Examining the functional activity of different obsessive-compulsive symptom dimensions in Tourette syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Tourette syndrome (TS) is commonly comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and many phenomenological similarities exist between tics and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS). Therefore, due to the clinical importance of comorbid OCD, the goal of this study was to investigate the neural substrates of OCS in TS using functional magnetic resonance imaging. METHODS: Forty patients with TS and 20 healthy controls underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging while viewing blocks of OCS-provoking pictures relating to washing, checking and symmetry symptoms, as well as general

pyKNEEr: An image analysis workflow for open and reproducible research on femoral knee cartilage.

Transparent research in musculoskeletal imaging is fundamental to reliably investigate diseases such as knee osteoarthritis (OA), a chronic disease impairing femoral knee cartilage. To study cartilage degeneration, researchers have developed algorithms to segment femoral knee cartilage from magnetic resonance (MR) images and to measure cartilage morphology and relaxometry. The majority of these algorithms are not publicly available or require advanced programming skills to be compiled and run. However, to accelerate discoveries and findings, it is crucial to have open and reproducible workflow

Use of artificial intelligence in imaging in rheumatology - current status and future perspectives.

After decades of basic research with many setbacks, artificial intelligence (AI) has recently obtained significant breakthroughs, enabling computer programs to outperform human interpretation of medical images in very specific areas. After this shock wave that probably exceeds the impact of the first AI victory of defeating the world chess champion in 1997, some reflection may be appropriate on the consequences for clinical imaging in rheumatology. In this narrative review, a short explanation is given about the various AI techniques, including 'deep learning', and how these have been applied

Clinical Application of Real-Time Shear Wave Elastography in Identifying the Histological Components of Parotid Adenolymphoma.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the elastic modulus and the histological components of parotid adenolymphoma by using real-time shear wave elastography. METHODS: A total of 157 patients, histologically confirmed as having parotid adenolymphoma, were enrolled in the study. The maximum and the mean elastic modulus of the parotid mass were measured by using preoperative shear wave elastography. Parotid adenolymphoma was histopathologically subdivided into different types based on the relative proportion of stromal to cellular components. RESULTS: The maximal

Reduced subarachnoid fluid diffusion in enlarged subarachnoid spaces of infancy.

Background and purpose Enlargement of the subarachnoid spaces in infancy (ESSI) is a common cause of macrocephaly without proven explanation. We have observed subarachnoid diffusion to be decreased in these patients. We aim to quantify the diffusivity of ventricular and subarachnoid cerebrospinal fluid in ESSI patients, to determine if diffusion characteristics deviate from normocephalic infants, and to propose a unique mechanism for ESSI. Materials and methods 227 consecutive brain magnetic resonance exams from different macrocephalic children were retrospectively reviewed after institutional

Assessing Cartilage Biomechanical Properties: Techniques for Evaluating the Functional Performance of Cartilage in Health and Disease.

Osteoarthritis (OA) affects millions of people and results in weakened hyaline cartilage due to overloading. During joint articulation, hyaline cartilage must withstand high loads while maintaining low friction to prevent wear and tissue loss. Thus, cartilage compressive stiffness and the coefficient of friction are important indicators of the tissue's functional performance. These mechanical properties are often measured ex vivo using mechanical testing regimens, but arthroscopic handheld probes (e.g., for indentation testing, ultrasound, and optical coherence tomography) and noninvasive imag

Spatially dense morphometrics of craniofacial sexual dimorphism in 1-year-olds.

Recent advances in the field of geometric morphometrics allow for powerful statistical hypothesis testing for effects of biological and environmental variables on anatomical shape. This study used partial least-squares regression (PLSR) and the recently developed bootstrapped response-based imputation modelling (BRIM) algorithm to test for sexual dimorphism in the craniofacial shape of 1-year-old humans. We observed a recession of the forehead in boys relative to girls, and differences in the nose, consistent with adult dimorphism. Results also suggest that the degree to which individuals expr

Assessment of left ventricular hemodynamic forces in healthy subjects and patients with dilated cardiomyopathy using 4D flow MRI.

We hypothesized that the direction of global left ventricular (LV) hemodynamic forces during diastolic filling are concordant with the main flow axes in normal LVs, but that this pattern would be altered in dilated and dysfunctional LVs. Therefore, we aimed to assess the LV hemodynamic filling forces in a group of healthy subjects and compare them to the results from a group of patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Ten healthy subjects and 10 DCM patients were enrolled. Morphological short- (SAx) and long-axis (LAx) images and 4D flow MRI data were acquired at 1.5T. The LV pressure gradi

Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy Using a Portable, Noncontact, Nonmydriatic Handheld Retinal Camera.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of low vision and blindness. We evaluated the feasibility of using a handheld, noncontact digital retinal camera, Pictor, to obtain retinal images in dilated and undilated eyes for DR screening. We also evaluated the accuracy of ophthalmologists with different levels of training/experience in grading these images to identify eyes with vision-threatening DR. METHODS: A prospective study of diabetic adults scheduled to have dilated eye exams at Duke Eye Center from January to May 2014 was conducted. An imager acquired retinal images pre-

Medial Longitudinal Arch Angle Presents Significant Differences Between Foot Types: A Biplane Fluoroscopy Study.

The structure of the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) affects the foot's overall function and its ability to dissipate plantar pressure forces. Previous research on the MLA includes measuring the calcaneal-first metatarsal angle using a static sagittal plane radiograph, a dynamic height-to-length ratio using marker clusters with a multisegment foot model, and a contained angle using single point markers with a multisegment foot model. The objective of this study was to use biplane fluoroscopy to measure a contained MLA angle between foot types: pes planus (low arch), pes cavus (high arch), and n

Association of regional gray matter volumes in the brain with disruptive behavior disorders in male and female children.

Because the disruptive behavior disorders are highly impairing conditions, it is important to determine if structural variations in brain are associated early in life with these problems among children. Structural MRI data were acquired from 111 9-11 year olds (58 girls and 53 boys), 43 who met diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder and/or conduct disorder and 68 healthy controls. Voxel-based morphometry was used to examine associations of behavioral measures with gray matter volumes in whole-brain analyses. Unlike previous studies, variation in gray matter volume was not found

Neural correlates of cerebellar-mediated timing during finger tapping in children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Classical eyeblink conditioning (EBC), an elemental form of learning, is among the most sensitive indicators of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders. The cerebellum plays a key role in maintaining timed movements with millisecond accuracy required for EBC. Functional MRI (fMRI) was used to identify cerebellar regions that mediate timing in healthy controls and the degree to which these areas are also recruited in children with prenatal alcohol exposure. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: fMRI data were acquired during an auditory rhythmic/non-rhythmic finger tapping task. We present results for 17

High resolution MRI difference between moyamoya disease and intracranial atherosclerosis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Along with intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD), moyamoya disease (MMD) is the most common cause of middle cerebral artery (MCA) occlusion in Asians. Although they have differing vascular wall pathologies, conventional angiographic evaluation methods cannot easily differentiate MMD from ICAD in certain situations, such as in young patients with atherosclerotic risk factors. High resolution magnetic resonance imaging (HR-MRI) findings for the diseased segments of MCAs in MMD and symptomatic ICAD were compared to further elucidate differences in arterial wall chang

Computer-aided diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis with optical tomography, Part 1: feature extraction.

This is the first part of a two-part paper on the application of computer-aided diagnosis to diffuse optical tomography (DOT). An approach for extracting heuristic features from DOT images and a method for using these features to diagnose rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are presented. Feature extraction is the focus of Part 1, while the utility of five classification algorithms is evaluated in Part 2. The framework is validated on a set of 219 DOT images of proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints. Overall, 594 features are extracted from the absorption and scattering images of each joint. Three major

Magnetic resonance imaging in E200K and V210I mutations of the prion protein gene.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR), is a useful diagnostic investigation for Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Amendment of the diagnostic criteria for sporadic CJD (sCJD) to include defined MRI alterations has just recently been proposed. We analyzed MRI scans with FLAIR and/or DWI available of 29 patients with the E200K or the V210I mutation, and a control group of 29 sCJD patients to compare the MRI lesion profile and evaluate the applicability of new MRI criteria to genetic CJD patients. FLAIR images of all

Combined structural and resting-state functional MRI analysis of sexual dimorphism in the young adult human brain: an MVPA approach.

There has been growing interest recently in the use of multivariate pattern analysis (MVPA) to decode information from high-dimensional neuroimaging data. The present study employed a support vector machine-based MVPA approach to identify the complex patterns of sex differences in brain structure and resting-state function. We also aimed to assess the role of anatomy on functional sex differences during rest. One hundred and forty healthy young Chinese adults (70 men and 70 women) underwent structural and resting-state functional MRI scans. Gray matter density and regional homogeneity (ReHo) w

Clinical implications of skeletal muscle blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) MRI.

Blood-oxygenation-level-dependent (BOLD) contrast in magnetic resonance (MR) imaging of skeletal muscle mainly depends on changes of oxygen saturation in the microcirculation. In recent years, an increasing number of studies have evaluated the clinical relevance of skeletal muscle BOLD MR imaging in vascular diseases, such as peripheral arterial occlusive disease, diabetes mellitus, and chronic compartment syndrome. BOLD imaging combines the advantages of MR imaging, i.e., high spatial resolution, no exposure to ionizing radiation, with functional information of local microvascular perfusion.
