Idiopathic scoliosis (IS) is a structural lateral spinal curvature of ≥10° that affects up to 3% of otherwise healthy children and can lead to life-long problems in severe cases. It is well-established that IS is a genetic disorder. Previous studies have identified genes that may contribute to the IS phenotype, but the overall genetic etiology of IS is not well understood. We propose a model for membrane-cortex adhesion that couples membrane deformations, hydrodynamics, and kinetics of membrane-cortex ligands. In its simplest form, the model gives explicit predictions for the critical pressure for membrane detachment and for the value of adhesion energy. We show here that serotonin, both in vivo and in vitro, induced a marked activation of phosphofructokinase, the rate-limiting enzyme in glycolysis, in the membrane-skeleton fraction from erythrocytes. Concomitantly, the hormone induced a striking increase in lactate content, reflecting stimulation of glycolysis. The enzyme's activity in the cytosolic (soluble) fraction remained unchanged. Inclusion body myositis (IBM), a sporadic inflammatory myopathy, is the most frequently occurring progressive myopathy in adults older than 55 years. The clinical, light microscopical, and electron microscopical features of a mesectodermal leiomyoma of the ciliary body are presented. This exceptionally rare and apparently benign tumour is considered to be of neural crest origin. In the case described the tumour cells were seen to contain thin filaments with focal densities and conspicuous numbers of mitochondria, and smooth muscle protein was demonstrated by immunohistochemical means.

This paper describes the redistribution of septate junctions during an increase in diameter of myoepithelial cells from mesenteries of the sea anemone Metridium senile (L). Each septum was composed of a filament core, 9.5-10.2 nm in diameter, which had a double row of lateral projections from each side to the adjacent cell membrane.
