall technique: a retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: In this retrospective study, the authors evaluated the clinical and radiographic success of stainless steel crowns (SSCs) used to restore primary molars with caries lesions, placed by means of both the traditional technique (involving complete caries removal and tooth reduction before placement of the SSC) and the Hall technique (involving no caries removal, no crown preparation and no use of local anesthetic before placement of the SSC). METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective chart review by using the patient records at a private pediatric dental practice at which the Hal

Intrusion of incisors in adult patients with marginal bone loss.

Elongated and spaced incisors are common problems in patients suffering from severe periodontal disease. Thirty patients characterized by marginal bone loss and deep overbite were treated by intrusion of incisors. Three different methods for intrusion were applied: (1) J hooks and extraoral high-pull headgear, (2) utility arches, (3) intrusion bent into a loop in a 0.17 x 0.25-inch wire, and (4) base arch as described by Burstone. The intrusion was evaluated from the displacement of the apex, incision, and the center of resistance of the most prominent or elongated central incisor. Change in t

Periodontal ligament tissue reactions to trauma and gingival inflammation. An experimental study in the beagle dog.

The aims of the present study were to analyze (i) which tissue changes may occur in the zone of co-destruction to better understand why trauma from occlusion may induce additional attachment loss, and (ii) whether changes occur in the periodontal ligament tissue when an inflammatory lesion (ICT) approaches the periodontal ligament space. 16, 1-year-old beagle dogs, were selected and divided into 2 groups, group A and group B, consisting of 6 and 10 dogs, respectively. In group A, on day 0, a bucco-lingual jiggling type movement was induced resulting in increasing tooth mobility at P3 (test too

Comparative clinical performance of stainless steel crowns placed using conventional, hall, and modified Hall techniques in carious primary molars: A three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Stainless steel crowns (SSCs) are the restoration of choice for extensively carious primary molars because of their durability and clinical success. The Hall technique (HT) and modified HT (MHT) have been introduced as minimally invasive alternatives to conventional SSC placement; however, comparative evidence remains limited. AIM: This study aimed to compare the clinical performance of SSCs placed using the conventional technique (CT), HT, and MHT. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: A three-arm parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted in the Department of Pediatric and Preventive

[The value of restoration marginal fit as risk factor for pathological root resorption in primary teeth].

The presented clinical case describes the need for repetitive dental treatment in a child with pathological root resorption in all the primary molars after pulpotomy and composite resin restoration. Pathological resorption is of inflammatory origin in the majority of cases and an important risk factor for it is marginal leakage of the restoration. According to literature, the optimal restorative choice considering marginal fit are stainless steel pediatric crowns. Root resorption in the patient was asymptomatic. It proves the necessity for radiological control after treatment and 3, 6, 12, 24

A virtual clinical feasibility study for the indication of one-piece ceramic implants in the anterior maxilla.

AIM: One-piece ceramic implants (O-PCIs) have proven to be clinically useful, with high survival rates. The biocompatibility and bio-inert characteristics of ceramics in addition to the fact that minimal plaque deposits occur on these materials provide esthetic advantages and justification for their use in the anterior maxilla. The objective of the present study was to investigate the suitability of O-PCI use in the anterior maxilla. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data of patients who had received conventional two-piece titanium implants were analyzed. Virtual planning was performed to determine

Developmental defects of the dental crown in chimpanzees from the Taï National Park, Côte D'Ivoire: coronal waisting.

We describe a developmental defect that manifests as a mild constricted "waist" in anterior teeth from seven of nine chimpanzee individuals from Taï National Park, Côte D'Ivoire. The sample consists of 21 canine teeth and one incisor, imaged in profile with a digital microscope. Twelve teeth are affected. The waist develops during tooth formation as an external, encircling depression in the contour of the outer enamel surface, more easily seen labially. It is not a thinning of enamel per se, but rather a slight decrement in dentinal crown volume, shown in microCT scans as a change in contour o

Opalescent dentine in two affected siblings.

This report describes the dental findings and management of siblings in a family in which three generations had been affected by osteogenesis imperfecta Type IV with opalescent dentine. Hereditary opalescent dentine, or opalescent teeth, is a pathologic dental condition characterised by a disturbance of dentine formation that occurs concurrently with osteogenesis imperfecta. Osteogenesis imperfecta is a genetically heterogenous group of systemic disorders of the connective tissue. The two siblings affected with opalescent dentine were treated under general anaesthesia, and included stainless s

Crown lengthening to facilitate restorative treatment in the presence of incomplete passive eruption.

Crown-lengthening surgery can be utilized to expose subgingival caries. In this clinical case, a patient presented with incomplete passive eruption in the maxillary anterior sextant. This case illustrates that when incomplete passive eruption is present and restorative treatment is necessary in the maxillary anterior sextant, crown-lengthening surgery not only provides exposure of subgingival caries but can also result in a more esthetic therapeutic outcome.

Epidermolysis bullosa: dental and anesthetic management of two cases.

Epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a group of rare genetic disorders which are of dental interest because of their specific oral manifestations and management difficulties. Two cases of recessive EB which may be classified clinically as the atrophicans-gravis Herlitz type are described. Dental therapy consisted of extractions and stainless steel crown restorations, with inhalation general anesthesia. The need for and advantages of early preventive and restorative dental care are illustrated by the cases presented.

Biomechanical perspectives on dentine cracks and fractures: Implications in their clinical management.

OBJECTIVES: The present review discussed the biomechanical properties of cracks and fractures in crown and root dentine and attempted to explain why cracked teeth and vertical root fractures are so frequent despite the existence of multiple crack toughening mechanisms in dentine. The implications of this knowledge were used to justify how these defects are managed clinically. DATA, SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION: Literature search was conducted on PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus for a narrative review on fracture mechanics of crown and root dentine as well as the clinical management of cracke
