Comparison of pathological response of standard chemoradiotherapy versus short course radiotherapy in rectal carcinoma: A pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Neoadjuvant chemoradiation (CRT) is standard of care for locally advanced rectal cancer. However short course radiotherapy (SCRT) was developed for the benefit of a shorter treatment duration and early surgical intervention which also helped in reducing the case burden to the hospital. SCRT is routinely practised in European countries, Indian experience with the SCRT is limited and hence a pilot study was conducted to compare the morphological difference and pathological response between SCRT and CRT. OBJECTIVES: A) Evaluate the morphological changes and pathological response be

Partial-Length Treatment With Brachytherapy in Patients With Endometrial Cancer With High-Risk Features Is as Effective as Full-Length Vaginal Brachytherapy but With Reduced Toxicity.

PURPOSE: Full-length vaginal (FLV) brachytherapy for patients with endometrial cancer and high-risk features should be considered as per the American Brachytherapy Society to reduce distal vaginal recurrence in patients with endometrial cancers with papillary serous/clear cell histologies, grade 3 status, or extensive lymphovascular invasion. We sought to investigate this patient population and report outcomes of treatment with high-dose-rate (HDR) brachytherapy in women treated with FLV brachytherapy versus partial-length vaginal (PLV) brachytherapy. METHODS AND MATERIALS: With institutional

Individualized conditional survival nomograms for stage I-III early onset colorectal cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Conditional survival accounts for the time already survived after surgery and provides additional survival information. The aim was to assess conditional survival in stages I-III early onset colorectal cancer patients and to create nomograms predicting the conditional overall survival and cancer-specific survival after surgery. METHODS: A total of 7058 patients who underwent surgical resection of early onset colorectal cancer were identified from surveillance, epidemiology and end results database. The formula used for conditional survival calculation was conditional survival(x|y)

Diagnostic Accuracy of Deep Learning and Radiomics in Lung Cancer Staging: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence has far surpassed previous related technologies in image recognition and is increasingly used in medical image analysis. We aimed to explore the diagnostic accuracy of the models based on deep learning or radiomics for lung cancer staging. METHODS: Studies were systematically reviewed using literature searches from PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Wanfang Database, according to PRISMA guidelines. Studies about the diagnostic accuracy of radiomics and deep learning, including the identifications of lung cancer, tumor types, malignant lung nodules and lymp

Total neoadjuvant therapy for the treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer: a systematic minireview.

Colorectal carcinoma is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths, and indeed, rectal cancer accounting for approximately one third of newly diagnosed patients. Gold standard in the treatment of rectal cancer is a multimodality approach, aiming at a good control of the local disease. Distant recurrences are the major cause of mortality. Currently, Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer (LARC) patients undergo a combined treatment of chemotherapy and radiotherapy, followed by surgery. Eventually, more chemotherapy, namely adjuvant chemotherapy (aCT), may be necessary. Total Neoadjuvant Therapy

Impact of surgical resection for gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) patients with initially diagnosed synchronous hepatic metastases on long-term survival outcomes.

BACKGROUND: The effect of surgical resection on the long-term outcome of GIST patients with initially diagnosed synchronous hepatic metastases in the targeted therapy era is still uncertain. The main aims of this study were to investigate the role of surgery in the treatment of these patients and establish clinical predictive models for assessing prognosis. METHODS: We identified these patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database between 2010 and 2018. The selection bias in comparisons was minimized by performing propensity score matching (PSM). The risk factor

Real-World Evidence Shows Clinicians Appropriately Use the Prognostic 40-Gene Expression Profile (40-GEP) Test for High-Risk Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma (cSCC) Patients.

Treatment decisions for patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) are traditionally based upon clinicopathologic risk factors and staging systems. Due to the accuracy limitations of these resources in predicting poor outcomes, there is a clinically significant need for more accurate methods of risk assessment. The 40-gene expression profile (40-GEP) test was developed to augment metastatic risk prediction of high-risk cSCC patients and has been validated in two independent, multi-center studies involving over 1,000 patients. This study substantiates that the 40-GEP is appropriatel

Tumour-stroma ratio to predict pathological response to neo-adjuvant treatment in rectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Management of rectal cancer has advanced, with an increasing use of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (nCRT). This opens options for organ preserving treatment for those with a major response to nCRT. However, the degree of clinical response, based on MRI and post-treatment biopsies, only poorly matches the degree of actual pathological response. In order to select patients with major pathological response without surgical resection, it is of importance to define tumour markers predicting the degree of pathological response to nCRT. The intra-tumoural tumour-stroma ratio (TSR) might

[Larynx preservation: recommendations for decision-making in T3 laryngeal cancer patients].

BACKGROUND: By today's standard, the optimal treatment of every individual tumor patient is discussed and determined in an interdisciplinary tumor board. According to the new S3 guidelines, larger volume T3 laryngeal cancers which are no longer safely resectable with larynx-sparing surgery are ideal candidates for a larynx preservation approach using primary chemoradiation (pCRT). So far, no clear criteria have been defined under what circumstances primary radiotherapy alone (pRT) might be acceptable in case chemotherapy (CT) is prohibited or in what cases, even in T3, upfront total laryngecto

High-dose radiotherapy and risk-adapted androgen deprivation in localised prostate cancer (DART 01/05): 10-year results of a phase 3 randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The optimal duration of androgen deprivation combined with high-dose radiotherapy in prostate cancer remains controversial. The DART 01/05 trial was designed to determine whether long-term androgen deprivation is superior to short-term androgen deprivation when combined with high-dose radiotherapy. The 5-year results showed that 2 years of adjuvant androgen deprivation combined with high-dose radiotherapy significantly improved biochemical control, metastasis, and overall survival, especially in patients with high-risk disease. In this report, we present the 10-year final results o

CRP Levels as a Prognostic Factor in Mycosis Fungoides.

Mycosis Fungoides (MF) and Sézary syndrome (SS) are the most common forms of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Few validated prognostic factors have been reported in MF/SS, especially when compared with non-cutaneous lymphomas. Increased C-reactive protein (CRP) levels have recently been associated with poor clinical outcome in various malignancies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prognostic significance of serum CRP levels at diagnosis in patients with MF/SS. This retrospective study included 76 patients with MF/SS. Stage was assigned according to the ISCL/EORTC guidelines. The follow-up
