Agenesis of the inferior vena cava in H syndrome due to a novel SLC29A3 mutation.

We present a 10-year-old girl with typical clinical features of H syndrome. Complete agenesis of the inferior vena cava was found on echocardiography and radiologic studies. Mutation analysis of the SLC29A3 gene revealed a novel nonsense mutation. This unique case extends the clinical and mutation spectrum associated with H syndrome and underlines the importance of routine cardiac screening in this disorder.

The H syndrome: a genodermatosis characterized by indurated, hyperpigmented, and hypertrichotic skin with systemic manifestations.

BACKGROUND: The association of cutaneous hyperpigmented, hypertrichotic, and indurated patches associated with hearing loss, short stature, cardiac anomalies, hepatosplenomegaly, scrotal masses, and hypogonadism has not, to our knowledge, been previously recognized as a disease entity. OBJECTIVE: We describe 10 patients with the above-mentioned findings. METHODS: Patients were clinically examined and extensive laboratory evaluation was performed. RESULTS: We describe 10 patients from 6 Arab consanguineous families with hyperpigmented, hypertrichotic, and indurated cutaneous patches involvin

Adverse effects from topical steroids.

The introduction of topical corticosteroids greatly expanded the practitioner's dermatologic armamentarium and at the same time augmented the list of local and systemic iatrogenic diseases with which he must deal. A recent review of the literature was undertaken to determine the adverse effects seen with topically administered corticosteroids. These were found to be arbitrarily assignable to eight categories: pilosebaceous, atrophic, therapeutic, immunologic, cosmetic, endocrinologic, oculonasal, and allergic. A brief discussion of the individual entities seen in each category as well as the e

Pulmonary hypertension secondary to partial pulmonary venous obstruction in a child with Cantu syndrome.

We report on an African-American male with Cantu syndrome who required a pericardial window for a significant pericardial effusion in infancy and was subsequently found to have partial pulmonary venous obstruction (PVO) leading to pulmonary hypertension. Measurement of bilateral pulmonary capillary wedge pressures is important to uncover partial PVO.

Retinal changes and tumorigenesis in Ramon syndrome: follow-up of a Brazilian family.

We report on the clinical evolution of the Brazilian family with Ramon syndrome described by de Pina-Neto et al. [1986, Am J Med Genet 25:441-443]. Three members (patients IV-2, IV-18, and IV-19) have developed pigmentary changes in the retina and paleness of the optic disk. Patient IV-18 also has developed giant hypertrophy of the labia minora that, when examined histopathologically, was found to be due to neoplastic fibroblast and epithelial proliferation caused by a fibromatous process similar to that reported in the gingivae of the patients with this syndrome. Audiologic function of patien

Erythrokeratodermia variabilis.

The case of a 10 year-old Japanese boy with erythrokeratodermia variabilis is reported in addition to a review of the Japanese literature. The patient was first examined in our clinic on October 21, 1965, because of generalized hyperkeratotic lesions and erythematous lesions which had persisted since he was 3 months old. Hyperkeratotic and verrucous lesions were noted on his auricles and trunk, on which there were also sharply demarcated erythematous lesions of various sizes and shapes which were not elevated from the adjacent skin. Laboratory findings were within normal limits. Histopathologi

KORSAKOFF'S SYNDROME ASSOCIATED WITH ADRENAL VIRILISM.

Korsakoff's syndrome of obscure etiology was observed in a 34-year-old single woman with an 11-year history of hirsutism and mood swings, and previous hospitalizations for mania three years ago and depression 11 years ago.Recently the virilism had intensified with increased muscularity and coarsening of facial features. The 24-hour urinary 17-ketosteroids ranged between 14.4 mg. and 21.5 mg. and were suppressed by dexamethasone. The 17-hydroxycorticosteroid excretion was normal. These and other findings suggested a diagnosis of adrenal virilism due to adrenocortical hyperplasia. In the absence

Clinical management of hereditary gingival fibromatosis: Case report with 13 years follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary gingival fibromatosis (HGF) is one of the categories of non-plaque-induced gingival diseases of genetic origin. Current studies show high genetic heterogeneity and suggest that not all forms of HGF are the same and that more than one biological mechanism may result in gingival growth. This report presents a case of syndromic HGF with generalized and complex clinical manifestations associated with other conditions such as body hypertrichosis and hearing deficit. METHODS: This is a case report of a male patient with HGF, detailing the orthodontic and periodontal managemen…

Pin1 is required for sustained B cell proliferation upon oncogenic activation of Myc.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to conduct school-based scoliosis screening among fifth-grade students and to determine the rate of sc … on or pain during breathing, and skin findings on the back (discoloration, large nevi, or localized hypertrichosis). CONCLUSIONS: This study determined that the screening positivity rate for suspected scoliosis among fifth-grade students was 11.0%. Factors that may be associated with scoliosis were found to be more common in female students; however, the multif …

Immunosuppressive Therapy with Cyclosporin A of Severe Treatment Refractory Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis is severe destructive inflammatory joint disease which usually leads to invalidisation of patient in spite of current t … ber of corticosteroid injections were reduced (p < 0.05). Adverse effects of Cyclosporin A included hypertrichosis, gingivitis, increase in appetite and weight, transitory increase in creatinin serum level of 30% over baseline, relapse of bacterial viral infection. These patients required temporal withdrawal of Cyclosporin A. It is concluded that Cyclosporin A t …

[POEMS syndrome].

POEMS syndrome has been defined as an association of plasma cell dyscrasia with polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, M protein and … ulin (IgG or IgA), almost always with a light lambda chain. Skin changes include hyperpigmentation, hypertrichosis, hyperhidrosis, thickening of the skin suggestive of sclerodermia and papillary angiomas. Other signs, especially peripheral oedema often occur early in the disease course and may precede the peripheral neuropathy. POEMS syndrome is often associated …
