OBJECTIVE: To analyze the trends of colorectal polyps for age ≥ 50 years male healthcare patients during a long-term colonoscopic follow-up.
METHODS: Endoscopic and pathological reports of age ≥ 50 years male healthcare patients undergoing colonoscopy from April 1983 to April 2013 were retrospectively reviewed and their general data collected. The proportion of different histological types, the distribution at different anatomic sites and the trends of size and number of colorectal polyps during different follow-up years were analyzed.

Inflammatory fibroid polyps or Vanek's tumors are rare benign pseudotumoral lesions with morphological characteristics similar to those of submucosal mesenchymal tumors. They have been described in the gastrointestinal tract, most frequently in the gastric antrum. We present a case of ileal Vanek's tumor associated with a raised carcinoembryonic antigen level and with radiological and endoscopic features mimicking cecal carcinoma.

A 53-year-old woman presented with symptoms of weight loss, diarrhea, and melena. A barium enema with endoscopy revealed multiple colonic polyps which were shown histologically to be metastatic deposits of poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. The primary tumor, a poorly differentiated gastric adenocarcinoma, had been resected 11 years earlier. This appears to be only the second published report of polypoid colonic metastases from gastric adenocarcinoma.

One hundred and eight male Egyptian farmers with schistosomal colonic polyposis were reviewed. All patients gave a history of bloody diarrhoea. Sixty-one patients presented with finger clubbing, and four of these patients had painful, tender and swollen wrist, knee and ankle joints. Colonoscopy was carried out in 65 patients in whom double-contrast barium enemas for bowel symptoms had shown sigmoid diverticular disease. In 19 of these, barium enemas had shown neoplastic lesions--polyps in 17 and carcinoma in 2; but colonoscopy showed no polyps in 9 of the 17. In 1 a carcinoma not a polyp was found, and of the 2 carcinomas only 1 was confirmed. In 46 patients the barium enemas showed diverticular disease only, but colonoscopy revealed polyps in 8 and carcinoma in 3. Two cases of benign tumours complicating ureterosigmoidostomy are described. The latent period between diversion and the development of tumour is long and careful follow-up of patients with ureterosigmoidostomy is recommended. It would seem highly probable that adenomatous polyps developing at the site of anastomosis may, if undetected, undergo malignant change to adenocarcinoma. All of the tumours recorded following ureterosigmoid diversion have been associated with a nipple type ureterocolic anastomosis and mucosa-to-mucosa anastomosis may possibly prevent this complication.
