The abuse of food of carnivores (meat) by phylogeneticallyI herbivorous Homo sapiens (a patient) initiates atherosclerosis. Addressing biogenetic law of E. Haeckel that ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny (a universal anamnesis), we suggest a diagnostic technique that allows evaluation of the meat diet abuse by a herbivorous Homo sapiens. This technique is based on application of phylogenetic theory of general pathology to clinical practice. The degrees of objective evaluation of nonphysiological overeating of meat are: the first, an increase in the fast plasma content of oleic triglycerides palm

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a progressive degenerative joint disease characterized by chronic inflammation, cartilage degradation, and persistent pain, leading to functional disability and reduced quality of life. Current pharmacological treatments, particularly non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), provide symptomatic relief but are associated with significant adverse effects during long-term use. The present study evaluated the therapeutic efficacy and pharmacological synergy of a novel combination formulation, Ostizeel™, comprising palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) and Cucumis sa

Inland heatwaves (HW) are increasingly recognised as potent environmental stressors affecting aquatic ecosystems. This study investigated the physiological, biochemical, and molecular stress responses in juvenile GIFT (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to simulated short-term (STHW) and long-term (LTHW) heatwave conditions. A total of 144 fish (15.79 ± 0.21 g) were randomly assigned to three treatment groups-control, STHW, and LTHW-with four replicates each. At the end of each experimental heatwave exposure, parameters such as survival, physio-biochemical responses from different organs, serum, a

Metabolic reprogramming, impaired mitochondrial quality control, and mitochondrial redox imbalance are increasingly recognized as central drivers of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH). Spermidine (SPD) has been reported to exert cardiovascular protective effects; however, its effects on endothelial metabolism and redox homeostasis in PAH remain incompletely characterized. HADHA, the α-subunit of mitochondrial trifunctional protein, participates in long-chain fatty acid β-oxidation (FAO) and provides a potential link between fatty acid utilization, mitochondrial respiration, mitophagy-relate

BACKGROUND: The preservation of the Lingguizhugan (LGZG) decoction and patient compliance issue often limit the treatment of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Hence, herein, an LGZG oral solution was developed for alleviating MASLD. Additionally, the potential mechanisms underlying LGZG-mediated MASLD mitigation were explored.
METHODS: A MASLD mouse model was constructed using oleic and palmitic acid-induced LO2 cells and a high-fat diet. The apoptosis, lipid deposition, and mouse liver function were analyzed to assess the therapeutic effects of the LGZG oral s

Various sebum free fatty acids (FFAs) have shown antibacterial activity against a broad range of gram-positive bacteria, resulting in the suggestion that they are accountable, at least partially, for the direct antimicrobial activity of the skin surface. In this study, we examined the effects of sebum FFAs on the antimicrobial peptide (AMP)-mediated innate immune defense of human sebocytes. Incubation of lauric acid, palmitic acid, or oleic acid (OA) with human sebocytes dramatically enhanced their expression of human beta-defensin (hBD)-2, one of the predominant AMPs found in the skin, wherea

Skin aging is a complex process influenced by intrinsic and extrinsic factors, leading to structural and functional changes such as reduced elasticity and increased wrinkles. This study aims to evaluate the potential biological functions of Magic vitamin A (MVA) in skin health management and skin aging through metabolomics analysis. We performed untargeted metabolomics analysis using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to explore the changes in metabolites and related metabolic pathways induced by MVA in HaCaT cells. This suggests that MVA treatment substantially alters t

Palmitoylethanolamide (PEA, N-hexadecanoylethanolamide) is an endogenous compound belonging to the family of N-acylethanolamines. PEA has anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties and is very well tolerated in humans. In the present article, the basal pharmacology of PEA is reviewed. In terms of its pharmacokinetic properties, most work has been undertaken upon designing formulations for its absorption and upon characterising the enzymes involved in its metabolism, but little is known about its bioavailability, tissue distribution, and excretion pathways. PEA exerts most of its biological eff

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The age-related accumulation of bone marrow adipose tissue (BMAT) negatively impacts bone metabolism and hematopoiesis. This review provides an overview about BMAT-secreted factors as biomarkers for BMAT accumulation and osteoporosis risk.
RECENT FINDINGS: The adipokines leptin and adiponectin are regulators of BMAT. It remains to be clarified if locally produced adipokines substantially contribute to their peripheral serum levels and if they influence bone metabolism beyond that of extraosseous adipokine production. Existing data also suggests that BMAT disturbs bone metab

The amplitude of the depolarization-evoked Ca2+ transient is larger in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons from tumor-bearing mice compared with that of neurons from naive mice, and the change is mimicked by coculturing DRG neurons with the fibrosarcoma cells used to generate the tumors (Khasabova et al., 2007). The effect of palmitoylethanolamide (PEA), a ligand for the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα), was determined on the evoked-Ca2+ transient in the coculture condition. The level of PEA was reduced in DRG cells from tumor-bearing mice as well as those cocultured with fi

A nonmalignant near-diploid cell line m5s/1M, established by Sasaki and Kodama (J. Cell. Res., 131:114-122, 1987), was shown to respond to the epidermal growth factor (EGF). The m5s/1M cells showed high sensitivity to post-confluence inhibition of cell division and formed a uniform monolayer after the cells had become confluent. The addition of EGF resulted in loss of contact-dependent inhibition of growth and caused a massive piling up of a multilayered array of cells after they had become confluent. When EGF was removed from the medium, the cell number decreased rapidly, and the cells formed
