Intrauterine gestational diabetes mellitus, child anxiety, and internalizing symptoms: moderation by physical activity.

CONTEXT: Prenatal exposure to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is linked to increased risk for offspring mental health disorders, yet few studies account for maternal mental health or potential protective factors. OBJECTIVE: This work aimed to examine whether prenatal GDM exposure is associated with child anxiety and depressive symptoms, independent of maternal depression, and whether child physical activity (PA) modifies these associations. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, data included 138 child-mother dyads (mean [SD] child age: 11.1 [2.5] years; 40% GDM-exposed; 56% female

Emphysema Severity Index: a new spirometric parameter in epidemiology.

BACKGROUND: The Emphysema Severity Index (ESI) is a recently developed parameter describing the curvilinear shape of the expiratory flow/volume curve to evaluate the emphysema contribution to airflow obstruction (AO), as observed in COPD patients and geriatric populations. The aim of the present study was to assess ESI usefulness in respiratory epidemiology studies where spirometry is typically the only available objective tool. METHODS: An adult population sample of Pisa (Central Italy) (n=685, 47.3% male, mean age 53.3 years) participated in an epidemiological survey through standardised qu

Aging in a highly polluted world: challenges and solutions to prevent Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent neurodegenerative disorder globally and a leading cause of disability and death among the elderly. As populations age worldwide, the epidemiological burden of AD is expected to more than double by 2050, surpassing 150 million affected individuals. While genetic susceptibility, particularly the apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE4) allele, modulates individual risk, most AD cases are late-onset and shaped by complex interactions between genetic background and modifiable environmental exposures. Environmental pollution has emerged as a critical and potentiall

Epidemiology and factors associated with Talaromyces marneffei detection in the mainland of China, 2022-2024: a cross-sectional study of hospitalized patients.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies of Talaromyces marneffei (T. marneffei) infection are largely confined to HIV-positive populations and specific geographic regions, whereas its population-scale characteristics and environmental factors associated with infection in China are lacking. This study investigates spatiotemporal patterns, host susceptibility, and environmental correlates of T. marneffei detection in Chinese mainland. METHODS: Targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS) data from patients hospitalized for acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) from 2022 to 2024 were used for epi

Fetal response to maternal exposures of environmental chemicals: Utility of a four-cell human feto-maternal interface organ-on-chip.

Epidemiological studies suggest that maternal exposures to environmental pollutants may be linked to spontaneous preterm birth. Mechanistic studies are needed to provide support to these hypotheses; however, existing in vitro models do not replicate human feto-maternal barriers beyond placenta. The recently developed four-cell Feto-Maternal interface Organ-On-Chip (FMi-OOC) model enables studies of chemical effects that are critically important for maintaining full-term pregnancy. We tested four environmental pollutants that have been associated with preterm birth - dichlorodiphenyltrichloroet

Inconsistent outcome measurement in depression psychotherapy trials: A systematic historical and meta-analytic review over the past 50 years.

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy studies employ different outcome measurement instruments (OMIs) for depression, which may limit the interpretability of meta-analytic findings. This meta-epidemiological study aimed to examine trends in OMI use in randomised controlled trials (RCTs) for depression, consistency of measurement practices over time, and their influence on meta-analytic effect estimates. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in four databases up to September 01, 2024. We included RCTs comparing psychotherapy to control conditions in adults with depression using OMIs for de

Firefighting and Cancer: A Meta-analysis of Cohort Studies in the Context of Cancer Hazard Identification.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a meta-analysis of epidemiological results for the association between occupational exposure as a firefighter and cancer as part of the broader evidence synthesis work of the IARCMonographs program. METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted to identify cohort studies of firefighters followed for cancer incidence and mortality. Studies were evaluated for the influence of key biases on results. Random-effects meta-analysis models were used to estimate the association between ever-employment and duration of employment as a firefighter and risk of 12 selected c

Impact of mobility restriction in COVID-19 superspreading events using agent-based model.

COVID-19 pandemic is an immediate major public health concern. The search for the understanding of the disease spreading made scientists around the world turn their attention to epidemiological studies. An interesting approach in epidemiological modeling nowadays is to use agent-based models, which allow to consider a heterogeneous population and to evaluate the role of superspreaders in this population. In this work, we implemented an agent-based model using probabilistic cellular automata to simulate SIR (Susceptible-Infected-Recovered) dynamics using COVID-19 infection parameters. Different

Position Paper on Post-Traumatic Headache: The Relationship Between Head Trauma, Stress Disorder, and Migraine.

Traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is a major public health concern, with mild TBI (mTBI) constituting the vast majority of the injuries. Post-traumatic headache (PTH) is one of the most frequent symptoms that follow a mTBI, occurring in isolation with a tension-type or migraine phenotype, or more often as part of a complex neurobehavioural array of symptoms. The existence of PTH as a separate entity from the primary headaches is still a matter of debate. Classification issues and a lack of methodologically robust epidemiological and clinical studies have made it difficult to elucidate the mechanis

Ambient air pollution exposures and risk of drug-resistant tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Few epidemiological studies have explored the effects of air pollution on the risk of drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). OBJECTIVE: To investigate the short and long term residential concentrations of ambient air pollutants (particulate matter <10 μm in diameter (PM10) and particulate matter≤2.5 μm in diameter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO)) in relation to the risk of DR-TB in a typical air pollution city, Jinan city, China. METHODS: A total of 752 new culture-confirmed TB cases reported in TB prevention and control i

Modernising epidemic science: enabling patient-centred research during epidemics.

BACKGROUND: Emerging and epidemic infectious disease outbreaks are a significant public health problem and global health security threat. As an outbreak begins, epidemiological investigations and traditional public health responses are generally mounted very quickly. However, patient-centred research is usually not prioritised when planning and enacting the response. Instead, the clinical research response occurs subsequent to and separate from the public health response, and is inadequate for evidence-based decision-making at the bedside or in the offices of public health policymakers. Legume consumption and its association with fasting glucose, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in the Indian Migration Study.

OBJECTIVE: Legume consumption is associated with lower fasting glucose (FG) and insulin levels in nutrition trials and lower CVD mortality in large-scale epidemiological studies. In India, legumes are widely consumed in various preparations, yet no epidemiological study has evaluated the association of legumes with FG levels, insulin resistance and diabetes risk. The present study aimed to fill this gap. DESIGN: Fasting blood samples, in-person interviews to obtain information on demographic/socio-economic factors, physical activity, alcohol and tobacco use, and anthropometric measurements we

Respiratory nematodes in cat populations of Italy.

The occurrence of common respiratory parasites of domestic cats (the metastrongyloid "cat lungworm" Aelurostrongylus abstrusus and the trichuroid Capillaria aerophila) and of neglected respiratory nematodes of felids (Troglostrongylus brevior, Angiostrongylus chabaudi and Oslerus rostratus) was here evaluated in two and three geographical sites of Northern and Central Italy, respectively. In 2014-2015, individual fecal samples of 868 domestic cats were examined microscopically and genetically, and epidemiological data related to parasitic infections were evaluated as possible risk factors by b

Vaccines for viral and bacterial pathogens causing acute gastroenteritis: Part I: Overview, vaccines for enteric viruses and Vibrio cholerae.

Efforts to develop vaccines for prevention of acute diarrhea have been going on for more than 40 y with partial success. The myriad of pathogens, more than 20, that have been identified as a cause of acute diarrhea throughout the years pose a significant challenge for selecting and further developing the most relevant vaccine candidates. Based on pathogen distribution as identified in epidemiological studies performed mostly in low-resource countries, rotavirus, Cryptosporidium, Shigella, diarrheogenic E. coli and V. cholerae are predominant, and thus the main targets for vaccine development a

Estimated effects of projected climate change on the basic reproductive number of the Lyme disease vector Ixodes scapularis.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which climate change may affect human health by increasing risk from vector-borne diseases has been under considerable debate. OBJECTIVES: We quantified potential effects of future climate change on the basic reproduction number (R0) of the tick vector of Lyme disease, Ixodes scapularis, and explored their importance for Lyme disease risk, and for vector-borne diseases in general. METHODS: We applied observed temperature data for North America and projected temperatures using regional climate models to drive an I. scapularis population model to hindcast recent, and

Regional white matter hyperintensity volume, not hippocampal atrophy, predicts incident Alzheimer disease in the community.

BACKGROUND New-onset Alzheimer disease (AD) is often attributed to degenerative changes in the hippocampus. However, the contribution of regionally distributed small vessel cerebrovascular disease, visualized as white matter hyperintensities (WMHs) on magnetic resonance imaging, remains unclear. OBJECTIVE To determine whether regional WMHs and hippocampal volume predict incident AD in an epidemiological study. DESIGN A longitudinal community-based epidemiological study of older adults from northern Manhattan, New York. SETTING The Washington Heights/Inwood Columbia Aging Project. PARTICIPANTS

A treatise on hazards of endocrine disruptors and tool to evaluate them.

Hormones mediate a major part of our essential physiological functions. Both endogenous and exogenous compounds and their metabolites are known to act through hormone receptors leading to regulation of endocrine function. The endogenous ligands that control reproductive functions are generally steroids such as 17beta-estradiol, androgens, progesterone, pregnenolone and glucocorticoids. However, exogenous compounds that are structurally and functionally similar gain entry into animals including humans through the diet or by occupational exposures, causing endocrine disruption. In the recent dec

The co-occurrence of congenital diaphragmatic hernia, esophageal atresia/tracheoesophageal fistula, and lung hypoplasia.

BACKGROUND: Two severe birth defects, congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) and esophageal atresia (EA) with or without tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF), have traditionally been analyzed separately in epidemiological studies. Lung hypoplasia (LH), part of the CDH spectrum, is not usually associated with EA/TEF, yet both are foregut malformations. METHODS: We conducted an epidemiological study of two combinations of the defects in the population of 3,318,966 live births and stillbirths monitored from 1983 to 1996 by the California Birth Defects Monitoring Program (CBDMP). RESULTS: A total of 4

Should deceased donors be tested for vCJD?

The 1997 Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy enquiry and the 2001 Hepatitis C litigation judgement set the UK scene for evoking the precautionary principle and the legal precedent that liability for defective transfusion products should not be dependent on medical negligence, but on the mere fact of defectiveness. Animal models indicate that vCJD in humans, with infection via the oral route, is likely to be associated with infectivity within the lymphoreticular system (LRS). This is likely to appear prior to the involvement of the central nervous system and thus infectivity is likely to be presen
