A cross-sectional study of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury: support for a specific distress-function relationship.

BACKGROUND: This study has investigated the specific relationship between childhood adversities, individual trauma symptoms and the functions of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). The aim was to examine whether different self-reported adverse experiences and trauma symptoms predict the need to engage in NSSI, either to regulate emotions or to communicate with and influence others. METHOD: The participants were a community sample of 816 adolescents aged 15-17 years with NSSI. Hierarchical multiple regression was used, controlling for NSSI frequency and gender. The dependent variables were the au

Policing the drunk driver: measuring law enforcement involvement in reducing alcohol-impaired driving.

INTRODUCTION: With many thousands of deaths still annually attributable to driving under the influence (DUI), it remains imperative that we … ervasive and persistent social marketing of such efforts to maximize the perception that arrest and punishment for DUI is always imminent, that penalties will be swift, certain, and severe. It is echoed that accurate data need to be collected at all levels of the DUI arrest and prosecution process in every jurisdiction within a state, so as to facilitate the …

Psychopathy: traditional and clinical antisocial concepts.

Advances in our knowledge about the concept of psychopathy and the repeated occurrence of antisocial behaviors in the face of adversity and punishment have been limited by a complex interplay of conceptual and methodological issues that have not yet been addressed adequately by psychosocial scientists. Foremost among the problems facing clinicians and researchers interested in this topic is the lack of agreement on the meaning and labelling of the construct. Scholars have not reached consensus in describing a category within a diagnostic system that distinguishes a relatively homogeneous group…

Analyzing the practice of medical humanistic care based on a social learning model: mapping the trajectory of the learning dynamic process from the learner's perspective.

BACKGROUND: Humanistic care is a good glue for the doctor-patient relationship, and it is a general trend to improve the practice of humanistic care. METHODS: A narrative research method was used to conduct semi-structured interviews with 18 master's degree nursing students from China who were in the clinical rotation stage, and the data were content analyzed and explored from the perspective of the learners who were learning about humanistic caring practices using the social learning theory model. RESULTS: There is a triple tension structure in the practice of humanistic care: At the cognit

Bypassing Striatal Learning Mechanisms Using Delayed Feedback to Circumvent Learning Deficits in Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVE: Feedback facilitates learning by guiding and modifying behaviors through an action-outcome contingency. As the majority of existing studies have focused on the immediate presentation of feedback, the impact of delayed feedback on learning is understudied. Prior work demonstrated that learning from immediate and delayed feedback employed distinct brain regions in healthy individuals, and compared to healthy individuals, individuals with traumatic brain injury (TBI) are impaired in learning from immediate feedback. The goal of the current investigation was to assess the effects of del

Influence of Rational use of Antibacterial Drugs on Drug Resistance of Pathogenic Bacteria in Nosocomial Infection.

The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of multi-departmental linkage and rational drug use supervision on the drug resistance of pathogenic bacteria in primary hospitals. Use the method of pharmacies and infection control departments to jointly develop hospital antimicrobial usage guidelines and reward and punishment systems to promote the rational use of antimicrobial drugs. In addition, clinicians and clinical pharmacists of the pharmacy department participated in the formulation of anti-infection programs, infection control departments and pharmacy supervision, and compared the …

Incidence of induced abortion in Malawi, 2015.

BACKGROUND: In Malawi, abortion is legal only if performed to save a woman's life; other attempts to procure an abortion are punishable by 7-14 years imprisonment. Most induced abortions in Malawi are performed under unsafe conditions, contributing to Malawi's high maternal mortality ratio. Malawians are currently debating whether to provide additional exceptions under which an abortion may be legally obtained. An estimated 67,300 induced abortions occurred in Malawi in 2009 (equivalent to 23 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15-44), but changes since 2009, including dramatic increases in contrac

The neurobiology and control of anxious states.

Fear is an adaptive component of the acute "stress" response to potentially-dangerous (external and internal) stimuli which threaten to pert … rapeutic pertinence. For example, in the Vogel Conflict Test (VCT), the ability of drugs to release punishment-suppressed drinking behavior is evaluated. In reviewing the neurobiology of anxious states, the present article focuses in particular upon: the multifarious and complex roles of individual modulators, often as a function of the specific receptor typ …

Striatal firing rate reflects head movement velocity.

Although the basal ganglia have long been implicated in the initiation of actions, their contribution to movement remains a matter of dispute. Using wireless multi-electrode recording and motion tracking, we examined the relationship between single-unit activity in the sensorimotor striatum and movement kinematics. We recorded single-unit activity from medium spiny projection neurons and fast-spiking interneurons while monitoring the movements of mice using motion tracking. In Experiment 1, we trained mice to generate movements reliably by water-depriving them and giving them periodic cued suc

Diversity in pathways to common childhood disruptive behavior disorders.

Oppositional-Defiant Disorder (ODD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are highly comorbid, a phenomenon thought to be due to shared etiological factors and mechanisms. Little work has attempted to chart multiple-level-of-analysis pathways (i.e., simultaneously including biological, environmental, and trait influences) to ODD and ADHD, the goal of the present investigation. 559 children/adolescents (325 boys) between the ages of 6 and 18 participated in a multi-stage, comprehensive diagnostic procedure. 148 were classified as ODD; 309 were classified as ADHD, based on parent,

Strict and inconsistent discipline in childhood: consequences for adolescent mental health.

Recent reviews have suggested an association between discipline experienced in childhood and the development of later psychopathology. As part of a longitudinal study of the health and development of a large sample of New Zealand children, maternal reports of strict and inconsistent discipline were obtained when the sample members were aged 7 and 9 years. It was found that inconsistency was associated with early behaviour problems, but strictness was not. At age 15 years the prevalence of DSM-III disorders in the sample was established. Univariate analyses showed significant associations betwe

Deprivation in the childhood of depressed women.

With recent developments in community psychiatric services, concern with prevention has become an urgent social, as well as medical challenge. Comprehensive investigation into causation must therefore be given systematic emphasis. This paper is an effort toward clarification of etiology, specifically of the depressive disorder, in terms of early childhood experiences. The work is based on social and psychiatric history data collected by experienced psychiatric social workers on two groups of subjects from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Collaborative Depression Studies under the
