Vascular dysfunction and the age-related decline in critical power.

Ageing results in lower exercise tolerance, manifested as decreased critical power (CP). We examined whether the age-related decrease in CP occurs independently of changes in muscle mass and whether it is related to impaired vascular function. Ten older (63.1 ± 2.5 years) and 10 younger (24.4 ± 4.0 years) physically active volunteers participated. Physical activity was measured with accelerometry. Leg muscle mass was quantified with dual X-ray absorptiometry. The CP and maximum power during a graded exercise test (PGXT ) of single-leg knee-extension exercise were determined over the course of …

A single oral glucose load decreases arterial plasma [K+ ] during exercise and recovery.

AIM: We investigated whether acute carbohydrate ingestion reduced arterial potassium concentration ([K+ ]) during and after intense exercise and delayed fatigue. METHODS: In a randomized, double-blind crossover design, eight males ingested 300 ml water containing 75 g glucose (CHO) or placebo (CON); rested for 60 min, then performed high-intensity intermittent cycling (HIIC) at 130% V˙O2peak , comprising three 45-s exercise bouts (EB), then a fourth EB until fatigue. Radial arterial (a) and antecubital venous (v) blood was sampled at rest, before, during and after HIIC and analyzed for plasma

Medium-term effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on multiple vital organs, exercise capacity, cognition, quality of life and mental health, post-hospital discharge.

BACKGROUND: The medium-term effects of Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) on organ health, exercise capacity, cognition, quality of life and men … emonstrated impaired cognitive performance, specifically in the executive and visuospatial domains. Exercise tolerance (maximal oxygen consumption and ventilatory efficiency on CPET) and six-minute walk distance were significantly reduced. The extent of extra-pulmonary MRI abnormalities and exercise intolerance correlated with serum markers of inflammation and acute …

Effects of single bout of very high-intensity exercise on metabolic health biomarkers in overweight/obese sedentary men.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a single session of sprint interval training (SIT) and a single extended sprint (ES), matched for total work, on metabolic health biomarkers. METHODS: Ten overweight/obese men aged 26.9±6.2years participated. Following a pre-trial incremental exercise test and SIT familiarization, each participant undertook three 2-day trials in randomized order. On Day 1 participants either undertook no exercise (CON), four maximal 30-s sprints, with 4.5min recovery between each (SIT), or a single maximal extended sprint (ES) matched with SIT for work d

Acute administration of inorganic nitrate reduces VO(2peak) in endurance athletes.

PURPOSE: Humans can reduce inorganic nitrate (NO(3)(-)) to nitrite (NO(2)(-)), nitric oxide (NO), and other bioactive nitrogen oxides. The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that a single dose of inorganic nitrate before exercise might enhance the tolerance of endurance athletes to high intensity exercise. METHODS: Eleven cyclists (age = 34.3 ± 4.8 yr, VO(2peak) = 65.1 ± 6.2 mL·kg(-1)·min(-1)) participated in this randomized, double-blind, crossover study. Subjects received dietary supplementation with nitrate (NaNO(3) 10 mg·kg(-1) of body mass) or a placebo (NaCl) 3 h before ex

Cardiac performance in children with pectus excavatum.

Fourteen children with pectus excavatum and 14 normal control patients underwent graded exercise testing using a cycle ergometer and the Jam … hortened in the older pectus patients. It appears that children with pectus excavatum have a normal exercise tolerance and oxygen transport. However, older pectus children develop an increased diastolic BP and a shortened P/L and PEP in response to exercise.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

The Production of a Rat Model That Inhibits Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase (PEPCK), a Rate-Limiting Enzyme of Hepatic Gluconeogenesis.

We previously showed that taurine administration contributed to the extension of time to exhaustion through exercise-induced hypoglycemia restraint, and we suggested that the activation of hepatic gluconeogenesis was initiated before the exercise with the taurine administration. We hypothesize that the extension effect of exercise duration with the taurine administration is restrained in the rats which inhibited hepatic gluconeogenesis. In this study, we aimed to produce a rat model that inhibited hepatic gluconeogenesis as a first step in testing our hypothesis.F344 male rats of 8 weeks after

[A case of food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis caused by ingestion of orange].

The patient was a 10-year-old girl who presented with a history of anaphylactic episodes on three occasions, that developed in association with exercise after she ate citrus fruit. She underwent tolerance tests, as food-dependent exercise-induced anaphylaxis (FDEIA) induced by citrus fruit was suspected. The result of the test for the combination of intake of oranges and exercise was negative. The patient presented with swollen eyelid and wheezing following combined intake of orange and aspirin, based on which she was diagnosed as having FDEIA. Many patients developing an allergic reaction to

The pregnant altitude visitor.

The human fetus develops normally under low-oxygen conditions. Exposure of a pregnant woman to the hypoxia of high altitude results in acclimatization responses which act to preserve the fetal oxygen supply. The fetus also utilizes several compensatory mechanisms to survive brief periods of hypoxia. While fetal heart rate monitoring data during air travel suggest no compromise of fetal oxygenation, exercise at high altitude may place further stress on oxygen delivery to the fetus. The limited data on maternal exercise at high altitude suggest good tolerance in most pregnancies; however, short-

The induction and decay of heat acclimatisation in trained athletes.

Heat acclimatisation/acclimation involves a complex of adaptations which includes decreased heart rate, rectal temperature, perceived exertion as well as increased plasma volume and sweat rate. These adaptations serve to reduce physiological strain, improve an athlete's ability to exercise in a hot environment, and reduce the incidence of some forms of heat illness. Few differences exist in the ability of men and women to acclimatise to heat. Typically, older runners do not perform in the heat as well as younger runners, but physical training can negate differences between these groups. Hormon

The combination of exercise and psychedelics for the treatment of major depressive disorder.

Upwards of 50% of people do not respond to the primary treatment modalities for major depressive disorder (MDD), which has led to increased attention and use of alternative methods, including exercise and psychedelics. While interventions using either exercise or psychedelics have demonstrated largely positive results in isolation, their synergistic potential has yet to be explored. As such, this commentary provides an overview of exercise/psychedelics as a treatment for depression and their potential synergy and/or complementarity. From a biological perspective, psychedelics acutely enhance b

Cardiopulmonary Resilience in Highly Active Individuals: Pre-Post COVID-19 Cardiopulmonary Exercise Testing Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has affected millions globally, with persistent impacts extending beyond the acute phase. One such effect is post-COVID (long COVID), characterized by symptoms such as fatigue and exercise intolerance lasting more than 60 days. Although regular exercise is associated with reduced risk of severe outcomes, reports of decreased athletic performance after COVID-19 - even among highly active individuals (HAIs) - have raised concerns regarding the long-term effects on physical health. Cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET) is a valuable tool to assess exercise into
