Long-term effects of auditory training in severely or profoundly deaf children.

Despite new technological advances in the rehabilitation of audition in profoundly deaf children, auditory training remains a fundamental part of their education. Consequently, it is necessary to learn what kind of stimuli, what kind of auditory tasks, and what kind of learning procedures generate faster and more long-lasting benefits. The present study evaluates a training program that includes numerous nonlinguistic stimuli that tap into several means of cognitive processing. The program is based on an implicit learning procedure and was tested with six severely or profoundly deaf children.

Dementia prevention in memory clinics: recommendations from the European task force for brain health services.

Observational population studies indicate that prevention of dementia and cognitive decline is being accomplished, possibly as an unintended result of better vascular prevention and healthier lifestyles. Population aging in the coming decades requires deliberate efforts to further decrease its prevalence and societal burden. Increasing evidence supports the efficacy of preventive interventions on persons with intact cognition and high dementia risk. We report recommendations for the deployment of second-generation memory clinics (Brain Health Services) whose mission is evidence-based and ethic

Hypnosis, rumination, and depression: catalyzing attention and mindfulness-based treatments.

Over the past 30 years, mental health practitioners, encouraged by rigorous empirical studies and literature and meta-analytic reviews, have increasingly appreciated the ability of hypnosis to modulate attention, imagination, and motivation in the service of therapeutic goals. This article describes how hypnosis can be used as an adjunctive procedure in the treatment of depression and rumination symptoms, in particular. The focus is on attention-based treatments that include rumination-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive control training, and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Th

A neuroimaging functional connectivity signature of emotional conflict monitoring predicting cognitive decline in type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders. Changes in the connections between brain regions responsible for emotions and memory might play a role in the reduced cognitive function observed in individuals with diabetes. Utilizing machine learning approaches on neuroimaging data shows potential for exploring these intricate associations. A research study was carried out with 40 individuals diagnosed with T2D and 30 control participants, all of whom were middle-aged and right-handed. The participants underwent neuropsychological assessments and fMR

Evolutionary explanations of depression and cognitive control dysfunction: A literature review.

Cognitive control dysfunction, including impairments in inhibition, shifting, updating, and the balance between proactive and reactive control, is a robust feature of depression. Although these patterns are well documented, their origins and possible functions remain debated. This narrative review asks whether recurrent depressive cognitive-control profiles can be interpreted, in part, through evolutionary frameworks. Integrating Social Rank Theory, the Analytical Rumination Hypothesis, and Social Bargaining Theory, this review maps depressive control patterns onto putative functions related t

Cognitive and non-cognitive factors in educational and occupational outcomes-Specific to reading disability?

Low education and unemployment are common adult-age outcomes associated with childhood RD (c-RD). However, adult-age cognitive and non-cognitive factors associated with different outcomes remain unknown. We studied whether these outcomes are equally common among individuals with c-RD and controls and whether these outcomes are related to adult-age literacy skills or cognitive and non-cognitive factors or their interaction with c-RD. We examined adult participants with c-RD (n = 48) and their matched controls (n = 37). Low education was more common among c-RD than the controls, whereas long-ter

Uncertainties in the selection of applicants for medical school.

Decisions about admissions to medical school are based on assessments of the applicants' cognitive achievements and non-cognitive traits. Admission criteria are expected to be fair, transparent, evidence-based and legally defensible. However, unlike cognitive criteria, which are highly reliable and moderately valid, the reliability and validity of the non-cognitive criteria are low or uncertain. Their uncertain predictive value is due not only to their limited validity, but also to the unknown prevalence of the desirable non-cognitive traits in the applicants' pool. Consequently, the use of no

The combination of low-intensity resistance exercise and electrical muscle stimulation effectively enhances executive function in men.

OBJECTIVES: Resistance exercise enhances executive function (EF) more effectively at moderate or higher intensities than at low intensity resistance exercise (LRE), probably with increased neural activity and lactate production to meet brain energy demands. Given that LRE remains widely applicable with less perceived exertion, and electrical muscle stimulation (EMS) increases lactate production and neural activation, we investigated whether combining LRE with EMS (LRE-EMS) effectively enhances EF, without increasing perceived exertion. DESIGN: A crossover randomized study. METHODS: Seventeen

Learning to be inventive in the face of statistics: A positive reappraisal intervention for statistics anxiety.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The burden of statistics anxiety on students calls for effective interventions. This study investigated whether a cognitive reappraisal training designed to stimulate the generation of positive re-interpretations may yield behavioral changes in anxiety measures and changes in cerebral activation patterns reflecting the activation of approach/avoidance motivational tendencies (frontal EEG alpha asymmetry response). METHODS: Three groups of female psychology students (n = 45) with statistics anxiety were tested. Two groups received a guided, two-week reappraisal train
