A total of 226 surgical operations were made with a Coblator II plasma surgery system including tonsillectomy, uvulopalatoplasty, reduction of inferior turbinates, and removal of soft palate neoplasm. This method permitted to avoid intraoperative bleeding and reduce to 2% the frequency of hemorrhage in the postoperative period. Moreover, pain syndrome was virtually absent and reactive processes in soft tissues were rare. Taken together, these effects accounted for the lower rate of postoperative complications, faster patients' recovery, and shorter hospitalization time.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of successful laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) on cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate is twice as frequent among Indians of British Columbia as among non-Indians, although the reverse is the case whenever we consider isolated cleft palate. A family is described with 12 affected males. Close examination of this family revealed that the most likely explanation for the cleft palate was an X-linked recessive gene. It is concluded that isolated cleft palate among the Indians of British Columbia is an extremely rare anomaly.

BACKGROUND: Total rhinectomy is an invasive procedure that significantly impairs the intranasal turbulence, humidification and heating of inspired air. The use of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty for the treatment of sleep-disordered breathing disorders such as primary snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea has diminished over the past years because of the emergence of less invasive procedures and alternative therapeutic options.
