The added value of trace DNA in an investigative context.

Traces (remnants of a past event under scrutiny) provide a great deal of useful information, however many aspects of selection and recovery need further exploration. The increased use of trace DNA has prompted extensive research into recovery rates of DNA profiles from various surfaces and collection methods. While recovery rates inform trace targeting, the utility of a profile reflects its actual contribution to an investigation. Utility is defined as the added value the use of a trace provides to an investigation, which if measured would increase knowledge for trace selection and analysis. T

Latex allergy and medical aspects of the use of latex products.

Injuries of the upper cervical spine represent 1/3 of all cervical spine injuries and approximately 40 % result by the death. Every level of the cervical spine can be injured - fractures of condyles of the occipital bone (CO), atlantooccipital dislocation (AOD), fractures of the Atlas (C1), atlantoaxial dislocation (AAD) and fractures of the axis (C2). Most of cases in younger patients are caused by high-energy trauma, while by elderly people, because of the osteoporosis, is needed much less energy and even simple falls can cause the injury of the cervical spine. That´s why the etiology of inj

Concomitant Distal Radius Fracture with Scaphoid Fracture-Dislocation and Carpal Instability: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Concomitant ipsilateral fractures of the distal radius and scaphoid are uncommon and are typically associated with high-energy trauma. The combination of a comminuted intra-articular distal radius fracture with scaphoid fracture-dislocation and carpal instability represents a particularly rare and complex injury pattern. Early recognition of associated carpal injuries is important to restore and maintain anatomical alignment. CASE REPORT: A 32-year-old right-hand-dominant man presented with severe pain, swelling, and deformity of the left wrist following a high-energy motorcycle

Traumatic Asymmetric Bilateral Shoulder Dislocation: The First Case Report in Mexico.

INTRODUCTION: Asymmetric bilateral shoulder dislocation is an exceptionally rare pattern of glenohumeral injury characterized by simultaneous dislocation of both shoulders in different directions. Since its first description in 1985, only a limited number of cases have been reported worldwide. Most cases are associated with seizures or electrical injuries, while traumatic mechanisms are uncommon. Reporting additional cases is important to improve recognition and management of this unusual injury pattern. CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 39-year-old Hispanic male who presented to the emerg

When Life-Threatening Injuries Overshadow Soft Tissue Trauma: A Missed Morel-Lavallée Lesion.

Morel-Lavallée lesions are closed, shearing injuries that occur in polytrauma patients, most commonly affecting the thigh, hip, and pelvis due to mobile skin over thick fascia. These lesions are often missed upon initial evaluation due to the severity of accompanying traumatic injuries and the focus on life-threatening conditions. We present a case of a missed Morel-Lavallée lesion in a Level 1 trauma patient and our innovative approach to treatment. A 36-year-old female patient was air-transported to the emergency department after a motorcycle accident, where she was struck by a vehicle. She

Simultaneous Cesarean Delivery and Pelvic Stabilization for Open-Book Pelvic Injury in Late Pregnancy: A Case Report.

Trauma during pregnancy poses a dual threat to the mother and fetus, and disruption of the pelvic ring is among the most challenging injuries a trauma team can encounter in this population. Altered maternal physiology, the presence of a gravid uterus, and concerns regarding fetal radiation exposure all complicate assessment and surgical planning. Evidence to guide management is limited, leaving the sequencing of delivery and skeletal stabilization largely dependent on case-by-case clinical judgment. A 26-year-old woman (gravida 3, para 2) at 35 weeks and 5 days of gestation sustained these inj

Whole-body vibration exposure and its predictors among food delivery riders in eastern Peninsular Malaysia.

BACKGROUND: Chronic exposure to whole-body vibration (WBV) is a significant contributor to work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among motorcyclists. In Malaysia, these riders experience a higher prevalence of WMSDs compared to non-occupational motorcyclists. This study aimed to quantify WBV exposure among food delivery riders in Eastern Peninsular Malaysia and to identify predictors of WBV exposure exceeding the Exposure Action Value (EAV) as defined by the EU Vibration Protection Directive 2002/44/EC. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 191 food delivery riders in

Free Functional Muscle Transfer in Brachial Plexus Injury Patients With Subclavian Artery Injury Using Arteriovenous Loop Grafts.

BACKGROUND: Free functional muscle transfer (FFMT) for brachial plexus injury (BPI) requires adequate donor arterial flow for successful anastomosis. However, concomitant BPI and subclavian artery injury are not uncommon. Arteriovenous (AV) loop graft is one of the methods used to extend vessels to areas with vascular depletion. This case series aims to report the feasibility and outcomes of AV loop grafts for FFMT in BPI patients with subclavian artery injury. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This longitudinal descriptive report included adult patients with BPI and concomitant subclavian artery injury.

Robotic-Assisted Laparoscopic Repair of Petit's Hernia With Preperitoneal Mesh.

Lumbar hernias are rare abdominal wall hernias that occur in the posterolateral abdominal wall. Intra-peritoneal or extra-peritoneal contents typically protrude through defects in one of two anatomical triangles. The superior lumbar triangle (Grynfeltt-Lesshaft triangle) is an inverted triangle bordered by the 12th rib superiorly, the internal oblique muscle laterally, and the erector spinae muscle medially. The inferior lumbar triangle (Petit's triangle) is an upright triangle bordered by the iliac crest inferiorly, the external oblique muscle laterally, and the latissimus dorsi muscle medial

Pediatric Acute Compartment Syndrome in Long Bone Fractures: Who is at Risk?

INTRODUCTION: There is a paucity of large-scale data on the factors that suggest an impending or underlying extremity pediatric acute compartment syndrome (ACS). In addition, literature regarding the timing of operative fixation and the risk of ACS is mixed. We aimed to describe the factors associated with pediatric ACS. METHODS: Analysis of 2017-2019 Trauma Quality Improvement Program. We included patients aged <18 y diagnosed with upper extremity (UE) and lower extremity (LE) fractures. Burns and insect bites/stings were excluded. Multivariable regression analyses were performed to identify

Subclavian arterial rupture due to blunt trauma injury: A case report.

RATIONALE: Subclavian arterial injury due to blunt trauma is rare but can have devastating outcomes. Massive hemorrhage or limb ischemia might develop depending on the extent of damage, and open repair might be necessary to salvage the limb. However, life-saving treatments should be prioritized in critically unstable patients. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 21-year-old male patient who was transferred to our trauma center following a motorcycle accident. Abdominal and chest computed tomography (CT) revealed right renal injury and massive hemothorax with several rib fractures in the right chest. DIAGNOS

A Case of Closed Pilon Fracture Resulting in Soft-Tissue Necrosis and Treated with Reverse Sural Artery Flap and Circular External Fixation.

Tibial pilon fractures are difficult to treat due to articular comminution and soft-tissue injuries caused by high-energy trauma. Open reduction and internal fixation is a commonly used method of treatment. However, it has a high risk of infection and soft-tissue complications due to the extensive detachment of soft tissue. We report on a case with a tibial pilon fracture and soft-tissue necrosis that we treated using limited internal fixation combined with a circular external fixator (LIFCEF) and reverse sural artery flap (RSAF) as part of an orthoplastic approach within the orthopedic surger
