Effects of self-control, drug-use peers and family attachment on drug use among Chinese users: A gender-specific analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The increasing trend of synthetic drug use has been a significant concern in China. The current research adopted a gendered perspective to examine the effects of self-control, drug-use peers and family attachment on drug use frequency in China. METHODS: This cross-sectional survey research recruited 785 people who used drugs from four compulsory drug rehabilitation institutions in Guangdong and Shandong Province of China in 2018. Ordinary least squares regression analyses were conducted to examine the gendered effects of self-control (Grasmick et al.'s cognitive scale), drug-use

Clinical Trial Protocol: Phase 3, Multicenter, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled, Parallel-Group, Efficacy, and Safety Study Comparing EG-1962 to Standard of Care Oral Nimodipine in Adults with Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage [NEWTON-2 (Nimodipine Microparticles to Enhance Recovery While Reducing TOxicity After SubarachNoid Hemorrhage)].

BACKGROUND: Nimodipine is the only drug approved in the treatment of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) in many countries. EG-1962, a product developed using the Precisa™ platform, is an extended-release microparticle formulation of nimodipine that can be administered intraventricularly or intracisternally. It was developed to test the hypothesis that delivering higher concentrations of extended-release nimodipine directly to the cerebrospinal fluid would provide superior efficacy compared to systemic administration. RESULTS: A Phase 1/2a multicenter, controlled, randomized, open-label

Adherence to a strict specimen-labeling policy decreases the incidence of erroneous blood grouping of blood bank specimens.

BACKGROUND: To assess the effectiveness of a system of preventing incompatible blood transfusions resulting from the misidentification of patient specimens, a prospective analysis of all blood samples submitted to a laboratory was performed. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Incorrectly labeled specimens (rejected samples) were tested for ABO and Rh type, and routine antibody screens were performed. Test results were compared to historic patient data or patient data obtained from subsequently submitted (correctly) labeled specimens. For comparison, all discrepant serologic results from appropriately

ABO blood groups, Rhesus factor, and Behçet's disease.

INTRODUCTION: Recently, numerous studies have been carried out to explain the genetics and immunopathogenesis of Behçet's disease (BD). There is still insufficient understanding of its etiopathogenesis, but substantial genetic and immune system abnormalities have been suggested. Several studies have shown remarkable associations of ABO blood groups with various diseases. This study investigated the relationship between ABO and Rhesus (D) blood groups and Behçet's disease in Turkish patients. METHODS: Clinical data on gender, ABO, and Rhesus blood type of patients with BD were collected at the

Is there an association of ABO blood groups and Rhesus factor with alopecia areata?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by noncicatricial hair loss localized on hair, beard, mustache, eyebrow, eyelash, and sometimes on the body. Although etiopathogenesis is not fully understood, many studies show remarkable associations between various diseases and ABO blood groups. However, there is no study with AA and blood groups. METHODS: Healthy people and patients with AA were included in this study. A total of 155 patients with AA and 299 healthy controls were included in the study. RESULTS: ABO blood group distribution in patients with

Dynamic Borrowing From Historical Controls via the Synthetic Prior With Covariates in Randomized Clinical Trials.

Motivated by a rheumatoid arthritis clinical trial, we propose a new Bayesian method called SPx, standing for synthetic prior with covariates, to borrow information from historical trials to reduce the control group size in a new trial. The method involves a novel use of Bayesian model averaging to balance between multiple possible relationships between the historical and new trial data, allowing the historical data to be dynamically trusted or discounted as appropriate. We require only trial-level summary statistics, which are available more often than patient-level data. Through simulations

Modern sources of controls in case-control studies.

In 1992, Wacholder et al. developed a theoretical framework for case-control studies to minimize bias in control selection. They described 3 comparability principles (study base, deconfounding, and comparable accuracy) to reduce the potential for selection bias, confounding, and information bias in case-control studies. Wacholder et al. explained how these principles apply to traditional sources of control participants for case-control studies, including population controls, hospital controls, controls from a medical practice, friend or relative controls, and deceased controls. The goal of the

Study protocol: effects of treatment expectation toward repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) in major depressive disorder-a randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Patients' expectations toward any given treatment are highly important for the effectiveness of such treatment, as has been demonstrated for several disorders. In particular, in major depressive disorder (MDD), one of the most frequent and most serious mental disorders with severe consequences for the affected, the augmentation of available treatment options could mean a ground-breaking success. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), a new, non-invasive, and well-tolerated intervention with proven effects in the treatment of MDD, appears particularly suitable in this

Effectiveness of grief interventions in underrepresented regions: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

Background: Most evidence on grief and bereavement interventions originates from Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic (WEIRD) populations, raising concerns about the generalizability and cultural relevance of existing findings in diverse global contexts. Individuals confronted with the death of a close person, particularly in cases of sudden or potentially traumatic loss, may be at increased risk of adverse psychological and physical health outcomes, highlighting the importance of effective interventions. This study aimed to synthesize evidence on the effectiveness of grief

Triple network connectivity changes in patients with major depressive disorder versus healthy controls via structural network imaging after electroconvulsive therapy treatment.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of electroconvulsive treatment (ECT) on dynamic structural network connectivity in major depressive disorder (MDD), based on the triple-network model. METHODS: Twenty-one first-episode, drug-naïve patients with MDD and 21 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects were recruited. Bilateral electrical stimulation was performed thrice a week for a total of 4-5 weeks in the MDD group. MRI data were obtained, and triple-network structural connectivity was evaluated using source-based morphometry (SBM) analysis. A paired t-test was used to analyze structural connect

Emotion regulation and trichotillomania: a comparison of clinical and nonclinical hair pulling.

This study investigated the emotion regulation hypothesis of trichotillomania (TTM) using a retrospective self-report measure and an experimental hair-pulling task. Participants diagnosed with TTM (n=34) and nonclinical control (NC) volunteers (n=32) were compared on ratings of emotional experiences associated with hair pulling. Data from the retrospective self-report measure supported the emotion regulation hypothesis of TTM. The TTM group reported larger decreases than the NC participants in boredom, sadness, anger, and tension, and larger increases in relief and calm from before to during p
