Immunosuppressive syndrome in juvenile black-faced ibises (Theristicus melanopis melanopis) in southern Chile.

In the austral summer of 2011, in the rural area of Villarrica county, southern Chile (39 degrees 16'S, 72 degrees 19'W), seven black-faced ibis juveniles (approximately 4 mo old) were observed in the field with weakness; they were unable to follow the group and struggling to take flight. Three of these birds were euthanatized, and complete necropsies were performed. Gross examination showed severe infestation with Colpocephalum trispinum and Ardeicola melanopis lice, moderate emaciation, pale musculature, bursal atrophy, and severe hemorrhagic enteritis due to a heavy proventricular and intes

Transcriptome profiling of the early developmental stages in the giant mussel Choromytilus chorus exposed to delousing drugs.

The giant mussel Choromytilus chorus is a marine bivalve commonly collected in central - southern Chile from fishery zones shared with the salmon industry. These economically relevant areas are also affected by the use of pesticides for controlling sea lice infestations in salmon aquaculture. Their main target is the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi. However, other than some physiological impacts, the molecular effects of delousing drugs in non-target species such as C. chorus remain largely understudied. This study aimed to explore the transcriptome modulation of Trochophore and D larvae stage…

Bioaccumulation of selected veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis).

Veterinary medicinal products (VMPs) are widely used within the fish farming industry to control sea lice infestations. There is concern that wild and farmed mussels in the vicinity to these fish farms may be exposed and subsequently bioaccumulate these chemicals, which could pose a threat to human health. To understand the fate of these chemicals in the environment, controlled laboratory exposures were performed to establish the uptake and depuration of selected VMPs in the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis). The VMPs included teflubenzuron, emamectin benzoate and deltamethrin. The effects of salin…

Efficacy of ivermectin in a topical formulation against induced gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections, and naturally acquired grubs and lice in cattle.

Efficacy of ivermectin in a topical formulation was evaluated in cattle against adult gastrointestinal and pulmonary nematode infections (experiment 1, n = 24), the 2nd- and 3rd-stage larvae of Hypoderma spp (experiment 2, n = 12), and the biting louse Damalinia bovis (experiment 3, n = 12). Nematode infections were induced and grubs and lice were naturally acquired. Treatments consisted of a single dose of ivermectin in a topical formulation of 200, 500, or 1,000 micrograms/kg of body weight in experiment 1 or 500 micrograms/kg in experiments 2 and 3. At 1,000 micrograms/kg, ivermectin was 10

Molecular detection and genetic analysis of Rickettsia, Ehrlichia, and Bartonella in ectoparasites from domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico.

Tick- and flea-borne diseases, including rickettsiosis, bartonellosis, and ehrlichiosis, have increased in incidence globally in recent years, affecting both humans and animals. Although the circulation of these pathogens has been documented in Mexico, information from the state of Sinaloa remains limited. Despite environmental conditions that favor zoonotic transmission, the diversity of dog ectoparasites and the pathogens they harbor remains poorly studied. This study aimed to determine the frequency of the main ectoparasites infesting domestic dogs in Sinaloa, Mexico, and to molecularly and

Psocoptera spp. (book louse): a new major household allergen in Mumbai.

BACKGROUND: Exposure and sensitization to indoor allergens of house dust mites and insects is well established. However, there are no reports on the allergenicity of Psocoptera spp. (book louse). These insects are known to inhabit various terrestrial habitats such as tree bark (bark lice), old papers, books, stored food products, etc and gain entry into human dwellings through these modes. They have the potential to sensitize individuals with an occupational exposure to them. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to use clinical and immunologic techniques to evaluate the extent of sensitization to Psoc

Novel knockdown resistance mutations in human lice: artifacts or emerging resistance?

An exceptionally high number of novel mutations within domain II of the voltage-gated sodium channel have been reported in human lice from Iran and Saudi Arabia. We critically evaluate these reports, highlighting that many of them may be methodological artifacts, and urge rigorous confirmation before assigning biological significance.

First report of classical knockdown resistance (kdr) mutation, L1014F, in human head louse Pediculus humanus capitis (Phthiraptera: Anoplura).

There are at least three known knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations reported globally in the human head louse Pediculus humanus capitis De Geer (Phthiraptera: Anoplura) that are associated with reduced sensitivity to pyrethroids. However, the prevalence of kdr mutation in head lice is not known in the Indian subcontinent. To identify kdr mutations in the Indian head lice population, the genomic region of the voltage-gated sodium channel gene encompassing IIS1-2 linker to IIS6 segments was PCR-amplified and sequenced from P. humanus capitis samples collected from different geographic localities

Evidence for idiothetic and allothetic control of thermo-orientation in feather-feeding lice.

Thermal cues are widely used by ectoparasites to find and exploit hosts. Recently, the wing louse Columbicola columbae (Phthiraptera: Ischnocera) was shown to use thermo-orientation when migrating between host microhabitats. Here, we study the control systems governing thermo-orientation by motion tracking wing lice on spatial and temporal heat gradients. As previously demonstrated, lice placed on spatial heat gradients successfully located nearby heat targets. Unilateral antennectomies were then used to remove spatial aspects of the thermal cue. These lice were still capable of locating heat

A Rare Case of Blebharitis: Phthiriasis Palpebrarum.

A six-year-old male patient was admitted to our hospital due to itching and scalding crusts that persisted 10-15 days in both eyes. Upon biomicroscopic examination, 5-6 semi-translucent, yellowish brown living lice attached to the upper eyelashes and a large number of eggs were observed. Following application of pilocarpine hydrochloride (Pilomann 2%, Bausch-Lomb) and topical proparacaine hydrochloride (Alcaine 0.5%, Alcon), the paralyzed parasites and eggs were manually removed by pulling with forceps. The lice were identified as adult forms of pubic louse, Pthirus pubis, and its eggs. The pa
